Hi guys, first post. Which bareknuckle should I get for the bridge of my Jackson RR24? It is alder, with pale neck and FB, and has a FR. I love extremley tight lows, crunchy but articulate mids, and smooth but cutting highs. My amp is a Mesa Mark III. I play prog metal, thrash, death, jazz and other things. I would like a bit of versitality. Mostly for rhythms. Thanks :)
Also, I was thinking the painkiller would be great, but idk how it would be in alder.

AV Warpigs sound like they'll do the trick.

Wow! I just found a Holy diver for $97! You think I should get it as opposed to the painkiller or warpig? Keep in mind, tightness is extremley important to me, and I like as much as possible.

Holy Divers are supposed to be something wonderful in alder, but if you need extreme tightness you might want to look around for a ceramic that won't get too bright. You should shoot Tim an email (he'll definitely know what you want), and/or wait for the more experienced users to confuse you with their various opinions.
In terms of the Holy Diver, I have one and I think it's great. It's extremely versatile, and thick with not-too-high highs, good lows, and great mids, but definitely not the tightest that Bare Knuckle has to offer.

I emailed tim, he reccomended the painkiller. But i'm thinking it would be too bright in alder/maple. If I get it, i will pay $150. And my amp is arleady tight. So idk.

From what I've heard, it won't be too bright in alder/maple. I maintain that the Holy Diver is certainly one hell of a pickup, but if you want the BR00TALZ, and you play downtuned (I'm not sure if you do), then you'll be better off with the painkiller. But if you're unsure, I'm sure the man won't mind if you say so.

I have a Painkiller in a Jackson KV2. It is bright (but not excessively so) & very tight. Clip here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=11926.0). KV2+PK=great metal guitar
However, I also have the Holy Diver in a Jackson RR1T (& several other guitars :)) - it sounds absolutely wonderful in guitars with alder bodies or maple neck-thru/alder body wings. It can do pretty much any flavour of metal though like syr2012 says, it not the best in the BKP range for extreme down-tuned technical death metal. It can handle a certain amount of downtuning though. Clips here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=6460.0), here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=9744.0), here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=6461.0), here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=14365.0) & here (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=12997.0) :)
If you want the most versatility (the RR24 has no neck pickup?), then HD might be the way to go. It would certainly be my first choice & sounds you have the opportunity to get one at a good price...

i have a painkiller in an rr24.. it is bright, no question - went to a 350k pot and it works well now - crushing tightness and attack. holy diver might be a better option in retrospect due to the sweeter high end.

Oh hai, Spirit Crusher.
I used a Painkiller in an Alder/Maple/Ebony combo ESP and it became hands down my favorite pickup ever.

Well, im mostly playing in standard. I don't really play brootz, I play more along the lines of death and cynic. I also play some thrash and jazz. I thinki i will get the holy diver.

In that case, you might want something a bit more organic. I don't know enough about the painkiller to be sure, but it might be a bit much if you like those calm tunes. Go for the holydiver (pics or it didn't happen), especially if you like cleans. I haven't heard much good about the bridge PK's cleans.

Damn, the holy diver is gone!

How would the miracle man be for me? It's descriptions sound like the HD, only more toght and crunchy, which I love.

They're completely different. Completely.
MM is ceramic, HD is alnico. MM has a big and tight bottom and a sharp top, with slightly subdues mids. HD has a warmer top, less lows and a hefty, pronounced midrange.

You're lucky, I haven't heard about them at all

I was just referring to a wall post by dheim I saw a while back where he said that they weren't too... clean.
-
I'd say the PK bridge is useable on the clean channel. It's certainly nicer than the MM, but clean tones aren't really it's forte. It's quite a punchy "hard" clean tone - you can certainly tell it's a ceramic magnet in there :)
The CS has by far the nicest clean sound of the stock ceramic BKP bridge models, though the old-spec HD is very nice too. Can't comment on CWP or C'bomb because I have neither...
-
& FWIW, I think a Miracle Man would not be a good match for an RR24. You need a much fuller upper-midrange in that combination of woods. I'd be looking at HD, PK, NB or WP for that guitar.

Thought I'd stop in and muddy the waters a bit.....I purchased an alnico HD a few months back for a 100% maple guitar. Amazing sound, but it was lacking a bit of the tightness I wanted. Mine came in wound a little cooler than the listed spec (was wound to around 15.1K if I recall). I took a chance (and voided my warranty in the process) and installed a ceramic magnet I had kicking around. WA-F@$KING-HOOOOOOO!!!! Now THAT'S tight baby! Nice and even grinding mids. Absolutely singing highs (no ice picks here). And despite being a ceramic pup, it remains incredibly warm, and cleans up nicely! Wired it for series or parallel and I can now go from vicious to vintage (cleans up incredibly well when played in parallel).

Nice. I'd love to A/B that pickup next to the original/old-spec HD (which is around 13.2k IIRC) - I have it in two guitars & love it nearly as much as I love the alnico HD.
I wonder if Tim recently re-specced the HD & didnt' update the product page? The first HD I bought was 16.4k, but one of the recent ones was 15.1 as well. As far as I can tell (given that they are in totally different guitars), they sound pretty much the same - both of them are the HD I know & love. Perhaps Tim found a different/better way to get to the same end result?
-
I thought Tim once said that the old ceramic HD was what eventually became the Cold Sweat (difference being the CS is wound with 43 gauge wire and the HD with 44).

They are certainly NOT the same pickup - the old spec HD is sort of a halfway house between new HD & CS. Has more mids than CS, a lot of the midrange thickness of the HD, but a little brighter with some ceramic "tightness". Not sure if changing from 44 to 43 would do that....
-
I'm thinking the gauge of wire makes a BIG difference in tone (almost as big as the magnet). In terms of DC ratings and magnets, the HD and NB were almost identical, their biggest difference being the gauge of wire they're wound with (44 vs 43). Dunno what other pups Tim winds with 44 gauge, but he told me that the NB, CS, RY, and Crawlers were all wound with 43 gauge and that was what contributed to their more organic tone......
