Title: NGD PRS
Post by: marantz1300 on January 27, 2010, 08:20:29 PM
I got this a few days ago.I had a couple of days off and have been playing the arse off it. First impressions,its light and bright, pretty versatile,i lke the coil split. I'm not big on the bird inlays,they're a bit gay. too flash.I'll see if it stands the test of time,although I do like playing it. At the moment i prefer the Hamer.                   (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/prscase.jpg)                      (http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii98/marantz1300/hamerprstele.jpg)

Very nice!  Custom 22, I assume?

I've owned several Hamers over the years, but haven't tried any recent ones.  I think they're just as well built as PRS - in fact attention to detail is probably a bit better - but PRS are a little more comfortable to play, IMO.

I wish Hamers were more readily available in the UK.

Yes it's a Custom 22.The Hamer is a 93 Fm Special from Camf of this forum.I am very happy with it and feel more comfortable with it.The tone and the neck are great,it's a very solid guitar.

The Hamer is a 93 Fm Special from Camf of this forum.

I thought it looked familiar, the blue/gold combination is quite unusual.  :)

I have a couple, but not maple-tops.  My Mira has Cold Sweats (or would have, if I could ever get round to wiring it up.. :?).  My McCarty Korina has the original PRS pickups, but I'm tempted to try Abraxas or Emeralds - more because I'm interested in those pickups than thinking they'll necessarily suit the guitar.

It's quite often been mentioned on the forum that VHIIs work well in PRS guitars, but I reckon you have a very wide choice - mahogany, maple, rosewood and a hardtail bridge, it must have a pretty balanced natural tone.

I have several PRS's all with BK's.  I have an Artist II (22 fret) with AIV Mules (I had VHII's on it for a while but prefer the mules on this guitar).  My Standard has Rebel Yell's which are awesome pickups on that guitar.  I have an EG4 with an H/S/S set of a Crawler/P91/P91.  Lastly I have 2 PRS clones, one is a semi-hollow and has AII Mules, the other is a Warmoth and has a bolt on rosewood neck with a Miracle Man set.  Depending on what you are playing, I would go with the VHII's or Mules on that guitar for a classic sound, or Rebel Yells for something with more drive.

Hurrah for PRS!

I had a hardtail Cu22 Artist Pack, with PRS RP pickups. Yeah, not BKP and not sure of the equivalents, but they sounded pretty awesome in that guitar.

Got Cold Sweats in my CuRo24. Way better then the HFS/VB. Same vibe, just... better!

That's a nice burst!

I have a PRS McCarty, similar woods to your guitar, but the mahogany body is thicker. It's light and warm. I put Cold Sweats in it and haven't looked back. The stock McCarty pickups didn't work for me in that guitar..

If you're gonna replace the pickups on that one, I think there would be many to choose from; it's a pretty versatile starting point. I would probably be tempted to try some Emeralds on that one, but that's just an idea  8)

I have a McCarty with a solid RW neck. Got a VHII bridge and RY neck in it now and it works very well!

I've got two PRSi - a Modern Eagle and a Korina McCarty.

The Modern Eagle is stock, with its RP pickups.  Superb sounding guitar, and I have a set of RPs on their way to me for my Warmoth Tele Thinline.

The Korina McCarty has some non-BKP PAF replicas in it, although the stock pickups were pretty nice in that guitar to be honest.

I had a hardtail Cu22 Artist Pack, with PRS RP pickups. Yeah, not BKP and not sure of the equivalents, but they sounded pretty awesome in that guitar.

RPs are hot-ish PAF style pickups.  Closest equivalent would probably be Black Dogs.

It's quite often been mentioned on the forum that VHIIs work well in PRS guitars...

I'd be careful.  I had them in a McCarty Rosewood and they were super bright, almost like a Tele.  They have very offset coils, making them sound more single coil-like.

I have a Custom 22 Trem with Master Volume and Tone, 3 way switch, coil tap on neck pickup only and a pair of BKP Abraxas.

[/quote]                                                               I'll avoid them then,Its pretty bright sounding already. It sounda good,maybe the hamer is spoiling me,I like the more vintage feel and tone.

If you want a vintage-y tone, go for a PAF type:

* Stormy Mondays
* PG Blues
* Mules
* Black Dogs
