Title: There's a 7 string Korina V?! :O
Post by: Nadz1lla on December 23, 2009, 09:03:03 AM
Has anyone had the chance to try one out? Just found out Epiphone released a Korina Flying V 7 string. I've tried their Korina Explorer and was blown away by the gorgeous tone, so this sounds perfect for what I want in my next axe. Only problem is it suffers from the same ailment my Jackson 7 has: 22 frets.  :? Plus I've never been a fan of the V shape, but I'm willing to compromise for the sound I'm after.

Ugh, just noticed, 24.75 scale. Meh. Not for me I'm afraid. The search continues!

So I'm looking for something in about the same construction, Korina, maybe neck-thru, definitely string-thru body. Ideally 25.5 scale and 24 frets. But here's the catch: I'm absolutely skint and will have to save up a while before being able to purchase something. Looking at around the £500 mark, don't think I can stretch that. Oh, and 7 strings. Hah, good luck! I've been checking out Google and all it's spewing up is this darn Epiphone V.  :x

So let's clear this up:

You found out Epiphone make a 7 string korina V but you don't like it, in fact you don't like V shapes.  So now you want a different, non-V, korina 7 string but nobody makes one and even if they did you haven't got any money to buy it anyway.....?  :P

(Sorry!  )

No money to buy it YET...

I see your points. It just seems like almost the perfect axe because nobody but nobody sells a Korina bodied 7 string, unless you want to go custom and then you're talking thousands of pounds. If I could get a 7 string Korina bodied guitar with 24 frets and all the other gubbins listed for Epiphone price I'd be well happy.

I'm going to write a letter of complaint to Epiphone...

"Dear Epiphone,

Where do you get off? Creating a 7 string guitar from the perfect set of materials and then making it 24.75 scale and only 22 frets? And supposing I did fall for your little monopoly, how...oh HOW do I play this thing whilst sitting down? Must I come to your offices and design your guitars for you?

You, sirs, are inept cads. CADS I TELL THEE!"

Or something to that effect.

Oh why couldn't I have fallen in love with playing the Penny Whistle.  :x

if its an epiphone will it definately be solid korina?   dont they quite often use a front and back veneer on their 'korina' models

Don't really know.  :?  Although I did try out the normal 6 string Epiphone Korina Explorer and it utterly owned, really loved the tone it exuded. When I looked at the construction the only body wood mentioned was Korina, then mahogany neck and rosewood fretboard. Sounds like the perfect construction to me. Would be interesting if they hid any additional details about how the body is constructed.

I've read in various places that the Epiphones are veneered over a multi-piece mahogany (or maybe even alder?) body.  I don't think even the veneers are korina, they're just stained/finished that colour.

In other words it's "korina" in the sense of "korina coloured" - a bit like that "chocolate flavoured candy" which isn't actually chocolate.

None of which really matters so long as the guitar sounds good.

Apologies to Epiphone if these are just ill-informed rumours.

i think gwem has an epi korina V with the veneer top, still a nice guitar though - they may do some models with solid korina bodies but not all are

Isn't this weird - what this site does to a chap.

I'm coming up to two years on here... and before I came on here, I'd only heard of "korina" because of the previously mentioned Epi Explorers, I wasn't even aware it was the name of a wood...

I never actually tried one of the Epi Explorers - I accidentally bought a Gibson Explorer that was next to them when I finally found them in the flesh. But, if I'd tried and liked, and bought, I'd have been happy as a pig in sh1t...

But now, two years on, I read the above about "probably only a korina veneer" and my very first reaction was "ah, finally, confirmation that I did make the right decision that day, I might have liked one of those instead  :o... good job I didn't try them..."!!

We're all feeling it, I can tell..."None of which really matters so long as the guitar sounds good", and "still a nice guitar though", etc...

Still, at least I spose I've learnt that korina's a wood in my time here so far!

Good luck with the search Nadz - sounds like it might be a tough one. I'm not sure that letter would work, mind, but it really made me laugh.

Yes you can play a V sitting down. Just put the bottom point behind your right calf and your right forearm going over the top of the body holds it nicely in place. I always play mine sitting down and it's actually very comfortable this way.

For sub £500 I think he's gonna have to let go of the Korina

I was hoping I wouldn't have to when I saw how cheap the Epiphones were, but yeah, most other things made from Korina are sky-high in the price so I think I may have to let go if I can find something else with a suitable dollop of those beautiful, beautiful mids.

I have heard Schecters do nice 7's. Anyone have opinions on those. But that Agile does look rather tasty. not sure about the Maple fretboard though.

The decent Schecter 7s are in the £700-800 range, and TBH I much prefer my Agile. They come with (really nice) ebony boards as well as maple, they're just out of stock at the moment.

Sweet, the Agile does look very nice, probably worth investigating! Cheers.
