Title: NVD
Post by: MrBump on November 28, 2009, 08:27:38 PM
No, not New Venereal Disease (for those of us that remember the days before STDs...)

The wife has, once again, broken our vacuum cleaner.

We've been married over 10 years now, and have owned at least 5 vacuum cleaners.  We've owned Dyson, VAX, Hoover, Philips.  And my beloved has broken all of them, physically snapping bits of them or rendering them useless by vacuuming up, for example, fresh cat sick.

(before any of the more sexually enlightened of you point out that I should get off my hairy fat @rse and vac up myself, my wife works three days a week and so does most of the housework on Mondays and Fridays.  OK?!?!)

So, I'm in the market for a new vacuum cleaner.  Any recommendations?

Mark.

I thought Dyson would've been the best. Seeing as the only mistakes is your beloved hoovering everything that could be found on the ground.

One of the most expensive, to be sure - but the best?  I'm less sure about that...

I've got a Dyson Animal. It's great. Not compared it to any other vacuums though.

Get a Miele or a Sebo
Miele for cylinder cleaners
Sebo for upright designs
Both good German designed cleaners that work great
I have used a Miele for years and it just works great
They are pricey but they last and work so well

not sure on dyson. I'm no vacuum cleaner afficionado, but our first one broke (with alarming burning smells), and while the new one works, it's pretty heavy and unwieldy.

+1  for Miele as well.  Used to have a Bosch and thought it was great.  Was to be able to hoover the cat as well.  Got the Miele and it is so powerful. Tried the cat but had to stop otherwise it would have disappeared into the bag.  The most powerfull vac I have ever owned.

Andy

P.S. it does have a power knob so it can be tamed.

+1 on Henry

Mrs uses one at work (she's a cleaner) and they last years. When you consider she uses it every week night and has been for about the last 3 years, accidentally sucking up all sorts into the tube and it still survives. We now own one at home having been let down by Dyson etc, the Henry works a treat. However, I would advise your lady against sucking up anything wet (Cat sick etc) unless the product specifically advertises that it will do both wet and dry vacuuming.

The only thing that really wears out on a Henry are the hoses and sometimes the plastic parts of the fittings, but then that is down to general wear and tear. Considering how extensively she uses it, the hose and part of the lance assembly have only broken once each and the parts are pennies to replace as opposed to Dyson prices which can amount to a fair few bob.

I'd avoid Dysons -everyone we have ever had has failed fairly soon. My brother, years ago, worked for a parcel company who had the Dyson contract. He said that broken ones were forever being returned to the factory. We have a Henry and it works fine and has great tone.

Best one I've ever used is Vorwerk - google it - but I lost it to the other team when my first marriage disintegrated. A stunning machine, unbelievable cleaning power, made even a male want to use it...

I've used Dyson since. Not as good, but comparable. Never had one break down, but the bits and bobs do tend to wear out (had my current one for 9 years, some of the fittings fell apart recently, but were easily replaced - and apparently not that expensive... I say "apparently" because I wasn't aware we were replacing them after "my wife" wore them out )

Henry's are nigh on immortal.

My cousins own a pet shop chain, they have Henry hoovers in every shop and they get used to hoover up all sorts, dirty sawdust out cages etc, and they still take years to break.

Henry's are pretty damn good hoovers - have used them often and liked them and they aren't too expensive.
The Miele has better suction I think and is quieter in use in my experience.

I have 3 Vacuum cleaners - an electroluxe that is the main shop vac, a Trend special workshop vac that in some ways isn't even as good as the Electroluxe and the Miele which I rate the most.

The Electrluxe has been a real trooper and is in use most days in the shop
The Trend lurks under a bench and I keep promising to use it more
The Miele is the one that comes out once a week to really make the place clean though as it does the best job - mine has a turbo brush attachment that makes it work like an upright cleaner

The only downside with the Miele for workshop use is that the dust bags are a little small - although they are excellant to use.
My girlfriend alo has the same Miele  and loves it as she has a long haired Persian cat that is constantly shedding fur (it seems to shed enough fur that you could harvest it, spin it into a yarn & knit a jumper from it every week)

I would say Nilfisk (if you can get it in the UK), Miele or an Electrolux. I got an Electrolux now and it seems pretty good, but I got no real knowledge in the vacuum cleaner department.

So, just for the sake of "closure" as our American cousins say, today I went out and bought a Henry.

Half the price of a cheap Dyson, and build like a tank - great design too, no fiddly bits for my wife to break off.

Had a quick play on it, and it sucks like a demon!  Cracking purchase, I think!!!
