Title: under jolly roger - fun with a tele bridge
Post by: gwEm on December 22, 2009, 12:33:08 PM
brought a left hand wilkinson tele bridge and cut it up as you can see from the pictures. once everything fitted I mounted it upside down under the scratchplate of my jolly roger strat. http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=19285.0 (http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=19285.0)

meanwhile i experimented on a friends telecaster with mounting the pickup with rubber pipe and springs. springs were definitely more microphonic, so i went with them on the strat.

at the same time i changed the 0.022uf cap for a 0.047uf one, since i didn't like to roll off.

thought you might like to see some pictures:

Interesting!  Why left-handed?  Because it was cheap or because you didn't need to cut the sides off?

so i could mount it upside down and it be the right way up, if you see what i mean :)

Yes, interesting.  I like your experimenting.....

How does it sound then?

I've recently switched to springs and it does make a little difference, a little more Roy Buchanan squeel if required....

gwEm experiments so the rest of us don't have to!  :)

Really hard to say - it sounds a little more wild and rock'n'roll, and I'm convinced its a bit hotter too. it lost a bit more stratty top end too.

At this point I have to say I've lost all telecaster reference point though. It sounds great, but I've no idea if it sounds like a tele any longer ;)

Yes, I read your post on the last thread and I decided to try it too - it does make a difference indeed.

Maybe "somewhere inbetween a Strat and Tele" suits you better than pure(ish) Tele - nothing wrong with that!  :)

Your experiments are pretty cool - but what happened to the V fanaticism?!

Yes its funny, I have 3 strats, 1 jazzmaster and a cyclone now..

Its easier to experiment with fenders, though I still love Vs of course

edit: ok 4 strats if you count the orange squier plywood guitar
edit 2: i've always liked single coils, but you don't have so many options there as a V owner
