playing guitar with Rhianna? :o :o
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=19ZHbbOIFN4
-
Think I'm gonna book some tickets for may :P
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PHQojUD3x40
-
Well, it's a pay check I s'pose.... Not really much need for a player of his ability on that music. :?
-
Perhaps in as much as the audience are going to watch Rhianna not Nuno and 90% wouldn't know the difference between a standard player and Nuno. But I wouldn't let the deceptively minimal production make you think it takes anything less than loads of ability and hours to achieve 8)
I'm interested in it because I've been working on a similar styled ep that's coming out in the new year and I think it's a style that hasn't really been exploited (with modern production). I liked Greg Howe with Jackson and all the over produced cheese from the 80s with Landau and Luke soloing too though :D
It's either a good or really bad sign for the future of the session guitarist!
-
I was a bit confused (as were my friends when i started shouting 'Its Nuno!!' at the sight of his N4 and black finger nails. Maybe its satisfying for him, maybe it just pays well!
At least someone else is talking about it-the wife keeps on telling me im boring when i mention it.
-
He must be so bored
-
He must be so bored
Maybe he likes the song?
-
I was watching last night but fell asleep during Rihanna's interview. So this is a bit of a surprise!
-
I was too busy admiring the dress....
-
Was interesting viewing, I noticed him, it was where my attention was devoted to, though!
-

She's stupendously good looking isn't she?
-
interesting, i'll take a look later at the show. :D thanks for the heads-up.

The week she was on X Factor, I was a lot more impressed by Alicia Keys - talent AND looks-wise.
-
Tickets are a bit steep for the gigs though = 40 quid!
-
i think the extreme tickets were cheaper than that.
-
I recognised the guitar - I even pointed it out to the missus... but I didn't realise it was actually him playing it!!
I'd never heard of her. Didn't reckon much to her voice, but the shoulder pads were impressive...
We only watched the program because of Hugh Grant - and if I hadn't been flicking channels at the wrong moment just before we went to bed, I might have escaped altogether!
-
I'd never heard of her.
WHAT???!!! You've never heard "Umbrella - ella - ella"? Or just didn't realise who it was?
-
I'd never heard of her.
WHAT???!!! You've never heard "Umbrella - ella - ella"? Or just didn't realise who it was?
That is sorta strange....even if you don't listen to pop whatsoever there is no way you could've not heard about acts like Rihanna or Lady Gaga by now :?:
-
 I've heard of Lady Gaga - I've even seen film of her performing... not entirely sure whether she's a serious artiste or not though - seems a bit too p1ssed to get too far (unless it's an act?), and her career seems to be more about appearing in the newspapers than music.
Wouldn't recognise her if you played me a recording - not a hope in hell...
Umbrella what?
On the radio I listen to BBC Radio 4 and nothing else. On the TV, I might watch Later with Jools, but I usually sleep through it. That's about it.
It's been like that for at least 15 years... how am I gonna know what these modern folks is like?
You'd actually be horrifed about some of the "huge acts" I know nothing about and have no urge to find out about...
Eg, Extreme, themselves, other than the name, and I think one hit with lots of vocals on, are a bit of an unknown quantity to me. They seemed a promising outfit following the path of Queen, and then nothing happened... not surprising I didn't recognise Nuno the other night! I kind of viewed them (and still do) as "young upstarts" like Guns and Roses and the like - I tried to get excited but none of them were really my thing (eg I have "Appetite" but have never found it remotely listenable unlike many of my peers - they seemed to be bad copies of a bunch of other stuff, I found myself wanting to listen to the other stuff instead...)
Bear in mind I'm talking about Extreme and GnR here - anything after that is probably unknown to me! I felt a little burst of interest during BritPop, I have Pulp's Different Class (superb), and all of Oasis's early albums (not sure why anymore), some other stuff I can't remember now - but then the music industry subsided again into plastic generated stuff like this girl the other night, and regurgitated rock stuff... I kinda lost interest again and went back to researching what I missed in the 60s and 70s...
I have to admit that even my wife gets surprised by me not knowing a recent "hit" - but how am I going to know it if I haven't heard it?
-
I kind of viewed them (and still do) as "young upstarts" like Guns and Roses and the like

Those "young upstarts" are the same age as you! At least, they're exactly the same age as me, and I don't think you're very much older.
You really did take yourself out of the loop early Andy!
-
Yep... that's about it
Hope no-one's getting me wrong here - I am kinda dismissing a load of stuff for my own personal listening, but there's no way I'd want to dismiss it for anyone else. This girl the other night obviously makes records that people want to buy, and that's good... but she left me a bit cold myself, so I doubt I'll even remember her name in a few weeks.
And then on the regurgitators: I love those that regurgitate music/vibes that I like, that touches me, eg The Black Crowes, Ocean Colour Scene, arch regurgitators both... and I have all of their output. But other stuff like Coldplay and, er, can't think of any other names - just name any act of the last x years - they're regurgitating stuff that doesn't grab me... it's all good, but I haven't got the time, money, or inclination to chase it.
I have, in fact, done what my Dad always said I would: "grown up" (yuk!!). The only difference is that where he stopped listening to Buddy Holly, Elvis, etc, I've carried on listening to what I liked, and I still spend money on music, and I still have my hair! (and it's now somewhat longer than James May's!).

That's interesting, because when I hear new(er) bands who I think are just doing something I've heard before, I tend to dismiss them and stick to the originals. That said, I'd acknowledge the two you mentioned, the Black Crowes and Ocean Colour Scene, are both good bands, though neither are quite my cup of tea.

Yeah, me too (not the hair bit). I still like my old stuff and I find new stuff increasingly hard to get into. But it's not so much the music (though the "heard it all before" syndrome applies). It's more that I find the way they dress and act increasingly ridiculous - they take themselves so seriously and actually believe that wearing black, letting your hair hang in your eyes and scowling makes you look enigmatic and moody.
Yes, I know we were the same at that age! . But music's supposed to be a laugh innit?
-
As well as having Nuno playing live the album has a track featuring Slash.
I remember in my early teens I'd spend whole weekends going through my dads immense record collection totally unaware of what I was listening to and hearing sounds for the first time - it sounds corny as hell but it was magic. Problem is, the more discerning and selective you become about genres you listen to you can pigeon hole yourself and not realize you're missing out on some great music.
Anyway...Rihannas new album has stupidly good production and song arrangement. The lyrics pass me by though.

F**K me... Is he going bankrupt?
The price they are asking for his surplus (historic) guitars is highway robbery!
I think Nuno owes some major back taxes... :?
-
I don't really see the problem.. I'd play on stage with Rihanna if I got the chance!

i think lady gaga writes music for other popstars, and i think she writes her own stuff, too. the image thing is just that, if anything she's the most musical of the current crop of popstars, as far as i can tell.
rihanna is fairly good too.
pop music is actually as good as i can ever remember it being. it's king compared to the late 90s, anyway, when it was all dance guff like the darn vengaboys.

Ye but Lady Gaga's music is $%&#ing dire

Same here, didn't to start with but its definitely grown on me!
edit - this one's my favourite, always ends up getting stuck in my head. Not an electronic "dance pop" one either, it has real guitar in it :o

And I thought you were a young spritely thing MDV, with at least half a finger on the pulse of modern beat music?!!
Watch out - you need to pay more attention to the mush... sorry, music... or you'll end up an old cynical thing like me who only likes the stuff he likes

Good man :D
-
Yep, too late for me
I havent had a clue what was 'popular' since I was about 14. I prefer to decide what I like based on what I hear rather than how many other people like it, and there are a million and one other ways to find music. Call me crazy (some do: you should see some of the looks I get from some people my age (mid-ish 20s - I'm 27) when they find out I have no clue whatsoever who any million-selling chart-topping person is....and then they have no clue who origin, meshuggah, rodrigo y gabrialla, isis, arch enemy, wes montgomery, clutch, lenny breau, nile and a slew of other people I listen to on a daily basis are )
-
Same here, didn't to start with but its definitely grown on me!
yeah, same here.
i mean, i still like what i like, and i'm not going to buy any lady gaga stuff, but for pop music it's pretty darn brilliant, compared to the aforementioned dross like the vengaboys which was around when i was a teenager. way i see it is, i can keep an eye on popular culture and still like what i like. And i have to have heard the stuff to decide i don't like it, plus there's the (admittedly very slim) chance it might be good.
-
I'll give it another go
-
Rihanna first, yes she's a good singer, yes she's gorgeous, but here we go again another highly manufactured and forgettable song. What the f*ck is somebody like Nuno with his track record doing on something like this! Lady Gaga, When she burst onto the scene I could see she had something, but she's rapidly disappearing down music factory highway (90% sex, 10% content). Gimme something real for F's sake.

Uh?
-
^ Actually, ("Seriously, maybe he likes it"), I was wondering that as well.
I find it hard to imagine playing on something I didn't like. And although I wouldn't go out and buy this, it's pleasant enough... and yeah, I could probably enjoy playing it with a bunch of musicians...
When it comes down to it, when you strip off the "image" and "street cred" stuff, and the "ego trip" stuff (ie do I get a solo? or wotever ) music's music... it's all pretty great to play. I've played in and fronted three bands of varying degrees of "rock-ness", and I was also bassist in a church worship band for years, which was basically AOR, ballads and some ethinic stuff. I enjoyed it all, and I enjoyed it most when the musicians were all roughly the same level and we got a vibe going.
I can't remember properly, but I seem to recall that Nuno, in interviews, came across as a down-to-earth un-assuming kind of musician - he probably does like doing this.
-
There must be some session musician jobs which are pretty dire, but even then perhaps more because of the personalities than the actual music.
I can barely play anything, but I see Andy's point about different musical styles being fun to play. I'd love to be able to play jazz or country, for example, even though I don't enjoy listening to much of either.
-
Fair comment lads. It was a bit arrogant of me to be judgemental on this.

OK tone hounds... a test.
WITHOUT LOOKING IT UP, use your ears!
Who is playing guitar on this track? (BTW - it's not the dude in the video)

Long shot - but those bends and slides sound very Vai influenced.

no idea, but if i had to guess, andy timmons? don't think it is him, though.

It's George Lynch!!
-
ooh, i don't think i'd ever have got that. he's got a much warmer tone now. :)
-
Only just come back to this thread but listening I can hear George's exotic phrasing - wish I hadn't seen Afghan's post before I listened though - would have made it harder to identify

Here be his reasons:
"I am Playing With Rihanna
Hey all.......Nuno.. here. I wanted to share some news with you... A friend and Music Director, Tony Bruno, reached out to me and asked if I would be interested in playing guitar with Rihanna. Rihanna is a regular in the Bettencourt-house playlist... And as much as I dig her as an artist... my first thought was that there isn't a whole lot of guitar in her music and therefore probably not the greatest fit for what I do.
But before I had a chance to verbalize that thought… Tony said, “before you say anything let me play you the direction she wants to go live.” And when I heard it... I said wow, this rocks… it's heavy and funky... and it hit me that this is MY **##... this is my style... how I love to play... I got very excited at the possibility of playing some of her great songs with a heavier treatment. When I asked Tony Bruno why?... he told me that Rihanna loves bands like Paramore and Linkin Park and loves to push it up a notch or two live in the rock department. Hmmm... let me think? Touring and sharing the stage with a cool and talented artist like Rihanna... and being able to bring what I do passionately to the table as a musician and performer...? IM IN! And having finished the first round of rehearsals... it did not disappoint. Even better than what I expected because she also has the most incredible band, and I get the privilege to add to their wall of sound. It's gonna be fun. Come see and hear it for yourself! "
Oh, well I guess it is better than ending up like Warren Cuccurrulo....;)
-
Wow, is that the same Tony Bruno (aka Tony Rey) who used to play guitar in the mighty Saraya?
(And some band called Danger Danger)
-
playing guitar with Rhianna? :o :o

I think the sound guy got fired afterwards because he forgot to switch her auto-tune on.
-

Good point.
Warren doubtless wishes he had listened to his mother and gone to truck-driving school.

And there we have it.
FWIW its not really my thing but it doesnt seem as offensive and bland as the normal pop fair - I can sort of see why he likes it.
-
yeah, having watched a rihanna live concert on mtv (er... should i admit to that?), it sounded pretty rocky, and her guitar player was letting rip at at least one point with a big solo.
agreed that as far as most pop goes, rihanna is pretty good.
-
I tend to agree that she's not that bad musically, but what the hell is with the woman's hair? And shoulder pads? As a hammerfall fan I'm not easily offended by image but Jesus Christ...
-
Like most high profile pop artists she probably has very little to do with her music, look to the producers for that. For Nuno it's a high profile gig that likely pays a whole lot more than anything else he's done lately. And musical mediocrity continues unabated.
-
i think her hair is nice. and shoulderpads are in at the moment (at least, they were when i started writing this post)...

Yeah, it's unfathomable he likes the music. The lying swine.
What constitutes high profile? Cause with the VERY high profile pop artists, a lot of them are very involved in their music. Certainly far more so than many members of "rock" bands are. And even if they aren't who cares? Effectively it'd just make you a session singer, and nobody holds session musicians in the same disregard as pop stars.
There's a lot more mediocrity in rock music currently, since the advent of myspace, than there is in pop music. We've some fantastic pop music about at the minute.
