Title: Special Edition or Fake Les Paul?
Post by: DimeZakk on January 10, 2010, 09:36:03 PM
Is this guitar some kind of special edition or Custom Gibson or is it a very well done Fake?

I've never seen a custom with a rosewood board, not 100% sure but looks fishy to me.

I reckon that's a very convincing fake. Serial number looks wrong to me, but I may be talking out of my derrière.

Does look odd, why is the truss rod cover not screwed on? Was it originally a 3 screw one?

FAKE

There are a few giveaways
Bridge is wrong - Gibson always use the Nashville bridge made by Schaller - it never has a screwdriver slot in the post (even though that works well)
Tailpiece looks wrong too shape-wise - looks like a cheap copy part
Truss rod cover is wrong
Screws are of a kind that Gibson dont use
The rosewood board is wrong
The inlays look like plastic instead of real MOP
Nut is a far eastern kind and not the same as Gibson use
strap buttons are wrong - Gibson still insist on using those cr@ppy tiny aluminium or brass ones like they did in the 50s and if they are replaced then it is usually with straplocks

Pickup rings look wrong - just different to what Gibson use
Frets go over the binding instead of having the plastic nibs at the end - not true to Gibson

Take it as read - it's a fake

Think i'm gonna go with fake. 3 Hole truss rod cover is usually the easiest way to tell, and it looks as though this one is. Since, as Will said, it isn't screwed on.

Isn't the bridge mounted backwards too?

I assume this is being shown on ebay or somewhere?

Case is wrong as well - just NOT what Gibson use

Thanks for the answers. No it is not on Ebay (for this reason is suspect).

Are you saying 3 hole truss rod covers are std. on a Gibson? If you are you're talking our of your arse! Gibson use 2 screws, that fake has 2 screws, plus if it was a custom they would more than likely be gold plated. It also looks like the cover was cut out by a blind monkey the more I look at it.

Looks like Edwards to me.

Which means it will be better than a Gibson

i noticed the truss rod cover was very wonky, but none of the other points pointed out.. guess i don't know my les pauls that well, but spotted the fake anyway :)

it its keenly priced, it might be good value

Definitely fake!

Lots of little details wrong as Jon has pointed out, but I think the rosewood board is the "wrongest" thing.

To add to all the other wrongness, the serial number is the wrong font and size.

I don't think they stamp "Made In USA" on the headstock any more either, which is at odds with the 2005 supposed serial number.

Yes they do, along with the year.

lol, no i mean fakes normally have 3 hole! I read it in a guitar magazine ages ago. It looks like this guy has tried to cover up that fact by using a 2 hole plate.

Cheers Shobet - my mistake.  I still reckon the font is wrong/too big on the serial number?

Agreed, no offence meant. The more I look at that guitar the more it shouts chicken chow mein at me.

Looking at the fretboard, nut and bridge makes me think this is an Epiphone.

I have one of these eastern fakes in my workshop at the moment, anyone that knows LPs will pick them straight away, there are many tell tale signs if you know what your looking for as most have been pointed out previously, the guitar that I have here fooled the last two buyers, only when it was brought to me for a set up was the discovery made! here are a few more findings, the top is almost certain to be a photo top, remove thr truss rod cover to reveal the normal allen head adjuster, Gibson always use a single hex nut, in the case of this one only the top screw of the truss rod cover is screwed into any wood the lower is just there to look right as the wood is routed out for the allen head truss rod adjuster, all pots, pickups and switch are wrong, removing the p/us reveals a bit of a mess too. Be careful when buying something that just does not ring true, if you are worried remove the truss rod cover, it must not have an allen bolt,
.

Just bought a Gibson Gothic LP, or I'd be all over it. Thanks though. :good:

I think Dave was being cheeky - hinting that you had posted a reply on the wrong thread - rather than the rigs one you started.

Didnt you use to use rack gear ?
