Allrighty, some time ago I tried to go FRFR with the Axe for my metal band ... and failed - live it was awful FRFR, thin and earpiercing.
Now a friend asked this week to borrow the Axe for a studio project where he needs some direct brootalz toanz, so I went and checked the Axe forum, got word that Redwirez cab sims are the way to go, bought their 1960/V30 and had a go at programming some patches for him. Now compare sounds from Then and Now.
THEN:
-----------
In June 2009 I posted these as direct metal attempts:
1. Ueber: http://www.klangforschungszentrum.de/temp/2_1_Ueber.mp3
2. Recto New: http://www.klangforschungszentrum.de/temp/2_2_RectoNew.mp3
3. Recto Orange: http://www.klangforschungszentrum.de/temp/2_3_RectoOrange.mp3
NOW:
--------
Today, using the Redwirez cab, I did these (Emerald bridge):
1. Boosted Diezel: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/1_Diezel_Boosted.mp3
2. Boosted Recti: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/2_Recto_boosted.mp3
3. Boosted 5150: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/3_5150_boosted.mp3
4. Not boosted SLO: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/4_SLO_Unboosted.mp3
5. Not boosted Ueber: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/5_Ueberschall_Unboosted.mp3
Mixes of the before (Panned hard L/R):
1. Recto and 5150: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/6_Recto_And_5150_Boosted_Pa.mp3
2. Diezel and Ueber: http://www.thegutbusters.com/temp/higains_bernie/7_Diezel_And_Ueber.mp3
Watcha think, is it gotten any better?

Big difference! Awesome improvement - the mid range bias of the V30 is certainly coming through in that sim - in brootalz this is a good thing. I wonder what would happen if you used a K100 or a Swamp Thang sim (do such sims exist?)

Yeah, what I thought. Funny thing is in June I was so dependent on it and programmed my arse off for 3 patches which all sounded the same, and today it took me 2h to get the IRs, dial in the tones and do the recordings
No K-100 I think, here is the list of what they have:

really like the diezel clip, how close is this to a real vh4 because I've never heard a good clip of one that did it for me
never found a k100 impulse either and I did more than a fair bit of looking, stuck with an engl v30 impulse in the end
-
Yeah, definite improvement. The new tones are perhaps a little too midrangey if anything, but they certainly sound more real. You should try the Redwire Mesa Recto cab impulses, they are excellent!

About 2:20 - 4:37 in this is a fairly good representation of the VH4's sound

I 2nd that, big improvement!!!!!
-
Massive improvement! It's like night and day. :D

hi Hunter, how difficult is it to get those cab sims loaded into the Axe ?
-
cab impulses are just tiny wave files, axe-fx uses a different file extension but I think you just load them over usb, no idea if you can do it direct or if you need to use the axe-fx software for pc

Well, redwirez offers them in Axe compatible format (amongst other, better quality formats that you get as well with the purchase).
It took me 10 minutes playing around with the Axe editor and they were in.

you're sounding a bit too good these days hunter ;)

Thanks Gwem, I thought you might like that ;)
Nothing like the real life experience of a pumping amp behind you, but for brootalz I'm not yet sure if virtual might be my way to go after all...
Rigs might change all the time, one thing remains constant though: those square little boxes under our strings we're so passionate about on this forum. :P
