Not sure if anyones seen this yet but Slash has got Cypress Hill and someone called Fergie (who Ive never heard of) to collaberate on a remake of Paradise City for his new solo album.
The intro is just plain WRONG. It sucks so much ass. 20 seconds in it does get better, and I like that its been made a bit heavier than the original. Some of the sung vocals (Fergie i presume?) are really nice too IMO.
Im a big fan of rap metal so this probably appeals to me more than it would if I was just a straight rock/GnR fan, although I wouldnt exactly rate it that highly.
Anyway, see what you think.

I'll have to waiut until I get home to see the video, but have you really never heard of Fergie?
-
Unless youre talking about the fat ginger tax money waster, then nope, never.
-
i think ive seen this before.
If it's what im think then it's pretty entertaining if a bit weird. Rap metal in general is a bit bad I find. I don't mind bands with hip hop influences but sometimes it's just odd.
cyprus hill + biohazard on state of the world address. How It Is. hard song!
Onyx + Biohazard... maybe not so good.
Stuck Mojo... a lot of material is borderline aweful esoecially the recent stuff.
E Town Concrete... AMAZING!
Slash + Cyprus Hill is a novel PR idea

To be fair, she's a thin ginger tax money waster nowadays.
Fergie is Stacy Ferguson from the Black Eyed Peas. I obviously hang out with too many pop fans.

Was going to say fergie ferg..weirdly thing that annoys me mot is the guitar sound
-
Oh lord. The guitar tone is indeed awful. Is slash doing a signature SS marshall now or what?
Rapping things that weren't designed to be rapped never works. Ever. Rap is all about rhythm (if it's about anything at all other than making ugly talentless people rich) and proper lyrics just don't lend themselves to the kind of rhythm required.
That said, at least it's bad enough I'll probably never have to hear it again. That's the best thing about this cover I think.

if it's about anything at all? 'proper' lyrics?
are you suggesting hip hop doesn't have any meaningful lyrics or topics associated with it?

Music I don't like is rubbish! It's talentless! They don't have proper lyrics! Wah Wah Waaaaaaaah!
Wheesht, you dafty.

I'm guessing Dr. Stein might say:
To avoid confusion, please assume all words above are jovial and follow the prefix "In my opinion".

Wow. I've heard the human brain struggles with 'of', didn't know 'if' caused problems too...
In terms of exposure, rap as a genre of music has a massively high percentage of talentless 'artists'. I doubt many would disagree with that. Hence the parenthesis. Simple.
Lyrics, definitionally, are to be sung. Categorising rap vocals as singing is at least as problematic as categorising a lot of rap tracks as music. Very much a borderline case. Hence 'proper'.
For the record, I'm not big on rap generally, but I do quite like a number of things which I don't refer to as "music" or "lyrics". Ice cream, for example, is quite plainly not music, but I still like it. I don't consider "it's not music" a derogatory expression.
Also, what Philly Q said.

Same as most genre's of music/entertainment.

Really? Honestly?

You don't consider hiphop music? is that what you're saying?

Er, yes, as might I...

The majority of people within any musical movement are always going to be fairly talentless individuals riding on the coattails of others, that really goes without saying, so bothering to mention it tends to reveal bias, you wrote it in a fashion that suggests that almost all hip hop has no worth, and that's fairly silly, you know you did that because you wanted to have a wee dig at it, and did it intentionally, so stand behind it! :P
I'd define lyrics as any words annunciated over music, myself. As I'd imagine most people would. Are you really saying only words which are sung are "Proper lyrics" :? ie. the majority of, say, Leonard Cohen's songs don't have proper lyrics?
-
Insane in da brain!
This reminds me of that South Park episode where George Lucas and Steven Spielberg are raping their movie characters.
In a jovial manner and followed by IMO: RAP=cr@p

Both definitions exist, take your pick.
I don't like rap, I've said as much, but I can't be arsed getting into an argument about its overall artistic merit on the internet. All I'm saying is that there is a reasonable argument that a significant proportion of modern hiphop should not be classified as music, mainly due to lack of melody. It's an open question.

Not a fan of this version at all, Cypress Hill kinda spoiled it for me, but Fergie's vocals on this song = pure win. I knew she had talent, and she's not too over-the-top on this recording at all. I think she really got it spot on.
-
Well, I've learnt a lot from this thread...
First off, I thought Cypress Hill was a place! (I hope that kinda establishes my credentials for contributing to this musicology discussion )
Anyway, this Fergie bint sounds pretty good - to start with I was thinking: "has that screeching bloke finally learnt to sing???!". Then I realised it was someone else... Black Eyed Peas you say? Mebbe I ought to check them out...
But I have to say that, for me personally, and I would guess in direct opposition to most on here... er... I have to say that I much prefer this version to the original.
I even went and dragged out the old CD to check (I got as far as the chorus after the first verse and then had to switch it off, I just find them unlistenable).
But this Slash & Cypress Hill version I listened to all the way through, and quite enjoyed it. I wouldn't go out and buy it or anything, I just found it pleasant enough to listen to. Funnily enough, I didn't really notice there was any rapping or wotnot going on (and I'm not a big fan of that usually) until I read this thread afterwards... I also thought the riffing sounded better than on the original (but what do I know?) ... All in all it just sounded "good" to me (as in I didn't find myself reaching for the stop button before it finished).
Poor old Guns and Roses though (all the stuff I've ever heard anyway), I have always found them, and probably always will find them, to be utter torture to sit through... I can see they had something, don't get me wrong, they had some nice tunes and some of the songs weren't too bad... but I just can't stand the noise they made. Everytime I try to listen to it, I have to turn it off after a track or so...
There's only two reasons I haven't binned the CD:
1) Apparently my missus used to like them, saw them in their pomp, even, and she might want to listen to it one day (doubtful though )
2) I never throw any music away, even stuff I think is utter utter @rse, because there's always a chance that one day I might "get it" and then I'll regret binning it.
Edit: Nadzilla posted while I was waffling - spot on about her singing, didn't know her, or of her at all, but I was well impressed with that performance :D

the raping made me sick.. i cant stand that shite.
fergie.. has a pretty good rock n' roll voice. same as christina aguilera. such a shame she's wasting her time with the pop cr@p she does
-
I'm quite fond of this after one listen but then I like rap, rock and rap/rock. Anthrax and Public Enemy's collaboration plus the "Judgment Night" soundtrack have always featured heavily on rotation in my house. I like this a lot better than "Chinese Democracy".
-
i really like it. surprising how well it works, and Fergie's a real surprise. Maybe she should front VR?

It couldn't make them any worse. And she's an absolute model of sobriety compared with Scott Weiland.
-
its a bit 'meh' they should do another collaboration though - something original (no cover/remix)
