Title: Instrument/amplifier insurance
Post by: _tom_ on January 10, 2010, 09:19:31 PM
Think its about time I got my stuff insured as there's a lot of money to lose if it gets nicked. Is it worth going with specialist insurance over just adding it to contents insurance? I'd probably want to put the following on the policy:

3 guitars (is it even worth insuring the Pearl though, as it was so cheap and bought 2nd hand?)
3 sets of BKPs
Amp
Cab/speakers

That might be too specific for a standard contents insurance company, I think? Any suggestions for a decent insurer?

Cheers :)

from the back of my memory, I seem to recall that if you join the Musicians Union you get a good deal on gear insurance through them - worth looking into.

My home insurers used to cover that base ; by me specifying the gear as ' named items' on the basic house policy - then paying the modest addition for them to be covered as 'personal property away from the home' . We tend to forget that some folk carry more around in laptops, top end phones and luggage than many Gigsters.  That idea may not be as elegant as the one suggested by H.T.H , but I was pleasantly surprised how relatively cheap it was at the time, If I did but ask - and I knew they where swift to settle in case of a claim. "The Devil You Know " and all that.

The people that do my home insurance would only cover up to £400 of musical instruments and only if they were named items. So I would check that they are fully covered.

I currently use musicguard insurance, they cover amp breakdowns (which came in very handy) and accidental damge/loss.

Amp breakdown cover sounds very good, as does accidental damage. I'll check out the current suggestions, thanks!

No idea but it's something I need to look into.  My biggest fear is not gear being stolen but me leaving something at a gig as I'm pretty forgetful.

Even a small pedal board can be worth £500.  In fact a quick tot up and I must take about £2500 quids worth to a gig and I have a pretty modest amount of gear.

This, earplugs and backing up your music should bedone before any GAS shopping....

here's the link advising the MU members get preferential rates/deals...

I seem to recall that joining the MU wasn't expensive - should do it myself.
