Title: Removing the shine
Post by: tomjackson on December 04, 2009, 09:33:45 PM: Thinking about getting some wire wool on my Tele neck and taking some of the gloss off it. It's a Nitro finished Allparts neck and it feels pretty good but I do like the less glossy Nocaster necks. It's doesnt have to look aged or anything but I'm just pondering whether a gentle rub with some Liberon 0000 or 000 would improve the feel without looking rubbish.

Any thoughts?

I remember a guy in Guitarist (Neville Martin I think) used wire wool on the body and neck of a new ES335, would anybody go that far?

I had the wire wool ready, but was scared, and someone somewhere suggested the scourer... so I did it... and nothing horrid happened...

Post by: Elliot on December 08, 2009, 08:41:08 AM: I use 3M Sandblaster Fine 180 sanding pads (the ones you get from B&Q) - they work nicely on polyester finish necks.

That is how I do it on nitro-finished necks as well. Plus no stray steel to get stuck to pickups.

Go slow, you can always take off more later.
