I know theres some good knowledge around here so Ill seek advices on those boards.
Im seeling a bit gear, had enough gibsons so Im looking for something more metal.
had a bargain on an esp ninja sig but the guy thinks 1500 euros arent enough for his model..
also have the chance to be able to buy a jackson rr1t with lundgren pickups for 1200 euros in case, dunno if its that nice, read alot on jackson, good and not so good things. Had a japanese slsmg with duncans once, was nice but a bit soul less. tried a good bunch of horizons and esp eclipse and did not find it that awesome.
Only esp Im looking at his the eclipse full thickness to reach the custom les paul vibe with good fat sound.
Any thoughts on that ?
-
I have the ESP Eclipse normal thickness, can't complain, love it a lot. It's my main metal guitar.
I also dig the ESP Horizons with the fixed bridge.
-
now do you want a guitar that does metal or a gutar that looks metal? :D
i like guitars that do metal and are a bit understated.. and i dont think anyone does this better than ESP.. i had a mk II deluxe years back and was an incredible metal guitar.
however if you want to match the les pauls vibe and get a guitar that looks shite in pics but great strapped on, and can take on a paul for that bottom end a left field suggestion is the black peavey wolfgang, which can be had for around a thousand. i had one of these too and beat the cr@p out of anything round it in its price range, has a dtuna too
if you fancy something really different check out the Muzic zoo charvel natural series and go find the koa bodied ones. with a change of PU's these would be incredible. the do em in maghony for that low end growl but the koa is beautiful

As for look I had explorers and V by gibson but it remains a rock n roll feeling inside it. I want something metal, loaded and thought for that.
Im not so keen on charvels or jackson except the rhoads rr1 T with fixed bridge. But im fearing it to sound thin, saw some videos on tube stacks and it sounded thin on a rectifier modern channel.
So Im more looking on esp since I tried lately a kh2 bolt on and it really screamed, thick, growly, powerful. really liked it except the floyd rose.
I know the horizon nt I comes close with fixed bridge and ash/alder woods. But I once tried one with quilted top, bet it was a nt II and really disliked it.
As for the look , im more on a classic vibe, gibson like Vee's, les paul shaped , strat.
-
hmm ok, sounds weird but im still gona reccomend the wolfgang
its shaped but not excessively so, it doesnt sound thin.. ever :) it has a floyd.. but, its set flat to the body as opposed to floating, so the benefits of a fixed bridge there. i know its a bit leftfield of what you what you're looking for, or not the first thing you had in mond.. all i can say is try one and you'll see what i mean.. amazing neck too
-
The Pro X Mockingbird looks pretty metal, does have EMG's in though.
-
A used USA Dean would be a good option in that price range.

Look into these:

Could go custom shop, Will makes incredible instruments and at a price that won't make you homeless!

I'd go for he Jackson. With those Lundgrens in there it's gonna be bitching. Jackson USA models are of very high quality too.

 I was a massive AK fan, though I only use Verdelet for forums and such as it's easy to remember, and hardly anyone uses it - that email address is ancient and only ever use it for signing up to forums/websites, and as for my T, well... it's just a coincidence I wore it on the day we had a photoshoot...
Back on topic, that Jackson is definitely worth it!

dude you wanna try one of these
http://www.thomann.de/gb/schecter_hellraiser_solo_006_bch.htm
You can get it in black, white too....absolute mahogany tone machine for 800 euros and therefore plenty of money left over to buy some BKPs to make it even better. You're gonna love the larger frets for metal and once you enjoy that ultralow fret access you'll wonder why you ever played les pauls. I've got 2 schecter hellraiser flying Vs and the playability and fret access is better than my ESP SV standard, a much more expensive guitar. I love the Xj frets on the ESP though! seriously check em out.

i don' t mean to sound like a smartass, but what do you look exactly in a "metal" guitar? i've owned a extremely metal black jackson rhoads, i've got a metal LTD EC1000 (why metal, after all? doesn't it look more or less exactly like a les paul?), i've got a lot of Ibanez guitars (that are a bit demodee but slightly metal nonetheless...) and for sure they don't feel much more metal than my gibsons... in the sense that (apart the looks, but my sunburst Cicolin looks way more dangerous than my black Ibz RG, for example...) i don't get the point of the whole "metal guitar" thing... you can stick a couple of warpigs in a Hello Kitty Squire and sound much heavier than with a BC rich with moderate output pickups...
just my opinion... and i'd go for an ESP/LTD anyway... :)

Ill be clearer, i sought alternatives to gibson esp jackson by posting here. By metal I mainly mean loaded with hot pickups stock from factory. I tried somes on my way and Im finding esp' and prs way too sober. They are built and sound awesome for anything but its way too hifi or clean sounding. I miss the gibson dirtyness. I bet I'll buy a les paul classic with 500t ceramic or another explorer. :)
as for custom built ones I rather step aside such things. Done it once with a custom explorer that ended into a metal machine but you never know the sound of those before its built and there you already paid even if you don't like it. Adding Im a gas freak so Im selling alot and custom built guitars are loosing a lot of their initial value when sold secondhand in France.

still sounds to me like you should try some USA deans...

way overpriced for his budget, and way overpriced in general,I've never been impressed by their quality. Japanese ESP over USA dean anytime and everytime.

I would go custom (oh wait, I did go custom!), so clearly my advice on that front isn't up your street (although in my case, I got everything I had hoped for and more from my custom build).
BUT: whatever guitar you get, why are you talking as though the pickups can't be changed?????? Just get a good axe and whack some BKPs in it (or organise this with your luthier at the design stage if going custom, as I did).
Why bother with stock pickups when you're spending that kind of money? Madness! (Unless the stock pickups are okay, but still, these are the BKP forums, what do you *think* we're going to say??!).
I really don't want to use the phrase "more money than sense", but if you believe that changing pickups is a big deal and would rather spend a LOT of money on another guitar instead, I may be forced to use it...

I created this topic to get some chops on brands I would never have taken into consideration. Im also plenty satisfied with my custom explorer as it brought things that never happen on mainstream metal axes like a fat maple set neck with no paint on it and a real explorer shape baritone scale that helps to play tuned to drop B easily in front of gibson shortscale ;). But im facing I love to sell and buy gear so often that another custom might not be the best choice.
As for pickups your right roo bkps are sick and worth being put on a guitar :D.
My search came to end with a bargain les paul custom (20y old lady) that showed up lately. ill go for this one with a holy diver bridge :D.

I didn't like my ESP when I got it almost new. It took about a year of playing until it started to sound fuller, warmer and more open. Before that it was dry and very sterile sounding.
I think many guitars are like speakers, they need to be played a while till they sound their full potential. Luckily I left this one in our band's rehearsal room, so I did play it quite a lot regularly (at that time I thought I'd keep it as the live beater guitar, because I didn't want to damage my SG by playing it live).

does not look metal does not even smell like steel and sweat or beer. But plays nice and sounds big.
Now the big ask what bkp to get rid of this 498t s*cker ! I like the neck one, those 20 years made it actually softer and rounder, though i would not compare it to a cold sweat but even if you beat me, ill do it. It sounds in the same ballpark and its for now to my taste. I smell some holy diver aged gold upcoming for the bridge position.
