OK, I'm probably mental for even considering this, but does anyone know of any VOS spec Pearly Gates LPs left anywhere? A quick Google has found me:
* Coda Music
* Andertons Music
I know Guitar Village has a signed/aged at £14k, but no VOS ones.
Does anyone know of any more anywhere in the UK???
-
No, you're not mad for considering it, it's a stunning guitar. I also think that at £ 5.5k the one in Coda may be a good investment if Gibson is in the trouble that rumours will have us believe. I was looking at the Coda one for a while but bottled it and bought a used 59 reissue iced tea burst instead this morning. It is horny, and I can't get the same tone from any other guitar so I consider it money well spent.

-
I'll keep an eye out for one. You're not nuts though - if you want one then get one is what I say. If Gibson do go under you may never get another chance at a decent price (provided you find one of course)
-
I feel lied to :(
You said you wouldn't get one this year.
You said it last night...
-
Ha ha - I know, Matt! I do truly want to stick to my guns!
It's just Pearly - I love that guitar. Just seeing what the options out there are before it's too late...
-
Go for it Dave - it's a great guitar. Was flicking through Rock n roll gearhead last night and as usual stopped on the Pearly Gates page for a while (and the La Grange strat)
-
But she aint Pearly.
It would be like the Ferrari 365 'Daytona' Spyder in Miami Vice, it may have looked like a Ferrari but it in fact was a Corvette based kit car replica. It may look like the real thing but deep down you know it's not.
Again I'll say bagsy the red Tele.
-
Ok, I've tracked down another one. Seriously considering selling my motorbike to buy this:
-
That is awesome Dave. I would sell a motorbike in a heartbeat for that*
*I'm not a fan of motorbikes.
-
Easy choice for you then mate!
That one is particularly good looking - the other two I found (at Coda and Andertons) aren't as pretty......
-
:D
There will always be other bikes :P. How many PGs are likely to come up in future at a reasonable price? It is very pretty as well. No pressure then
-
I'd sell Dave's bike for that...
Seriously though, it is just a very nice Les Paul with some investment potential... IT'S NOT Pearly.
But I say if you want it buy it... and pay cash don't dream of borrowing on credit to buy it.
-
I'm sure with his new found luthier skills Afghan can knock you one out in no time at all.
And being sensible I agree with the cash not credit comment.
-
I can knock one out at the drop of a hat and do often... :P
My point is if you get into a type of "feeding frenzy"
"Could Gibson go under? --- >So this could be my last chance--- >Oh can I find one?---->That was hard, everybody must be buying these up----- I better get it NOW & sell my bike later!"
Where's my credit card?
Sit back, take a breath and sell that bike first. :?
-
I think you're crazy... but it's your money!
-
Get it, if you have the cash (IMO) there is no down side :)
-
You should join the Les Paul forum and ask over there - on that board there are dealers who specialise in this kind of thing with very good reps for cherry picking the good ones.
-
I think you're crazy... but it's your money!
Agreed in full.
-
Buy it I say. You only live once!
-
Any update Dave?
-
Any update Dave?
He bought it, the missus found out, he's in casualty...
btw - I agree with everything said so far.
You are crazy, but no more than anyone else...
I started wondering about the "Gibson going down rumours" and thinking "what should I get??". Then I sat there looking at my Explorer and SG Special Faded, and realised I hadn't been hankering after anything before I heard this, so for me, it's really "so what?"...
But if there is something you actually want, and it might get harder to buy one... hmmm...
If you got the cash, go for it...
-
My interest in this guitar is nothing to do with the "Gibson are knackered" rumours. It's purely the Pearly Gates/Billy Gibbons thing. I wouldn't go out and buy any old R9 - it's a Pearly or nothing.
A decision has been made.
I'm currently in a teleconference at work, but once it finishes I'll be making a call to leave a deposit on the one below. It weighs 8.4lbs and is apparently stunning in the flesh:

Get in! That's what I like to hear.

I'm breaking the New Year's resolution nice and early, just like Philly Q
Bit of an exceptional case though, this one.......

Of course. Resolutions are there to be broken.

Best to break 'em early, less guilt.
It's costing you about 10 times as much, though!
-
If youre gonna break it, utterly $%&#ing destroy it, I say.
(I still think youre mental though ;))
-

(I still think youre mental though ;))
Might as well. Would be a shame to break one for a measly amount of money!!
-
Done! Deposit left!
OMG! What have I done? :o
-
Woohoo!! Hope you don't get buyers remorse!
-
Very unlikely. As a huge BG and ZZ Top fan, this is one of those things I just HAD to buy. I've been trying to make my mind up for 3 months - it's taken that long to decide to do it.
I think it's the nicest looking one that's hit the UK. All the other ones I've seen have had very average tops, although they sold so quick it's been hard to keep up...
-
Sounds good then - if you've done that much thinking buyers remorse should be non existant!
-
What about you not getting on with single-cutaway guitars? Or have the Teles banished that?
-
Teles have kinda banished that, plus I'll live with it for this guitar ;) Like I said, I wouldn't normally buy a Les Paul but I HAD to have this one.
I'm keen to explore the pickup mixing options you get with LPs again, as all my guitars (except my Epi SG) have master volume/tone now.
-
If it gives you extra 'Mojo' and you are in a position to buy it then do it.
If you can. Why not.
Please, please, please can me and Shobet come round to meet her?
We will bring his Matchless that he's not going to buy tomorrow to play her on.
-
No problem with you having a go, but Huw's radioactive monkey hands might be a bit too much ;)
Enjoy World Guitars, make sure you buy something nice. I've just set the benchmark....
-
Congrats Dave, now all you need is the beard.
-
If my experience of splashing out on a highly expensive Les Paul is anything to go by, the will be no buyer's remorse, only symptoms arising from w*nking yourself daft.
-
Congrats, I'm sure it'll be amazing!!
However I wonder what they were smooking when they did that bookmatching
-
It's just the grain I think - same log, split down the middle, and carved away to make an LP top. Lots of them vary hugely if the grain/flame runs at an angle :)
-
Well you have done it in style. I look forward to hearing what you make of it when you get your hands on it Dave.
-
It'll be a couple of weeks until I get it, as I have to sort out the cash required! I've given a 10% deposit so it isn't going anywhere until I pick it up :)
There's several people wanting to know what it's like when I get it, and of course I'll let you guys know.
It's gonna be a long few weeks, but sorting out my motorbike ready for sale should pass the time...
-
I reckon you've got yourself a keeper there Dave. Although I'm not an LP man that has whetted my appetite somewhat. Clips etc would be good when you get it.
-
No problem! A full review will follow...
-
Hmmm..... I think you may be lucky... If you were a Jeff Beck fan like me (apologies to you and Martin for mentioning that name again  ) you could have paid £8,000 for his Esquire reissue or maybe £10,000 for a Clapton Crossroads 335.. so £5.5k for a BG Pearly seems a snip :D
Looks great - hope it sounds as good and does n't suffer from the unpredictability of Gibson QC!!!
-
Guys - you are being FAR to nice to Dave - there are no where near enough references to "I've had it with GAS now" - "I've got all the guitars I will ever need..." Come on - stick it to him!!!
-
Those who know me well know that this was just too hard to resist!
-
Great news Dave.
Have you ever played one or are you buying blind?
I'm sure it will be a dream come true.
-
I'm sort of buying blind, but I will be playing it before I hand over the balance in a few weeks.
And yep, I know I'm mental. GAS is a terrible disease.
-
And yep, I know I'm mental. GAS is a terrible disease.
This is what I tell Jane (the GAS bit, not that you're mental). She just doesn't understand the wants and needs of guitar players. She has heard me say - this is the last guitar I'll buy for a year so many times. Whenever I feel the urge of wanting another guitar I do spend a bit of time thinking of how to approach Jane with the news. Very sad.
-
Congrats! I want LOTS of pics! I love the Pearly Gates!
-
Motorbikes are overrated.
A guitar of this quality might stay with you and your children / grand children for generations to come.
And one ingenious riff on it could make you rich and famous, now try that with a motorbike.

If you have a classic motorbike you can pass it down through your family.
you could do a cunning stunt on it and get rich and famous! probably just as likely as getting rich and famous writing a riff... maybe??

I think it's more likely you'd break your neck doing that stunt which would result in your children and grand children never to be born :?

hahaha. True. :)

 There's absolutely no point... we knows, he knows...
Nice one Dave - it does indeed look peachy :D
When it arrives, I'll be very interested to know what you manage to play on it for first few weeks. Are you gonna be stuck trying to get away from Billy Gibbons riffs/licks like I have Brian May riffs/licks?
It's a little bit different than the situation I've been in the last few weeks, because although it's a "Pearly", it's basically an LP, whereas mine is "Red Special" that doesn't quite play like anything else I've ever owned. It immediately unlocked all the Queen stuff I've absent-mindedly fiddled with over the last 30 years... and it's taken me 4 weeks to start playing anything other than Brian May on it!! I've even discovered that sixpences work rather well for me on this one, where they don't on other guitars (I started trying them in 79 or 80 and gave up quite quickly).
Anyway, hope the wait isn't too long, and that it exceeds expectations :D :D
-
The wait is too long already :(
-

I though Twinfan said he wasn't going to have kids?
So I guess it'll just get left to the local cat's home instead ;)
-
Exactly right mate, that's where it'll end up!
I'm sure when I'm old and grey there'll be some kid or relative who'll take it off me ;)

Most Beautiful thing!!! Thrilling !
-
It does look nice Dave. The tones BG gets with the original are something else. Deguello is my fav' album. Such a subtle tone, i'm sure with your amp it will get as close as it can. Are you keeping the pups in? What are they?
3 months of going over it in your mind is how these things go isn't it! Nice one, I hope it does the business for you!
-
I've joined this one a bit late Dave ; but it sounds like a great idea. Life is indeed ( relatively ) short - and it's certainly not going to drive you into penury. A delicious find ; not only as a genuine investment piece - but as a thing of lasting ( and even improving ) beauty . You've worked hard to secure the skills / job that fund this scheme - and ( as my old college lecturer used to say ) - " All work and no play , makes Jack a dull boy ". Even I would get a good specimen of the Gibson L5 Custom models if life circumstances allowed. Enjoy . :)
-
Are you keeping the pups in? What are they?
That's is one dumb ass question JMac, SD Pearly Gates!... You muppet!
-
They're SD Custom Shop Pearly Gates pickups. Not the regular off the production line versions. By all accounts they're superb, and I believe they will be. I've got a cuople of other SD CS pickups and they're fantastic. I know a pickup winder who says if they didn't wind their own pickups, they'd buy SD CS pickups. Says a lot, I think!
I popped into the bank today to check my new credit card application was in progress, and manged to skip one of the steps that required posting out documents. I should get the card in about a week, so that's helped me speed up getting Pearly :D
I was going to go down to Stevenage to pick it up, but given it's a day in the car and £70+ in petrol I think I'll get it sent to me instead. In which case, I should have it in about 10 days.
(And for the finance concerned folks, it's a 0% for 12 months card which will be cleared and cancelled once my bike is sold. I'll wait a month or so until the weather picks up and I'll get a top price for it ;) )
-
A couple of things in that last post could worry me.. new card/wait till summer to sell... Mmm
But I have faith in you Dave.
BTW Stevenage is just up the road for me so I could pick it up for you and give it a tune up & stretch the strings so it's ready for when you need it. :P :P

I live closer than you Dave. I'M GETTING IT!!!!  I'l put the fur pimp coat on if I have to!
Yeah I take your point about what pups it has. I hadn't read the spec on it
-
If Johnny turns up at Coda wearing his fur "pimp coat" and can of Special Brew..
All bets are off.
forget your deposit...
They'll give him the Pearly Gates & run.
-
It won't be summer when the bike sells mate - March, as Spring begins, is prime time :D

Are you selling your Ducati? It should sell even though economy is still suffering, I mean not everyone is skint are they!

-
Yeah, the Ducati will sell Johnny. It's a model that's sought after, and the prices are holding well, so demand is still there ;)

Good idea. I love bikes but I got them out of my system after working on them for 10 years. There are so many bad drivers now, so quit while your ahead, that's what I say!
-
^ my thoughts exactly. Mrs Twinfan has a licence too, but no bike at the minute, so she was very encouraging for me to do the deal. She's a big Rev fan too, so she was no help whatsoever in helping me not buy it!
-
I also be watching for a good deal in the near future on the remaining McCarty.....
;-)
-
Dave will have an unlucky number of guitars when he gets the pearly
I think he should sell his red tele to help finance it.
-
So many people want the red Tele! You, Huw, Martin...
As if anyone would want this old thing???
(Oh and Mike, the Korina McCarty ain't goin' nowhere. I love that guitar, and with a one-piece body it's pretty darn rare....)
-
I also want that red Tele. Perhaps you should raffle it off

Ooooh ME, ME, ME, ME!
-
Not a chance! It's a complete keeper.
There's an outside chance that I can get this Pearly by Saturday, in which case it could make it out for a gig...

You're gigging it? I'm quite surprised about that - do you gig the ME?
Is your tele ash or alder?
-
Yep, the ME goes out from time to time. Awful pic, but you can see the ME on the stand behind me...

Red Tele is Swamp Ash...
-
Cheers mate. Hop you get Pearly in time for the gig!

If I don't, I've got one next month it'll make it for ;)

She's a diamond, that Mrs Twinfan. No hiding guitars in the garage and intercepting the post when the credit card bill's due for our Dave.
-
Is that fire extinguisher there JUST for your amps?
:-)
-
Nah, it's for Martin "Lightning Fingers" Whelan on the other side of the stage..........
-
There's an outside chance that I can get this Pearly by Saturday, in which case it could make it out for a gig...
Dave, you're a much, much braver man than me to gig something like that. Congratulations though, it looks great and hopefully sounds even better. Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on it when you take delivery. :)
-
Congrats TF! It looks awesome!
On a bad note, you've given me major LP Gas now!
-
Looks like it won't arrive for Saturday's gig as I've decided to pick it up in person.
Road trip for me and Martin in a week or so I think...
-
i've arrived very late to this! congrats Dave, STUNNING guitar. i think this is the most excited i remember you being on here about a guitar, and considering some of the axes you've gone through over the last couple of years, that's really saying something!
yep, it's nearly as nice as the little Squire tele you used to have ;)
if you ever get sick of the Les Paul, it's welcome to come and keep the tele company
-
I'm pretty darn sure that "Francince" (for it is her name) won't be going anywhere!
I seem to be going through a "loving humbuckers" phase at the moment :D
-
Bored of waiting now :(

Never seen you so worked up! You'll be tearing your hair out by next week!
-
I've got plenty to tear out at the moment! Work is being a pain in the arse as well, so it's just cr@p all round at the moment!
At least I've got two gigs this weekend to let off some steam!

Yep, I had a bad day at work yesterday. I let off loads of steam by going for a run. I must have been angry as I recorded my second best time ever on the coruse I do (and I'm a stone heavier than when I set the record!)
Looking forward to pics and a review of Francine when she turns up!
-
Why Francine?
Wouldn't "Nearly Gates" be more in keeping with her actual heritage.

Alright Dave nice plank bro...........so youre ditching the angus gear for beard and rigger boots...........I can only imagine what it will sound like through martamp. Got to be another Manchester get together so I can get my mits on it. ENJOY

Got to be another Manchester get together
That sounds like a plan!
Dave - when you get it you've got to grab that slab, plug that sucker in and grind me a pound. And, of course, make yo'se'f happy.

Yeah, in for a penny, in for a pound!

Christ, I can't afford to actually BUY anything else!!! :o
I want to check out the VOS SGs, and Martin wants to check out the Byrdlands to see if he could be the next Ted Nugent ;)

Which shop is it, by the way? I lost track somewhere in the thread.
-
Martin wants to check out the Byrdlands to see if he could be the next Ted Nugent ;)
make sure he brings his loincloth! :)
-
All this talk about LPs is making me want an LP (again). Maybe I should be a decent budget one and see how I get on - I couldn't justify spending thousands on a HB'd guitar!
-
It's a Coda, Philly :)
-
It's a Coda, Philly :)
Luton or Stevenage? Neither's the most scenic location for a day out, but at least it's in the old part of Stevenage (if I remember right). :)
-
Yep, it's Stevenage. Funnily enough, I bought my Les Paul Standard from there about 13 years ago!
-
Ian - have a lovely Orville Les Paul for sale and only just down the road too.....

Twinfan, VOS SGs are great, probably a bit overpriced when compared to a VOS LP, but really good to play, and weigh next to nothing.
Here's my pair of VOS's.

The Pearly Gates replicas are a 2009 R9 with:
* Seymour Duncan Custom Shop Pearly Gates pickups
* An exact copy of the original guitar's neck profile
* Limited edition serial number and case
* Tops specifically selected by Billy Gibbons (not sure how closely though, but most do look like Pearly)
* Weights closely monitored (they seem to be between 8.5 and 9.5lbs)
* Burst colour and spray shape closely matches the original
Not a lot I guess - you either "get it" and want a Pearly, or you don't :)
-

Great
Still waiting for the credit card, so unless it turns up tomorrow it'll be a week on Monday until we make the trip South.

i hope the graupel doesnt delay your aquisition of pearly
seriously - are we becoming eskimo's, do we need more words for snow!!!

I've got a 4hr drive each way to pick it up!
Ouch that is a lot. Take breaks, it's better in the end.
Missus coming with you or will it be just you?
So if there is snow, make sure:
1. Your tank is full (in case you have to stop and stay in the car overnight)
2. You have enough water and ideally some tea in a can
3. Mobile is charged
4. To wear some wooly knickers LOL
Good luck with it mate, I'm sure the guitar is gonna be worth it and I do envy you for getting one, but I am not focussed on the LPs so much at the moment.
After my experience with a Tylerbaster last week, I am now fully infected by the Telecaster bug. I need a great and ballsy RW Tele very badly. James wouldn't build me a Tylerbuster as he stopped them and is committed on his Mongoose design now, a real bummer cause that guitar got to me very bad. In fact it was in my >20 years of playing the best ever guitar I got my hands on. We kept it on vid and I think you can see me really fall for it after about 6:00 on this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q_OBJOAsI8w
Maybe another Alder/RW Tele with Suhr Pickups would do the same trick for me.

OK, I'm sorry, but I've gotta beat Afghan to this....
Wasn't it a bit distracting when your big buddy kept leaning over and twisting your knob while you were playing? :|

We must have been watching at the same time Philly. That's exactly what I was thinking!

Haha, he could have touched all kinds of buttons and I wouldn't even have realised - I was just so blown away by that Tyler

Snow's turned up - bugger! Won't stop me making the trip though, hopefully!

That sounds like a GREAT Les Paul ... can't wait to hear yours! Buckle up!
-
Really bright and crispy isn't it? None of this dull fatness you get with lots of them.

That's what I thought and that's how I like my LPs. You can always fatten up a crisp tone, but will be trying hard getting a crisp tone if the guitar is dull.
I'm sure it's gonna be great through your Martamps!
-
* Pearly 240
* Expandora
* Martamp M45 and 2x12 with Greenbacks
Should sound nice ;)
-
That is a great clip. Sounds to me like a Les Paul should. That is a hat and a half too.
-
I'm not sure Dave is going to make it through the night.
-
 late in here Dave, congrats to you! It does look real nice, I look forward to the pics mate.
-
Martin's just bailed on me as he needs to finish an amp for a customer, so it's a long solo drive in the car tomorrow!
Might have to make an early start ;)
-
Take lots of ZZ Top and the time will fly by. The worst bit is the drive back - you'll have the guitar with you but won't able to play it. Or even look at it.
-
Decided as I'm going on my own that I'm going on the train.
ZZ Top on shuffle play on the Walkman, plus Motley Crue's "The Dirt" to read. Time should fly by...

Excellent book! :) You're gonna have a great day.

A great book indeed. I first read it when invigilating an exam. I had to work really hard to stifle my laughter after reading the opening few lines about moosehead.
Neil Strauss's writing style is very easy to follow and leads to a very quick read.

I have very little interest in the Crue, but I have read the book. It's alright.

That beard is in serious danger of muting the strings...
-
Is he there yet?
-
Been there, got back, just waiting for the guitar to warm up after a walk back from the train station in the snow. Don't want cracked lacquer just yet, maybe in the future though...
-
C'mon you bugger, pictures and a youtube vid or we'll come round and nick it!
-
It's freaking gorgeous in the flesh - pics don't do it justice :o
Oh, and some guy turned it down because it was too flamey - I kid you not!
-
Looking forward to that vid!
-
Amazing!
How are your heart rate and adrenalin levels? :P
-
Better now I'm back home! Had visions of leaving it on the train or getting mugged before it's insured!!!
-
Get off the fourm and get playing Dave!
Unless you don't like it
-
Had a quick noodle - it's lovely :D As good as the Modern Eagle - no better, no worse, just a bit different.
This is a VERY good sign.
Just grabbing a strap......
-
Chop chop!
-
I'm finger tapping now............
-
I am also waiting Dave and don't forget what Fernando will be saying-you know the drill.
-
What a c--k tease. I don't even like Les Pauls, never mind ZZ Top and I'm still frothing to see this bad boy. Get it out Dave! And show us photos!
-
I can hear the tune to 'Countdown'.
What does it sound like?
-
I can hear the tune to 'Countdown'.
Are you sure? I'm don't think that's the first thing I'd play on it...
