Post by: sgmypod on February 01, 2010, 04:53:51 PM
Have a 50w valve amp el34 based will do crunch...but not much higher gain, for stuff like you could be mine what pedal would people recommend.

Marshall Guv'nor or Tonerider British Distortion or MI Audio Crunch Box...

you got all of the above

No longer got the Crunch Box, still got the other two.  Guv'nor is more gritty, Tonerider is very similar to the Crunch Box, if not identical.  A bit smoother.

which has best bass end

Neither - lots of gain and lots of bass = super flabbiness.

reword this...don't like over thin, over top treble sounding pedals...

Crunch Box or British Distortion would probably suit you better then!

Going for GnR you will have to do without a lot of bottom end/lower mids. That tone is all about upper mid crunch.

OCD would be great into a dirty amp, but it's not that cheap.

MXR - 10 band EQ put in the loop?

MI Audio Crunchbox for sure - owned one and it did that kind of thing great.

Or, you could simply use a SD-1 into your Laney GH50L - that should get you there.  An MXR 6-band EQ would be a cool way to get that tone too.

I could swear I remember him going on about MXR Distortion+ in an interview I read somewhere. Also try an older RAT pedal.

I'd avoid anything Tube Screamer derived as I don't think that will give you the sound.

I think you'll generally struggle unless you've got a big Marshall running at a very loud volume.

Where you at bud? My mate has my Crunchbox at the minute, if he's finished with (he's trying it out too to see if he likes it) you're welcome to try it? I'm not selling it mind, I really like it. I'm in the midlands. Let me know.

Yeah mine neither, it's okay for lower gain classic stuff but it isn't focused enough for GNR tones.

I like the OCD but I'm not sure if it's a keeper yet...

Try out the Dano Coolcat Distortion - Its a cheap, crunchbox clone that is surprisingly good.

Isn't the coolcat an OCD clone? Supposed to be a great pedal though all the same.

The 'Drive' is an OCD clone but the Distortion is a Crunchbox clone.

 8) Thanks, I didn't realise that, I'll point my mate in the direction of the distortion then as he's hanging on to my Crunchbox at the minute.

I never heard of Rothwell before but that sounds excellent.

I'm a big fan of the Emma Electronics Reezafratzitz. I think it'll be able to deliever some GNR high gain distortion and apart from that it's very versatile. It's a must hear (and own!).

Emma also makes a cool overdrive called Stink Bug which might work as well combined with some gain from your amp.

Here's what Emma lists as UK dealers at there homepage.

If you haven't heard any clips of the Reezafratzitz yet find some at youtube and see how you like the pedal.

Don't think will get to try the emma ones all a bit far away..looked up clips,  I like the emma one, mi crunchbox, the Rothwell and weirdly the cheep tonerider

If you like the tonerider it's a sure by me thinks. The cheapest of the lot, as far as I know.

I just listened to the Tonerider clips. Not bad at all.

My BOR clone beats it on low gain but the medium and high gain sound pretty good.

Do note that they used delay in the high gain clips. That makes it sound bigger than it really is.

Noted..like BOR but just a little flubby for what I want
