Title: Bridge PU for Jackson Sl-1
Post by: psalterium on December 31, 2009, 11:47:20 AM
Hi everyone, this is my first post, and there's no better wat to get started than asking for an advice :D

So, here's the problem: I need to swap the duncan invader that I currently have in my jackson sl-1 with something different. There's nothing wrong with the invader actually, but I'm trying to achieve a completely different sound. I figured out what my "ideal pickup" should sound like:

- Moderate/hot output (I play through an ENGL amp, I don't need a super-high output pickup, I'd rather go for something a little bit vintage-flavoured).
- Deep, big sound and great clarity.
- Dynamic and responsive pickup (I tend to vary the way I pick a lot, and I need my guitar to "sense" that).

Reading on this forum, I came to think that the two candidates could be HD and CS... What do you think? (remember it is an alder/maple/mahogany guitar).

Hello & welcome - you're not the first person to make their first post a "which pickup" thread & you certainly won't be the last... :)

Holy Diver is a great choice for a maple/alder neck-thru Jackson (when you say "alder/maple/mahogany" don't you actually mean alder/maple/ebony?)

I'm not sure I'd describe it as "vintage" or "moderate" output though - it's probably not too far behind the Invader in terms of outright power (but streets ahead in clarity & dynamics).  Make no mistake, it's a metal player's pickup (not that you can't use it for other things - it has one of the warmest clean tones you'll ever hear).

Yeah, I meant ebony off course ;) As I thought, the HD seems to be really appreciated in bright guitars... And yes, I'm playing mainly metal, so this is pretty much what I'm looking for... Thanks!

HD is a good choice but don't forget the Crawler bridge pickup if you want more vintage on steroids type tone
It's a bit more open in the midrange than the HD though - figure out which will work best for you

Ended up installing a cold sweat this morning. OMG. The Engl-alder/maple-cold sweat combo is just awesome. Tight as I like it, crazy definition, warm organic sound. I really love the slightly vintage voice, it is exactly what I was looking for. Thank everyone for your help, I think I'm sticking with BKP.
