Title: Nailbomb at bridge - what pickup at neck position?
Post by: Bensen on November 18, 2009, 04:42:10 PM
Hey there,

I'm going to order my first Bareknuckle PUs very soon (yeah!) but have some questions left.

My guitar is a Mayones Setius GTM Lizard, which is a very nice powerstrat-style guitar with mahogany body and amazakoe top. I run it through an Orange Rockerverb 50 Head.

Now the important part: The music I wanna play and the tones I wanna get  :P

I play different styles but mostly heavier Psychedelic Rock, Stoner Rock, Doom Metal, Heavy Metal but also many Hard Rock pieces..

What I wanna get is a fresh, heavy, but not muddy sound and I think the Nailbomb can deliver this at the bridge position. I also thought about the Warpig but I'd guess only the Nailbomb can give me the real heavy sound I need sometimes.

Now I need to get this guitar versatile in the neck position:

I'm looking for some nice fat, creamy and psychedelic lead sounds with great sustain, but it should be able to produce some great clean tones as well (I don't need too much treble though).

I hope you get what I mean and am looking forward to your suggestions and answers. Thanks very much, guys!

Ben

Without too much knowledge om the subject I would say a Crawler neck would suit your needs. I have never played one, but in a mahogany bodied guitar it should sound quite fat and warm.

A lot of people seem to pair the Nailbomb with a cold sweat which is more trebly than the Crawler.

I'm sure someone with more knowledge will give some more insightfull comments.

Methinks a Nailbomb would work at the neck also.

calibrated set of Nailbombs, I also like the sound of my VHII neck p/u in a mahogany/maple guitar.

Thanks guys!

I don't know about another Nailbomb at the neck...

I really need some brilliant, smooth cleans and it should be able to play some blues stuff as well, so I think a Nailbomb at the neck would just be a little bit too much output.

I can hardly imagine that a pickup THIS hot can still produce creamy, mellow tones as well or am I wrong?

Crawler and VHII could be both greaaat. Ahhh I can't decide!  :?

I have a nailbomb set in an alder superstrat, very good clean and blues tones and awesome metal tones.

The Nailbomb neck p/u is not the same as the bridge, ask Tim he will steer you straight.

Tim informed me that a Nailbomb neck PU is rated 9.7 for output.  Where the bridge Nailbomb is 15.9.  Hope this helps.

i think that my neck nailbomb is milder than you said... 8.2k, if i remember well. maybe that are the new specs, i don't know. anyway neck NB is not exactly "creamy", being very clear and bright.

how does the guitar sound and what pickups does it have?
is it bolt on? maple neck? what does the amazakoe top add to the mahogany body tone?

The Neck is different to the bridge with the Nailbombs.
I had the same conversation with Tim. I said i wanted something versatile that could clean up in the neck and he said to just stick with the nailbomb neck.

You're spoilt for choice with neck models to go with a Nailbomb bridge (as others have pointed out, the neck pickups are totally different specs to their bridge equivalents, something the product page doesn't make entirely clear):  Nailbomb, Cold Sweat or VHII necks could all do what you want.

If it helps, have a listen to my neck shootout clips: clean (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11927.0) & lead (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12572.0)

Wow, thanks for all your great feedback!

how does the guitar sound and what pickups does it have?
is it bolt on? maple neck? what does the amazakoe top add to the mahogany body tone?

At the moment it has some DiMarzio PUs and it doesn't sound bad at all, but a little bit "lifeless". I just want some more action going on - fatter distortion in bridge. Nice singing lead sounds with the neck PU etc (read above  :P).

Yep it's a bolt-on construction but the neck is mostly mahogany with two maple stripes in it.

Hey guys,

I wrote an e-mail to Tim and now there is the different choice between Nailbomb Set or Nailbomb Bridge and Cold Sweat neck..

Any tips how to decide? I guess they've got a somewhat similar sound but maybe the Nailbomb sounds a little bit too bright and cold like dheim mentioned?!

He didn't actually say that, he said "being very clear and bright".  The word "cold" to my mind implies "sterile" & the NB neck certainly isn't that :) but anyway, of the NB & CS neck pickups, I'd choose CS to get what you want...
