Happy New Year folks!
Any resolutions out there in BKP land? Aside from trying to lose some weight (somewhere between half and one stone would be good!) I'm going to:
* Not buy any guitars this year
There. I've said it.
Now can I stick to it, that's the question?
-
I highly doubt that Dave, but you have seemed to slow down though.
I'm also trying to lose some weight, I already started before Christmas but after Christmas it all went away!
But not really a resolution so I would say..
Throw myself into more opprotunities (having planned that is) and.. focus more trying to play a playlist of songs one after the one, perfectly.
Simple but it's something.
-
I need to get back into the habit of lifting weights again, relearn and get better at chords, more improvised learning to cook :D
anyone trying to lose weight, with all my health related reading recently I now think the best way is to find out your BMR/basal metabolic rate aka amount of calories burnt for just living without doing a thing, then try to limit your calorie intake to this many
so for me I burn 1800 calories a day doing nothing and combine that with trying to eat mostly low GI/glycemic index foods, ie less processed stuff, I actually struggle to eat enough this way, only eat the bad stuff on weekends
I also prefer to walk everywhere then waste money on buses
can't beat a bit of flatbread pizza or curry made using soup!!! :D
-
i'll build a modern paula, Warpig loaded... that's my resolution
-
Need to play more guitar! Think I have a couple more stones to lose, as well, but I'm not that fussed about my weight at the moment, I have done well over the last 6 months.
Need to get more money saved too, it just won't stop going outwards!
-

How do you find this out?
-
For me, get fit(ter), lose weight- about a stone, get more sleep, become a better guitarist and bass player. A number of exams to pass this year, write an albums worth of songs for a new project but more important than any of those, see my two sons (they both live out of the UK).
-
I need to get back to the diet I did over the summer - lost 10kgs but have put a couple back on and need to trim back down.
Getting to the gym on a more regular basis
Getting some computer stuff done
Launching my 20th anniversary model
Learning a few more songs
-
Get some more guitars built (and some sold!), lose some weight, hopefully do the london-brighton bike run (if I can get a decent bike in the next month or so), work hard at work, and enjoy having weekends free again! :)
-
Resolutions only serve to mock you a year later when you realise you said the same last year and achieved little. To that end I'm pitching my resolutions at what will likely be the truth anyway, thus any mild improvement on the list below will make my year a success.
Play less guitar
Watch more football
Drink more beer
Put on half a stone
Look at more stuff on the internet instead of playing guitar
Buy more stuff I don't need and can't afford
-
Tom, that's exactly how I feel. You couldn't have said it better and your list couldn't have been more appropriate!
Nice one. :D
-
I never make resolutions. If I was going to stick to something I'd do it straight away not wait until new year.
Anyone trying to lose weight should get some scales that measure body fat. That way you don't lose motivation when the scales say you are the same weight as you were last week but in reality you have put on muscle and lost fat. That's my 2 pence anyway.
Jonathan. What are you thinking for the 20th anniversary model? Is it top secret?
-
Jonathan. What are you thinking for the 20th anniversary model? Is it top secret?

There. I've said it.
If I make "resolutions" I tend to abandon them completely the first time I backslide a bit, so I'll go for "good intentions" instead:
Blimey, we are a bunch of fat bar-stewards on this forum, all wanting to lose weight! I'd really like to lose at least two stone, but I'd be happy to get down to 11 stone for starters (I'm 12 and a half now).
I'm not going to buy any new guitars this year, but I am - definitely! - going to put some Warmoth ones together.
I want to clear as much junk as possible from my flat and maybe get the kitchen, bathroom and windows sorted out with a view to moving somewhere bigger (and in a less undesirable area, I'm sick of this place).
By not buying guitars I hope to have the money for a new PC, HD TV and Blu-ray player (we'll see about that...)
I'd also like to spend less time on the internet and more playing guitar (which definitely won't happen)
-
You don't look fat though Phil, really not too far wrong for your height. Whereas in March (BKP meet) I must have been near 15 stone, maybe a little over. Way less now btw :P
It may not be economical for you to buy a Bluray player, you will suddenly notice the difference of quality and want to update your back catalogue of films - which I presume is large
-

Too kind, Will, too kind! You didn't look hefty either, maybe all that hair helped diguise it!
But 12+ stone is too much for 5'6" - my dad and my brother are only a bit over 9 stone each and they don't look that skinny!
And on a serious note, my dad has just been diagnosed with diabetes, his mother had it too in old age. I may not be too much at risk for the next 25 or 30 years, but it did make me think I should look after myself a bit better.

You could be right! I've got a lot of DVDs - I always guess at 2,000 but it could be way more. But many of them are pretty obscure so they're either not available on Blu-ray (yet) or the source materials wouldn't benefit much from a hi-def transfer. And from what I've seen, a lot of transfers are still being badly mastered so the Blu-rays aren't really much better than the DVDs.
I'll concentrate on absolute favourites, and things which never had decent DVD releases, and see what happens....
-
Stop wasting time on forums - Aside from this one, I just get pissed off with all the pedantic know it alls in internet land.
My other resolution is to learn German before my 11 month old son does, so that he cannot manipulate me against my (German) wife. A real pain as German is pretty useless to me otherwise and the time could be spent playing the guitar.
-

http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/
used to know of a better one that also told you how much you burnt with daily activity, can't find it now :/

mate showed me a screenshot of robocop bluray vs dvd, the dvd was clearly better!

Will look forward to seeing how they turn out

My phone has a rude BMI indicator on it. Iput in my stats and it called me "fat". At least it was to the point.
No real resolutions here, but I'm going to cut down on my drinking (can't get pissed every night, especially having to get up with the baby) which should help with the weight too as I drink real ale.
Hopefully by this time next year, I'll have a new job in a different industry and be living in a bigger house (which might actually fit our stuff in). Oh, I'm also going to build a fountain pen, so may be hitting people for scr@ps of wood
-
according to bmi i am overweight :( just had a pizza hut to celebrate :)
TM - you can have any scr@ps of wood you need, but please dont hit me for it :)

I'm 20 now... looking forward to loose 2 stones and at least 10% of fat (more important than weight, if I'll keep on rugby - my fatness is 29% now :( )
I say this because I'm on physical therapy, so no rugby for a while... My right shoulder is bad since June (gave a soft tackle in a 15 years old kid afraid of break him in two and ended bad to me)...
I was on P.T., but had a game and couldn't be absent... my shoulder went worse (I'm loosehead prop)... Doc said if P.T. don't put things on place, will need to go to the knife... :( I fear that it makes my retirement one year after I start playing... that just sucks...
Will try also to start drawing and/or playing guitar again, but now I'm only about to get a decent shoulder...
-
Get swimming Fernando, that's a big help for any joints. And get yourself a good physio (fingers crossed prices are reasonable where you are). You can't look after your shoulders (and knees) enough.
I had to stop playing rugby at 18 with my right shoulder wrecked because, basically, I didn't take doctors advice as seriously as I should have.
-
On the first doctor (the first Physio) I didn't take much serious because he didn't take me serious... Rugby is like the most unknow sport in Brazil...
He forgot that the amateur player must have even more attention than the professionals,...
Now I ain't doing anything, I feel pain while holding the handrail at bus... After it I'll do whatever the doctor and the physiotherapist says to keep it good!
I'm doing physio with the guy that works for Santos Football Club, that one from Pelé... I live in Santos at the time, he's the best physio here... Glad that I've health plan from my company :)
-
To cook different foods more often. We got some cook books, so we're gonna use em!

MIne are fitness and guitar related!
- Play lots more guitar
- Do 30,000 chin ups
- Run 750 miles
- Save money for more guitar gear - would like to find an HB guitar that I like!

You can't have my Modern Eagle or Korina McCarty ;)

Damn, that's what I was fishing for!! They are the only two HB guitars that I have tried and liked enough to see myself owning!

whatever you do, AVOID doing chin ups putting the bar behind your neck, that's just asking for an horrible injury

:o Are these serious? Over what timescale? How big are the bite-sized chunks you'll presumably be dividing them into?
I couldn't do 30,000 chin ups if I started now and lived another 100 years. :?
-
The chin ups are - I'm averaging 110 a day at the moment (I started doing them on 01/12). I reckon I'll be able to reach that, I do them in sets of 5 or 10.
Not too sure about the miles yet. I've not done any this year and had planned to start this week - just waiting for the snow and ice etc to clear!
-
I admire your dedication! I've never been able to do chin ups, even when I was 20 years younger and 3 stone lighter. Always found them quite painful.
I used to be able to do loads of dips and pressups, but I can't really do them anymore either. :(
-
Cheers Philly - I started slowly in December by doing 10 a day and slowly built up. I ended up doing 1185 in a month and am finding it easier by the day. I'm sure I'll get bored in a few weeks time though! I can't do press-ups, never erally been able to. Probbly becuase I was either doing them wrong or didn't stick to it to build up strength.

I've just found a video of you on youtube, Ian :D

:o I can't do all of those variations just yet! I'm just doing the palms facing you version, I think I'll be giving the two finger and one handed approach a miss. The guy in the vid is obviously quite light and very strong.
[pathetic excuse]I reckon it's more difficult when you weigh 14 stone[/pathetic excuse]

[pathetic excuse]I reckon it's more difficult when you weigh 14 stone[/pathetic excuse]
I think it's a reasonable excuse, but it probably depends how much of that 14 stone is lard! :P
I'm no stronger at 12.5 stone than I was at 10.5, so I reckon that extra 2 stone of blubber must severely hamper my ability to do body-weight-based exercises. My brother can do chin-ups and I can't, although I think I'm still a bit stronger than him.... but I'm a full sack of potatoes heavier!
The fact that you're tall probably makes a difference - long levers vs. short levers must come into it somewhere.
-

 A bit less than a few months ago but still more lard than muscle!

way too fast! he's using momentum and will get injured eventually
-
Ian, I weight about thirteen and a half at the moment, and I can do a couple of one handed pressups.
I then figured that it would be doing me more good to just work on the standard one for a bit longer rather than strain myself with 2 reps :P
-
Back in my thinner, chin up and rock climbing days, I used to have a chin up bar on my bedroom door and one of these above it:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Metolius-Simulator-Fingerboard-climbing-training-board_W0QQitemZ150402305858QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Sporting_Goods_Climbing_Mountaineering?hash=item2304ad0f42
Had a couple of climbing holds going along my wall too. Used to make it a bit less dull.

That's not a pathetic excuse, or even an excuse - 14 stone is 90KG (give or take). How many people at the gym do you see doing 90KG on the lat pulldown? Not that many... :)

Not sure! I never got to the gym :)
I'm on 1,400 chin ups for January so far. Only 11.5 months to go now!
-
Right you orrible lot.
Who has kept up their New Year Resolutions and who has sacked them off?
-
Still on the chin ups - done about 5000 so far. I'm a little bit behind on running but did record a PB in the Goring 10k today!
-
You should be able to do them with 1 arm behind your back soon if not already!
-
Lost some weight and have passed an exam. Learned a few riffs and should be seeing one of my sons soon- so progress of a sort.
-

Not quite yet! I think I might have a mild form of RSI - elbows are aching quite a bit.
-
Lost some weight and have passed an exam. Learned a few riffs and should be seeing one of my sons soon- so progress of a sort.
That's great news!! What riffs did you learn :)
good stuff on meeting one of your sons as well.
-
learnt some chords, not been practising changing chords enough but I've got better, still not lifted any weights
still slowly losing weight by taking in same amount of calories as I burn when idle/BMR thing, 11 stone now, not been this light in years!!! worked out if I can lose a stone of just fat I'd be borderline 6 pack :D
increased my calcium intake as a lot of people have a deficiency in the stuff, although hard cheese is a good source it tends to be high in saturated fat :(
started using low fat yoghurt to make proper healthy curry, next step is to using caramelised onions with curry powder instead of curry paste
taken elmlea cream completely out of my diet because it's got TRANS FAT in it!!! on the label they even get to group it with the unsaturated fat!!! how is that legal?!!!
-

Thanks- the son I am expecting to see lives in Arizona so it isn't like I can get to see him that readily.
Riffs, well mainly for the band-we have started playing a few Lizzy tracks and we ( the other guitarist and I) have worked out the harmony parts. First time I've ever done that ( bear in mind that for years I was a bass player) in a band before.
-
Well I blew mine out of the water
Decided I'm a guitar addict, and always will be. I just love trying stuff out!
I'm not fighting it any more.

Quite right too !
Especially as the 'addiction' is so multi-faceted , all encompassing , social - and life enhancing . It would be rude not to . :)
-
More God, More Family, More Guitar, Less T.V.!!!!!!
"Amen" to all that. :D
-
Good to see people are doing ok with stuff.
Except Dave - but Dave your spectacular fail makes for pretty guitar pictures
