Title: Spaeker handling question
Post by: agentOrAnGe on December 01, 2009, 04:45:33 PM
If I have a speaker cabinet that has a handling of 80w and i buy a 100w head w/ a half power switch, would it hurt my speaker if i only ran the amp in half power and was careful not to run it at full?  PDT_030

You should be OK doing this, assuming that the power output of the amp and speaker are accurate.

I assume that the amp is valve?

It shouldn't blow if you don't push it.

i never found a pentode/triode switch that satisfied me (if thats what it is). i'd rather look for a nice high power speaker. heres some ideas i have personal experience of:

g12h100
sidewinder
electrovoice ev12l

i'm sure theres more out there!

edit: the electrovoice model number

I was thinking about replacing the speaker. It makes sense to ( relatively cheap and easy way to adjust tone), but i do not know which speaker. I have thought about the EV12 or maybe a Eminence. I do not really like Celestions.

I started use EV12L speakers several months back - I like them alot, the main disadvantages are weight and cost. great sounding high powered speaker

Its the normal 200w version. I have them fitted in to two Mesa Boogie Thiele cabinets. When I first plugged my amp in, I was really blown away by the sound. At first I thought it was just a honeymoon period, but I'm sticking with these forever. The sound is big and bold, not at all Celestion-y, and there is no speaker breakup.

My amp is a Marshall JMP 50w master volume.

As Shaman says, the Eminence Delta Pro 12A is a EVM12L copy, though I never tried one so can't say - they are half the price and a bit less heavy though, so you should look into them if you're interested in that sound.
