Title: Does anyone know the pot ratings that ibanez use with their stock actives?
Post by: Transcend on February 06, 2010, 12:46:36 PM
I was just thinking about what i dont like about the nailbomb in my rga42fm then realised i never changed the pots out and that this could be affecting the sound.

Do ibanez use 25k pots for there actives like emg?

if so would this make the sound boxy and lacking in definition?

also ive just called the local music store which to be honest is a bit cr@p but its the only one without having to spend 1hour+ on a bus.

and they say they have 500k pots for £2.99

i have never replaced pots before other than to the ones that come with emgs.

so is there anything in particular i should look for?

Also if theyre cheap rubbish would maplin sell any decent ones as i have a local maplin.

for £2.99 they're probably Alpha pots, the same as in your Agile. Axesrus has CTS ones for £4

Does your RG have  9v battery or 2x AA's?
I believe the 9v are 25k pots ala EMG and the 2xAA's are 500k.
I had the 2xAA in my Ibanez Art horrible pickups but a pair of P90's have given the guitar a life it never had with the stock pickups.

TBH  I swapped the Pots anyway to be safe as I had some CTS pots in the house.

If you had 25K ohm pots then yes it will sound flat and boxy compared to 500k pots

I would upgrade them anyway - get some CTS in there

the pot was 25k and it was the 2xaa batteries lz3 pickups or something.

got a 500k but i didnt thing about shaft length so its too short i cant be bothered going out again so im just gonna order some cts ones

also it has a active eq which ive removed would it be hard to add a tone pot?

I just put the 500k one in and yes it was an alpha pot.

despite the shorter shaft as its just temp and
WOW i thought i needed a higher output pup earlier as i was having to have the gain on 4-5 but i had to knock it down to 2.5 this thing is killer.

thanks guys

to anyone doubting quality pots make a difference. here's the proof. :D

your tone is only as good as your weakest link.

Long shaft ones are for Gibson Les Pauls. Short shaft should be just right in an Ibby  :?

i thought that but it doesn't fit. i guess it could be because its an archtop rather than the standard flat top ibz

Ibanez work great with Alpha 500k but if you really want CTS you will need to bore out the hole a little wider... use a file or some sand paper rolled in a tube.

I stick with Alpha unless I want to use a 1meg pot to open up the tone a little.

Fun day, haha, took me ages, but so worth it. I've replaced all the electronics by now (all 4 pots and the toggle switch).
Definitely worth it though.
