I've been toying with the idea on and off of getting something fenderish.
I think this was all started by the telemaster
http://www.makenmusic.com/productImg/Telemaster_FrontFull.jpg
I've since been looking out for the odder shaped fenders. Toronados, duo-sonics, cyclones, mustangs...
there is something about each one i like, but something that puts me off. mustang trems, switches in odd places, scale length.
I've also debated getting hold of something like a mustang reissue and fitting it with single coil sized humbuckers.
Probably is i don't really want to spend a tonne of cash doing this, or getting parts to get something exact.
I dont have much experience with fenders, i haven't played a strat in YEARS and the first time i touched a Tele was pretty recently too.
just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.
-
Ya know,
If you like different little bits and pieces from different fender guitars....why not just go custom? Then you could you specify which body you like where you want the controls how the neck is set the pickups and everything. I'd give a look at Legra guitars-
http://www.legraguitars.co.uk (http://www.legraguitars.co.uk)
they do some pretty awesome work of which i can vouch from personal experience.
-
the cost i imagine with going custom is what puts me off that idea.
though to be fair, i don't know what the cost would be
-
what scale length do you prefer?
i've a cyclone and its a cool guitar. maybe try a changed scratchplate on one for a different pickup config
-
i've always prefered the gibson feel, but i'm thinking of something with a different vibe for doing some new music with now my band is defunct. I guess when i say 'feel' im actually talking about multiple factors including scale length.
duo-sonic i think would be too short.
i thought about doing something with a mustang/cyclone, forcing them hardtail, getting a switchless plate and going for 1 volume and using a control plate mounted 3 way toggle for pickup selection. just throwing ideas around.
EDIT: that idea applies more to the mustang
-
you probably know this, but the cyclone has 24 3/4" scale length.
i find the mustang/jaguar scale length too short for me.
jazzmaster is 25.5" scale
-
cyclone looks like the best bet i think (telemasters are still awesome though!)
i hope those guitars don't look weird on dudes with big bellies.

The Fano JM6 may suit you, but it's a relic and expensive. Depends what you're after really, or if you want to build yourself something similar:

If you want a heavily modded fender, why not go with Warmoth? a solid colour, alder bodied one with a maple neck would be about $600
-
yeah the fano's are interesting. not too keen on the p90's but they have a few interesting ideas.
bit out the region of the cost i was willing to go to, and they are distributed by sounds great music, who i refure to buy anything from. so thats kind of out.
I have looked at warmouth and USA custom guitar. $600 aint bad if thats what it would come to.
-
Obviously you've got to add picups and hardware to that.

Yep, thought you might take an idea on what could be done from them :)
-
yeah ive looked at fano when you mentioned them, and i like the ideas a lot. like that tele/lp cross breed.
ive had a play on the warmouth site
Jazzmaster body
sunset orange
Humbucker and single coil route (no middle)
top cavities
side jack socket
TOM bridge
in maple/mahogony $390
scale length listed is still 25 1/2 even though i haven't looked at necks
-
you can get conversion necks from warmoth, so you have the option of 24", 24 3/4", 25.5" and 28 5/8" ... all of which will work with the standard bodies and bridge locations

its pretty fun...!
im feeling a jazzmaster style body in this colour with this plate
http://www.warmoth.com/Showcase/images/bodies/large/dp77a.jpg
maple conversion neck, rosewood board, abalone inlays, earvana nut, close as can be to my LPC neck
humbucker in the bridge (zebra emerald?) and a nice single coil in the neck.
top horn toggle
I'd prefer 2x Vol 1x Tone set up, and the side on jack plate.
chrome TOM bridge, with TP-6 tail would be cool.
Im kind of thinking aloud here. going through the motions, without pups, im up to $1000 haha.
EDIT: Cheers Wez, just noticed that once i started looking at neck. pretty good idea
-
There's also the Guitar Fetish and eBay approach if you can bear to wait for the right parts to come along. You can get an offset body Xaviere guitar inexpensively here which has a Strat neck pocket:
http://store.guitarfetish.com/xvseofgu.html
then replace parts as you see fit. It's what I've been doing and I get a real sense of satisfaction from seeing it come together as each part is located and gets installed. Once I'm done this whole build will have cost me around £450 I think which worked out considerably cheaper than the Warmoth or USACG route.
-
ah! it DOES have a strat neck pocket?
I thought there was an issue with lining up the neck heel holes and the pocket.
Im really interested to see how your build turns out.

I thought that there was but I was told by wiser folks here not to be so wet and they were right. There's a thread here about the (not quite finished) thing:

aaaah!
i must have missed the later part of the threads in there.
looks good...
-
One further thing I will say for the Xaviere bodies is that the paint, though almost certainly poly, is very thin - much thinner than any Fender I've played which is probably a good thing. I could also have kept more of the Xaviere components than I did, the stock bridge was fine for example. I wouldn't want anyone to think, just because I ended up replacing everything apart from the body and the jack plate, that the rest of the stock guitar was junk: I just had a very specific plan in mind from the outset.

Depends on your definition of "soon".....
I hope to have a couple of Teles sorted out.... I was going to say "soon" again :? . Hmmmm, let's say before my next birthday!
Then I have a few other bodies and things which started out as one idea and will probably end up as something completely different. Is that procrastination or evolution?
-
dont be daft ;) :P

I like the (surf?) green one. Very nice.

Who me?
That reminds me, I wanted to ask you how much your finishing guy would charge for doing Strat/Tele bodies and/or necks. I have some I was going to oil-finish, but I'm not so keen on the idea now (probably change my mind again in a month or two).
-
Go for an oil finish Phil - the one on La Cabronita is lovely :D
-
i was responding to gwems question... because we all know you buy these bits and bobs but when was the last time we saw one come together. i think we should see at least one xmas project completed ;)
for finishing it might be best to speak to mike direct. Posting to me, to post to mike, to post to me, to post to you would not make much sense. the price really depends what you want. just say i sent you

or
http://www.refinish.ltd.uk/
although i agree with twinfan - oil the necks
-
Thanks for the links, Wez.
I probably will try oil (or Tru-Oil) on at least one neck. But probably not on the bodies, I like a bit of colour at the moment.
Feel like I have to get something finished now......
