Title: marathon tour of germany
Post by: gwEm on February 07, 2010, 09:50:43 PM
9 dates in 9 days - could be a heavy schedule.

obviously, i love germany and i'm very excited, though the most I've played on the trot was three nights, which to be honest was a bit too much. any ideas how to handle the pressure of the road? how can i keep it fresh each night?

the other question is flying V, strat or steinberger? ;) ;)

If you have time to spare in Augsburg, do yourself a favour and go and have a beer and some food in the König von Flandern (http://www.koenigvonflandern.de/shop/shop_content.php?coID=0).

I think the club may have been called the Kerosin Club before changing to what it's called now. You're also not going to be too far from one of my favourite whisky shops, the No.7 on Steingasse.

You come to my Land, the land of the Schenker brothers (Scorpions), Kai Hansen (Helloween, Gamma Ray) and Wolf Hoffmann (Accept), you HAVE to play the Flying V^^

But the Steinberger would be more portable than a big ol' V case.  :P

Hope all goes well!  :D

true, but on the strat side how could we forget Uli Jon Roth, Mattias Jabs, and I'm sure some other guitarists in Helloween used strats often too

the fact is, after 9 days, this will be a major factor

edit: someone made a promo video for the tour where you can see the steinberger in action: http://video.aol.co.uk/video-detail/sekt-korr-8-europa-tour-2010/3381759373

That is a most enviable position you find yourself in gwEm !  What a great experience that's going to be . As you also observed , Germany is a great place.  Be heartened by an interview with 'Snailpace Slim' of the Hamsters, when he noted that he played better, the more tired he got on tour.

All the very best for a safe journey - and some great memories .  :D

the most you've done is 3?
how are you getting around? in a van?

Think the most i did in a row was 23 nights. with a lot of 14-16hour drives between venues.

Germany is cool though.
I recommend taking along some revive. those soluble vitamin C tablets that you can bang in some water. have one of those a day. Get some change ready if you want to use bathrooms in german service stations. don't get caught shoplifting. Other than that, accept that showering, eating and sleeping well are luxuries if you get them.

yes, I did a tour of switzerland by train once and did 3 dates on the trot - not a massive tour, but it seems like even my 9 date tour is short by your standards :) its a van this time indeed.

these are pretty good tips! i'm no thief, so no worries on the shoplifting - though I get the feeling there might be a cool story behind this one? ;)

Sweet zombie jesus that sounds like fun. If you're touring Germany (or Europe in general) in the summer I'd love to tag along as a roadie. I'm clean and can take care of all those pesky foreign groupies.

Congratulations. You're gonna see most of the boring or nasty places of Germany.  :D
Ok, not that bad... but you are really missing out on the nicer cities.

Actually, re-reading, if badgermark's doing the lugging... I'd be inclined to take the V, and the Steinberger, and you'll need a strat, of course... and a spare one of each...

Is the Johnny Winter V still the surprising favourite?

No joke this would be a dream come true. Gwem is a cool bloke and I love Germany. Plus I'll be bored shiteless during my summer break. Plus my crowning musical achievement is lugging a 2x12 Vox Valvtronix, bass drum and two guitar hardcases up 3 flights of stairs at the Cathouse in Glasgow. I'm a mule.

If Badgermark is going I want to go too.. You'll need someone to keep him in line & procure "entertainment" for after the gigs.

Pfft, in my day we had to haul the bass players 8 x 10 Ampeg cabs around. Two of the $%&#ers.

I've carted many an ampeg 8x10 about. A 2x12 combo up the Cathouse stairs by yourself is worse. It's a four man job minimum getting an 8x10 up them.

Hellish layout for a venue. Then you've the classic grand 30 seconds walk down the road, which is almost as bad. Lifts? Pah!

That's a great shot!  You're the right height and build to suit a V.  Whereas I am too short and round.  :|

(Short Round....... wasn't he that Goonies kid in Indiana Jones?)

Not the John Birch V then?  For ease I'd take the Steinberger.

Last night when I was playing a solo, someone from the crowd put a hat upside down in front of me, and then people started throwing coppers into it. Not quite sure what to make of that!!

Must be the famous German sense of humour :)

The people of Halle are very friendly and party hard. Its 3am on a Monday night and people still drinking and dancing. Snapped my A-string during Breaking The Law, which wasn't ideal.. Need to find ttime to change the strings more often.

The schedule is exhausting and I have had a permanent hangover the last four days! But the music part of it is still something I love, even more maybe.

My chops are absolutely on top form, which is not to sound arrogant (I'm still far from a great player), its just a question of consistancy.. My basic Tatler and Roth licks are being rinsed out with a high level of reliability ;)

Sometimes with my solos I have to laugh, since I am here in Germany and blantantly ripping off old Uli.. no one has noticed.

The food and beer is great of course, and we listen to Iron Maiden in the van today, so I think I can make it to the end. Next time a less tough schedule would be better.

I decided to take my white Greco V and not risk my '84 Gibson. Even if I think the Greco is a bit more delicate than that Gibson battle axe, she has done very well so far!

:)

well, here you can see some video:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TdxK3xjDiAM
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wsUNsYPTcPA

Thats an '81 Greco with A5/4 Mule set direct into Sansamp British pedal. Despite the couple of obvious errors in my playing, I'm generally quite pleased with the recordings.

I'm back, but with an evil throat infection. Despite alot of shitee moments, it was all well worth it, and I'd certainly be up for such a tour again, maybe with a rest day in the middle though! Much heavy partying :) This was a real experience for me, and alot different to doing the odd show here and there.

Do you tour completely solo, gwEm, and buddy up (and party) with people you meet along the way?

Sounds like great life experience, but utterly terrifying for a shrinking violet like meself.

On this tour I was together on a bill each night with three other (very cool electro) acts. My drummer was with me for the first three dates, and I played the last six shows alone.
