Title: convince me to get a les paul
Post by: bucketshred on November 19, 2005, 12:48:17 AM
Right, after being a devout hater of Les Pauls (love the look and tone, hate the feel) I played on mate of mines tonight (80's LP) which was T3H S3X!

When slung low, they just feel lovely and they look and sound hard rockin' as $%&#...never knew their necks were that skinny and the body resonated like a mutha!

Now, I have an Ibanez PGM on order, I'm actually tempted to cancel the order and get a Gibson/Tokai instead, someone convince me to go ahead with this!  I would really like a sunburst type LP for that hard rockin' tone with the possibility of shredding when I want to (oh yes, shredding on a low slung LP, if Zakk can do it, why can't I?)

Got £700 to spend!  and you have til tomorrow!

dont bother, my LP Classic was poor.

It played ok in the shop (i spent an hour on it..)

then after a while at home i noticed all the little quality issues, and the neck started to go off, it never stayed in tune and developed a couple of dead spots, so i had to keep taking it back to get tweaked.. in the end i sold it, and  with the £950 i got back, i had my own custom axe built and its perfect 8)

PGM and LP is a BIG difference too lol... LPs neck heels are shiteter mc shite and more trouble than its worth imo

Those Edwards alexi laiho flying vs look good, $925inc shipping would be within your budget... even with VAT 8)

They're apples and oranges!

A custom guitar by Feline, or one of the others on the forum, would be very cool   A much better investement IMO 8)

Just get one, you know it makes sense! ;)

For your budget, you're either looking at an LP Studio or a Tokai/Epi Elite. Just remember to try a load out first, as I don't think the Tokai neck will suit you, what with it being a bit chunkier than an Ibanez, though not as chunky as a '59 LP.

grrr i want both of those guitars - i'd probably go for the LP though. I'd have an Epi Elitist! or another guitar MIJ for giobson (Orville)

Just watch a DVD of Led Zep or Guns n' Roses. Makes me want a Les Paul anytime.

Be sure to get one with a '60's slim taper neck, it'll suit your taste better.

hello folks, about the 60's neck:  when i bought my les paul, i assumed i'd prefer the slimmer neck, but i tried quite a few of both the 50's and 60's ones, and ended up going for the 50's!  it just felt more comfortable in the long run.  it's odd because my main guitar has a skinny modern neck, which i love, but it just didn't feel right on the les paul.  it makes lower down chording more awkward and really doesn't help higher up because that big old heel is still in the way.  how slash and zakk wail on these things amazes me!
i think the general thought here is you should stick with a modern rock axe for your shredding, and hold on to the les paul dream until you can afford a second, luxury, guitar.  go for practicality first.

Nah, flog the shred-axe and buy something with a tree trunk for a neck. ;)

I was thinking of the Tokai/Edwards route anyway...

I think I'll stick with the PGM for a while, and if I don't like it, I'll sell it and get a LP.  It's going to be a right touh decision but I'm still very tempted by a Paul, they just felt right :D

get a custom LP with a better heel\neck joint and the neck with same specs as the PGM, and some BKPs.

bucketheads LPs are 'shred' style custom ones with a decent neck joint...

Can you get a Gibson LP for £700?

The only ones are the studios and they arent quite the real deal. Whichever you go with, chances are you'll probably end up replacing the pickups anyway...a custom would be a good option, probably cost just over a grand.

But if you get a studio + new pickups = £850
Custom (perfect job) = £1000+

id think heavily about getting the custom. Then you could specify how you want the neck etc to be.

could you save an extra £200-300 in the 8weeks or so it takes for a custom axe to be built?

Id seriously drop Bob @ Legra a line and get a quote on a custom job, and ask Laz & Feline aswell while your at it.

Theres a big difference between a PGM and a LP, you remind me of me a few months back, i had a grand to spend, i went for the LP instead of either a PGM or a Jem, thinking, 'well i always wanted a LP again, and i dont like the way the volume controls are on a strat style guitar' (too close to pickup, and i have a weird picking style, LPs are ok for this, as is the PGM..).

It was a bad move! i thought the neck thing would be ok, but it wasnt, it was a nightmare to play down the 'dusty' end, not to mention wanting to change the pickups and having to deal with the dodgy QC issues....

you need to have a think about what music you play, if its shredding type of stuff id re-consider getting an LP, in my experience dealing with the guitar takes alot away from the enjoyment of playing, and it limited me...

Just my thoughts on this, having done it already this year... custom guitars arent as far away as you think, and the ability to put a deposit now and pay the balance when its ready makes them even more affordable... and youd get something you can keep as its made EXACTLY how you want :)

Whichever way you go, your gonna get a good axe i think, but which one its gonna be is the $1million questio..

oh yeah, mine cost me less than an LP classic, includng the case, bkps, a hell of alot better axe quality wise + peice of mind knowing its exactly what i want 8)

If you do end up having something made a scarfed joint could be quite helpful with getting to the dusty end. Check out the Neil Schon model on the Gibson Custom website. Also, the Yamaha SG2000 might be worth a look if you want that kind of girth in your tone but want high fret access too. You could even look at carved top super strat style guitars, I know Jackson do one and I'm sure Ibanez must too.

But none of them has the coolness of an actual Les Paul, sounds like snobbery I know.

I'm pretty much sold on getting a Tokai, they seem like the best VFM and according to the website, I can get them in any colour I want...

I will be BKp'd

Decisions....

Amen!  :)

I love LPs (and LP styled-guitars). And like Ratrod said, just watching Jimmy Page or Slash play generates stupendous LP-lust.

My only guitar (besides a Charvette on the other side of the atlantic) is a Gibson LP Std, c. 1990 manufacture, bought second-hand about 12 years ago, I've always been very happy with it.  I would certainly "try before you buy" though: Gibson's lack of quality control is as legendary as their ability to turn out a decent axe; I strummed away at cruddy and tasty Gibsons from a wide variety of eras (and prices) when looking for mine. And you do pay more for the word Gibson on the headstock; so its worth considering an Epiphone (or, these days, an Orville I guess!) and changing out the electronics.

I have no intention of ever selling my LP, though I certainly hope to load it with some BKPs before very much longer :)

I was going down the Tokai route, although I'd originally planned getting a LP Studio. I changed my mind about the Tokai when I realised I didn't want all the fancy binding stuff of the custom. I decided to order a Gordon Smith, but its got a six month waiting list unless you buy from a shop. The Gordon Smith has build quality better than a Tokai (which are better than the LP Studios by miles), and it meant I get something unique. If you do buy a Tokai, make sure you buy a Japanese one. There are some Tokai's which cost the same as a proper LP standard except you get a bookmatched AAAA maple cap which you would only get on a custom shop Gibson.

Hahah my mates getting a mailorder Gibson LP Studio "coz its cheaper than a shop", I think he will be sorely disappointed if he doesnt try it   He wont even consider Tokai or Orville  :?

I had a Gorson Smith GS-2 and didn't rate it.  I brought it myself for Christmas a couple of years back.  Same Christmas I got my son a Gibson SG Special.  The Gibson was a way better guitar.  It felt better, rang better acousticly, sounded better through an amp.

I'd got the GS 2nd hand.  New it was the same price as the SG.  I sold the GS and brought an Epiphone Sheraton.

I played a GS 12 string Les Paul copy years ago in a shop.  It was a fantastic guitar.  Problem was I was a student at the time so couldn't stump up the cash.

...and speak of Les Pauls.  For my 21st my Dad got me a Gibson Les Paul Custom Lite.  It was black and boy was I gutted.  I wanted a sun burst Standard like Jimmy Page.  Problem was he didn't ask me what I wanted he just went out an got me a guitar.  :(

17 years later the LP's still pritty much unplayed.  It feal like a very well made guitar.  You play a chord and you can hear the individual strings.  It sustains forever but I've just never got on with it.

I've never been able to decide if deep down I don't like Les Pauls or if it's because it doesn't look like Jimmy Page's.

I have to admit I consciously decided not to get a "pretty" Les Paul since I was pretty sure the plain black one I got would cost less and play as well. Yeah, it's a shame mine doesn't look as cool as Pagey's, but nobody's filming me!  Besides, if I were that rich, I could always get a prettier guitar :)

I admit that I'd want a pretty Les Paul just like Pagey's, but an all black studio would be nice too!

I think I'll go down the Tokai route if I'm not too keen on the PGM, but (and this sounds really snobby) a Gibbo is a Gibbo!

you could always buy a gibson decal and stick it on...or get a luthier to do the inlay  The perfect crime!

I'd love a Gibson Les Paul, but the quality issues and Gibson's unethical business practices just totally put me off, so I guess I'll have to search for a custom guitar builder that can make me a '59 copy and I'll fit some BKP's in it.

Do you think a good guitar tech person would be able to take OUT the Epi inlay on my headstock and just fill it in black? Its not that I'm ashamed its an Epi.. but blank headstock adds a sense of mystery   Plus I just think it'd look really cool.

Have a look at the site of the guy who does my repairs. He may be able to help you:

He lives in Northampton so isn't far from you, and he isn't expensive either.
