Title: Mass Effect 2
Post by: Nadz1lla on January 28, 2010, 10:14:45 AM
Just came through my door! Installing now. Anyone else been looking forward to this? I'm hoping they've improved the little side missions e.g NOT going to the same identical little outpost and killing almost identical baddies over and over again. I think that's one of the few things that let the first one down.

didn't really see the appeal of mass effect to be honest, but then I'm not much of an RPG type person, but bioshock 2 is out next month!!! :D

I stayed away from the first one, despite it appealing to me quite greatly, because of the DRM. I dont like being treated like a thief when I've bought something.

Has the situation there improved?

Yeah I was completely unaware of the DRM until I had installed it, d'oh! They fixed it though, this time around they just do a simple disc verification and away you go.

Having said that, I've not noticed any badness from the DRM from ME1, I can still use my virtual drives etc and watch all the South park I grabbed from my friend's HDD.... *waits for a Ninja to assassinate me....*

Oh, good. I'll get it if its just a disk check.

Aye...well that's what I've been reading everywhere anyway, if it sneakily installed any of that cr@p then I'm completely unaware of it and they have probably silenced lots of people to keep it a secret, but so far, nobody has found any DRM stuff. If you want to be sure though, I'd do a bit of research just in case. But I believe they learned their lesson from the first one where people voted with their feet.

Incidentally, anyone who has the first one, make sure you're not half-way through a replay if you want to import your ME1 character to ME2, because it won't recognise that you've completed it. Thankfully I have a savegame pretty close to the end, I'm going to see if re-completing it will give me the import option and will report back accordingly.

one of the new tricks instead of DRM seems to be making people use a net connection to save games do a cloud type system, be interesting to see how fans of copyright infringement get round that one

some game out soon only uses DRM if you want to play it without the disc in the drive

on the DRM, again- Sins of a Solar Empire is

A: The best game I've played in a long time. Maybe ever.

B: Completely DRM-less. You dont even need the activation code or the disk in the drive to play. You use the activation code register the game on Impulse (which is like steam but much better, as it doesnt have to be active to play the games you got through it) and be able to update it. Illegal copy = no updates or patches. Legal copy = you own the game you bought and can do what  you want with it, and its fully supported by the devs thereafter.

Thats the way to do it.

All these little tricks that are supposed to make the game harder to crack, or limit resales or loans to friends and what have you, or that you need to be logged on to play and save games or whatever, I have no truck with any of them.

I've been totally put off the notion of Bioshock 2 by the sheer weight of DRM nonsense.

Yeah, Bioshock was another I would have bought were it not for the DRM.

I'm not that far on yet, but that's only due to real life getting in the way. It's tempting to quit my job to get more time for these things. Maybe then I could give Mass Effect 2 a try as well!
