Title: Pickups for 8 string schecter
Post by: Keven on January 29, 2010, 08:47:26 PM
Hello!

now, tax returns are coming soon, so is the 8 string guitar, my choice is made though. the guitar will be these swank schecter blackjack atx 8 strings. mahogany neck and body. ebony fretboard. i already have a black dog and mule set in my other extended range guitar and love it to death, though it's ash body and maple neck.

i emailed tim about 2 months ago for this, i'm mainly looking for something that holds the same kind of ground in this guitar as the BD7 and Mule7 in my other. he recommended riff raff's. i applaud the idea, but i'd like to hear from the users. i like to work on a guitar to make it sound good, higher action and big strings, so it all fits in for the riff raff, but if i wanted something hotter, should i go with VHII ?or VHII bridge and Riff Raff neck? that could be a very nice combo.

but i'm worried with all that mahogany. will alnico sound too muddy? i do need tightness as this guitar will be tuned F Bb Eb Ab Gb Db Bb Eb (a half tone down). i tuned down to drop Ab in my sample i posted on the forum and that's tight enough for me ( http://bareknucklepickups.co.uk/forum/index.php?topic=20065.0 ) and this is pretty much the basic feel and tone i want to maintain. so i may also be looking at a cold sweat kind of contraption :D

help!

Okay, i understand alot of you aren't too familiar with 8 strings, but my real question is, after a weekend of though, is the riff raff just about the same type of pickup as the black dog, as in, same dynamic and reactivity, but a tad brighter to compensate for the mahoghany body and neck? also, cold sweat seems to be a popular choice to tame low ended bodies. assuming my taste in pickup output lies right into the black dog vicinity, would the cold sweat be too hot (that can be fixed with some pickup height adjustment though) for my tastes?

is it a hopeless quest to find a pickup that will handle real subsonic tunings (IE, the first fret of the low e string of a regular bass..)  but with in the vintage range?

the guitar isn't here yet so i'm waiting to see what kind of piece of wood i'll end up with, i have seen some les pauls that were quite bright compared to others, and i kinda expect this guitar to have a lespaul-ish type of tone. with all that mahogany.

EDIT: listening to hunter's riff raff clips really helped me pinpoint what i liked about my black dog, it loose when you attack the strings loosedly, but really tightens up when you snap the strings real hard..

second edit: well. after much intensive clip listening, i can see why tim is the man. riff raffs sound like the perfect choice. much thanks to hunter for his awesome samples.

i'll be back with my own clips once i get the guitar and the pickups :D
