bloody lovelly

Oooh! Nice one Phil! Looks superb! A Japanese one I see...
I've just had a slight pang of GAS for one of these, which I'd put a mini-humbucker in - the new PRS SE One Korina:

the se one does look nice!
shame woogie isnt around much now - he would go crazy for that tokai - more so if it was lefty
-
Bet that rig sounds great
-
Nice one Philly.

Yep! :D How did you spot that so quick? The two-screw trussrod cover?
The only bummer is, whichever courier company delivered it obviously whacked the box at some point and crushed the volume and tone knobs (the pots popped through the top of the knobs and the reflector bits were in the bottom of the box). :(
I don't think the wood's damaged but I need to dismantle it to be sure.

Yeah, it didn't influence my purchase - I always loved the look of these - but I remember the one Jake had. No neck bends for mine though!!!

Not mine! Everything in the pic - except the guitar! - belongs to the previous owner. :)
-
Lovely SG Jr Phill!
I'm thinking in build a SG Jr or a LP Jr if I win the Unofficial Warmoth forum's raffle... Perhaps a Esquire...
Lovely this "foot on the door, punch on the face" attitude of the Juniors
-
sweet :D
so you lasted a fortnight?
-
so you lasted a fortnight?
Not even that. Nine days, if I exclude the day I actually paid for it.
But maybe it'll be like last year. Not counting the Warmoth stuff (bear with me!) I only bought the 339, and that was way back in March. Nowhere near as bad as the previous few years.
I'm not GASing for anything, so we'll see..... but this Tokai just turned up by chance so maybe it would be foolish to think nothing else will....
-
Speaking of; what happened to roo?
Oh, HNGD
-
That's a sweet looking SG! How many SGs do you own now? 4?
That SE Korina looks sweet Dave... Always liked the SE Ones.
-

Just the three - the SG-155, this one (does anyone know the model number, by the way?) and my trusty green SG-X.
-
hehe, i was being charitable about the fortnight, i was going to say, "not counting when you bought it", but it looked like a stock picture, so i couldn't be sure you hadn't just ordered it today and it hadn't arrived yet.
sorry to hear it turned up a bit bashed. I'm always super-paranoid before stuff arrives that it's not going to get bashed. I've been fairly lucky so far, I don't think anything has got bashed, but there's always a first time and it happens... :(
EDIT: http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Tokai-USG90-SG-Junior-See-Through-White-Single-P90_W0QQitemZ250434787399QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK_Musical_Instruments_Guitars_CV?hash=item3a4f139847
model number is usg90, assuming you bought a newish one. :)

A white SG type guitar is a beautiful thing.

Oh lawks, I saw that ad and didn't even register the model number.
It is indeed a newish one, in fact the guy bought it from Richtone's eBay shop just a few weeks ago. Then he acquired a vintage SG Special so the Tokai had to go.
So in effect, I've got a new one (albeit with broken knobs  ) a bit cheaper than Richtone's price. But I'll be changing the electronics, of course, so I'd have had to buy US-fit knobs anyway. Fingers crossed the wood isn't cracked.

It doesn't show very well in the pics, but it's almost a blonde finish, you can see the mahogany underneath (not in a Gibson "quick lick of satin undercoat" kind of way). A bit more interesting than the solid white SG-75 I had.

for what its worth, i also approve :)

I take it you'll be growing some flowing locks and doing a Rick Parfitt on us now Phil?
-
Cool guitar, one day I will get me a White SG... they just look the dogs danglies. Very nice.
-

Good god no!
I had the flowing golden locks in my youth, but they're not coming back unless I win the lottery and become a gentleman of leisure.
Although I wouldn't mind doing a Rick in the sense of settling down with a nice fitness instructor 15 years younger than me....
-
Very nice guitar Philly...
Please do the following for just for me...
- Put on your best Marks & Spencer dressing gown
- Strap on you cool new guitar
Turn up the PC speakers and play this loud.... skip to 2min 40 if you're in a hurry!

Nice... :D
-
I can't see the vid.... is it Jake-era Ozzy?
-
That looks awesome :) I'm a big fan of SGs now (probably prefer em over Les Pauls at the minute :o) and love that white/single p90 Jr look :)
Can see myself being tempted into selling one of my LPs and buying something like that if any come up!
-

Yup...

Nice Guitar!
-
That's so cool 8) My finger's hovered over the buy-it-now button on the cherry version in Richtone's ebay site a few time. I'm trying to justify it as I have no SG and nothing with P90s... 2 for 1
This clip was on the beeb a few days ago and didn't help cure the GAS,

My usual question, what's the neck thickness like. IIRC, Tokai use an in-between, medium size?

Initial impression was that it's pretty chunky, like my Tokai SG-155. Definitely heftier than the Gibson '61 Reissues, about the same sort of size as a Standard, I'd say (although the necks on the various Standards and Specials I've owned did vary a bit!).
-
That is a seriously nice guitar.
Time to start a punk band or seomething, Phil.
Although I think that's not your cup o' tea but it's the perfect guitar for the job.
-
Ah! Excellent, it won't be me first to succumb this year, then...
I'm intending not to buy any, but there is danger of two possibles (which I am suppressing all thought of, even as we speak...)
Looks cute (though I'm not a huge fan of white guitars), and a single P90 beast sounds like a very useful weapon to have...
Hope it checks out ok after its bash.
-
Speaking of; what happened to roo?
Oh, HNGD
I've got him on my steam friends list if you want me to send him a message, he's pretty busy most days
was talking to him last night and he still has the original strings on the roocaster

Thanks, but you're right, no punk band for me! :D It would look cool with a sticker or two, but I'm probably a bit too conservative for that.
I actually love the lead tone from these single P-90 guitars - I think of them as Leslie West guitars, although he never had an SG as far as I know (he did put a dogear in a V, though!).
-
That guitar just looks overly nice. White SGs really rock and the dog ear really adds some mojo. Strap it on next time you're going out, Philly, and you'll be the stud of the night
-
That Tokai is sexy, might have to convert my Epi so single humbucker spec with a big scratchplate!
Paddy
-
Very nice. I will be intrested to here how you get on with this one. Enjoy!

haha, no worries. Good luck with the electronics, and fingers crossed the wood's ok :)
-
OK, I took it all apart this morning and nothing is damaged except the knobs. :good:
Nice workmanship! There's a full-width tenon which extends 5cm past the end of the neck into the body so hopefully it'll be a bit stronger than the typical SG neck joint. Shielded control cavity too. :)
Now to start thinking about pimping it.....
-
New knobs, a nice P90 and a nice tone cap. That should be all you need!
The pots are usually pretty good :)

That's an interesting point, I usually replace the pots automatically but I should give these a chance before leaping to buy CTS. The wiring is very neat, at least!
It's also getting an aluminium bridge, I'm not crazy about the zinc lightning-bar one (with wound G compensation).
-
Where did you get it from, Philly? Just a 2nd hand ebay job? I'm already planning my next SG after seeing this, I want the same one

Yep Tom, mine is secondhand from eBay, but the guy only bought it a few weeks ago. And this is where he bought it:
