I'm thinking about buying a neck from warmoth. It's from their show case selection and it's gonna cost about $145 which includes, nut, frets and no finish (I'll tung oil it). How much should I expect to pay in shipping and customs charges?
I wondering whether to get the neck I have now, modified to how I want or whether it would be cheaper to buy a new neck from warmoth.
-
Delivery isn't too much, about $20? Customs charges will be about 20ish percent, give or take, on top of the neck PLUS delivery.
-
Looks like it will work out cheaper for me to buy a new neck. Which is a shame, but I can't stand the vintage radius on my Strat any more

ask wez about reworking your existing neck
-
I did, I was going to go through with it, but although Wez's price was great, it's still cheaper for me to buy a new neck from Warmoth. Already put my order through too

hope it works out with the warmoth!

I've had a warmoth neck before, sold it to a member on here actually. Very nice work so I'm sure everything will work otu.

Not my experience, but maybe I get a discount with Wez because I'm so $%&#ing awesome :-p I've had a neck off Warmoth and a neck of USACG and didn't get charged anything other than shipping on either

Lucky man! I've had to pay VAT/import duty on everything I've ordered from Warmoth.
-
I'm told it's completely down to luck and if they happen to check your item in a spot-check whilst it's in the warehouse. You must have shitety luck
-
That surprises me. I've had a few items sneak through the ordinary post without charges, but I thought UPS applied Customs charges as a matter of course.
Or maybe the inspectors know my name! I've bought a ton of stuff from abroad over the years!
But yes, I do generally have shitety luck, now I think about it. :(

My neck was $135 plus shipping , parcelforce tried to deliver it yesterday and I have a letter:-
£13.76 VAT
£8.00 Parelforce clearance fee
Total £21.76
So I guess UK cost was about £125 with delivery
Mine is also unfinished. should get it tomorrow so I'll let you know how it is.

That's a bit cheaper than mine. I went for a CBS Warmoth Pro neck. How long did it take from when you ordered it, till delivery?

and no, i dont do necks that cheap!! but when you start adding a few custom options onto the warmoth stuff it adds up fast and people like me start to look a better deal (hence leading lew to believe in his own awesomeness and its influence on my pricing ;) )..... for standard stuff i would still rather buy in allparts or warmoth stuff myself, especially for the speed increase since i am often a slow bugger
reworking existing necks is a good way to go but generally involves a refret, re-radius and new nut which isnt too bad, again it starts going up when it needs re-profiling and a refinish so its not always as cheap as buying something that works in the first place. i dont offer fender style truss rod stuff so for authenticities sake its still sometimes better to get a fender style neck in and mod it to preference if thats what is needed for a particular project

Assuming parcelforce deliver it tomorrow as planned then it probably took about 3 weeks, which is not too bad considering it was not fretted when I chose it.
It did cost a little more than anticipated but then again I think £125 is very good for a neck that will be of very good quality.

I find it normally takes about 8-10 days, but I always go for UPS Express rather than USPS/Parcelforce.
Last neck I ordered took just over 2 weeks, and that included a paint job (having said that, the satin nitro finish is so thin I'm not 100% sure it's there at all! )

I think that's what I paid for. Plus it's not getting painted, so with any luck I'll get it before Xmas.

That is true, unfortunatelly... changing fretboard radius or the position of dots (like on the '50s instead of the ususal '60s position on the W Pro neck) and thinks like this, sucks a lot...
Also they won't try in any way putting a maple fretboard on wenge or rosewood neck, not even if it's the stabilized maple
-
True, they won't do everything, even at a price.
I have noticed one new feature, just in the last week or so - you can now buy an unfinished showcase body and choose a finish for it! :D

You could always do custom orders that way, I didn't know you could get an existing showcase item painted - I hate phones, only use them as a last resort!
-
Okay, mine came this morning. It's a quality neck. The finish is so smooth it feels like it's already got a satin coat on it even though it is unfinished.
The Boat contour is really nice, not as chunky as I thought it would be, but then again they never do feel as chunky until they are strung up. Unfortunately as I bought mine for Chrismas my missus is insisting it gets wrapped up until Christmas day!
One thing I noticed was that it says 'oil finishes not satisfactory' on the back of the neck, which is not ideal as I'm doing a Tru-oil finish....

It's only in terms of the warranty - they're not responsible if it warps, unless you put a hard finish on it. That said, I think I read somewhere on the Unofficial Warmoth forum that they would regard Tru-Oil as a "finish" rather than an "oil", because of the way it hardens.
"All our necks are dipped in an oil based penetrating sealer which is compatible with virtually all secondary finishes. This provides enhanced stability; however, it is not adequate protection for playing. We strongly recommend you apply a hard finish to all Maple, Mahogany, and Koa necks. Oils do not validate our warranty requirements. We understand the attraction of raw or lightly oiled necks. They feel fast and are not sticky. Unfortunately, they are much more susceptible to moisture related warping and twisting. Our experience is that hard finished necks seldom warp. Less than 1 out of 200 (0.5%) are returned for warpage. Raw or oiled necks don't fare as well. About 10% are rendered useless from the torture. The more acidic your perspiration, the higher the odds are against you.
If you must play a raw neck, that's cool; it's ok. A neck is just a tool. Just be aware of the risk. If yours does the pretzel act, we don't want to hear about it.
For a valid warranty, a hard finish must be sufficiently thick to completely cover the wood. That means no wood is exposed and you are actually playing on the finish, not the wood. Now, it does not matter to us who applies the finish. Of course we would like to do the finish for you, but if you choose to do it yourself or have it done elsewhere the warranty is still valid."

Ah great, that explains a lot. And the sealer oil they apply explains why it already feels slightly finished.
I wander if the contour affects the warpage, I would imagine the boat is a little more solid than a thinner contour?
Either way happy now to proceed with the Tru-oil finish!

I've bought two satin-finished necks from them recently, one has a vintage tint and one's clear - they feel exactly the same as unfinished necks! So I suspect they only use a couple of coats and they must regard their own finishes as adequate. I'm sure you'll be fine with the Tru-Oil.
I think you're right about the thicker neck shapes being less prone to problems, but I guess even a big neck can twist.

I never bought a unfinished body, but I always guessed that it could be solved online or via email...

Well my neck is now in the country. It's waiting for more clearence till it gets delievered. So I'll probably get a letter tomorrow asking me to pay duty on it. Oh well, least I'll get it before Christmas :P
Got some Tru Oil and Steel wool on the way too.

If its UPS they usually just turn up and ask for a cheque (or cash, I suppose). But the first couple of times I ordered they phoned me and I paid by credit card.
-
Yeah it's UPS. I'm going to be at work over the next 3 days so I'm hoping some one like my Mum or Brother will be in to pay it for me. My little sister wouldn't know what the hell to do, she hasn't got a good grasp of common sense just yet
-
I get mine delivered to work - it's always the same UPS bloke and he says he plays guitar himself but he can't afford to buy much gear because he's got a family.
It's getting to the point where I feel quite embarrassed every time a neck or body turns up, I even justify myself by saying "well they had this 20% off sale". Self-consciousness is a ridiculous thing!
-
Turned out it wasn't in the country at that point
But it is now and it's out for delievery. It's coming from the Luton UPS branch, which is about a 40 minute drive when the roads are clear, god knows how long he'll take in the snow.
I didn't go into work today, no way am I driving considering how slippery it is (had enough trouble last night getting stuck on a slight hill). So I'm glad I'll be here when it arrives.
-
Luton isn't wonderful at the moment. just out of curiosity, where are you Steve? Hatfield way?

Yes mate, my uncles girlfriend lives in Luton and I've heard it's pretty bad compared to Hatfield.
Got my Tru-Oil through but just waiting for my steel wool. Can't find any where near by that sells the grade I need.
-
Bloody package delievery has been rescheduled do to the ice. Though I've seen UPS trucks driving around :?
-
:(
-
Hope you get it soon... Charge the battery of your camera :P

So my neck finally came today. Looks great and feels great.
Now the problem, it doesn't fit in the neck pocket.
The neck pocket is slightly bigger than the neck, so there's a gap, not even a millimetre big but the neck is moving around far too much.
Now I could just give it to a pro to get it sorted for me, but is there anything I could do myself?
-
how is it when bolted on?
-
Here's some pictures so you get an idea

Well, the neck is on. I've oiled it up and it feels pretty good. The oil has brought out the slight flame to the neck too.
Got some tuners on, new strings and gave it a good set up as best I can. Plays really well now. The most comfortable Strat I've played (Eric Johnson sig is an exception). I'm quite proud of what I've done.
Bought a new Strat today too. A mexican Standard, the quality on these things have improved 10 fold. So I'll post pictures up soon.
-
on a side note... does anyone know what warmoth back contour would come close to what fender considers a 'modern C shape' neck??
I want a neck similar to my american deluxe tele for my mex strat, the two necks just dont compare and i reconthe guitar is in need of a complete rework.
-
I've got the Standard thin contour on my Warmoth neck. But compared to my Mexi strat, it's a little slimmer.
So If you want something similar in feel to the mexi tele, then the Boat contour is close.
-
Gotta disagree, I think the Warmoth Standard Thin is the nearest to the Fender Modern C.
All the other Warmoth shapes are quite different - the Boat, Fatback and '59 are bigger than the Modern C, the Clapton and SRV are similar to their Fender equivalents, the Wizard is like an Ibanez and the Wolfgang is, I suppose, similar to a Peavey Wolfgang (or Music Man EVH/Axis).
If you think the Standard Thin might be a bit too skinny, I'd suggest the '59 Roundback. It's chunky around the 12th fret but not too deep at the nut.
-
Ok another problem. The High E string chokes at the 16th fret when I bend higher than a tone.
This is the exact reason why I bought a new neck but this still happens. All the other frets and strings are fine except that fret with that string.
I've given the neck some relief and I'm still getting problems.
