Title: Classic Cars
Post by: Bainzy on February 28, 2010, 11:14:56 PM
Anyone else here got one? Or had one with any stories to tell? My current ride is a 1978 Spitfire:

...incidentally its actually my first car!    :)

It's in nice nick. Shouldn't it be more rust coloured? ;)

It used to be! Its had loads of metal replaced - one sill, boot floor, door posts, battery box etc. The previous owner took a rustbucket of a car and restored it basically. Although its waxoyl'd I don't take it out in the rain if I can help it, hopefully with a bit of care I can fend off rust.

My first car was an MG BGT  :D

Got bored of the slow speed though, and sold it to buy a 205 GTi

it's a Triumph it was made of rust! ;) Give me a TR-4A any day.

MGBGT and TR4, nice cars. I drove a TR6 last week, the first time I'd driven a TR.

Bloody. Heck. The thing was like shite off a shovel, only 160bhp but it felt like a lot more. I actually felt quite scared driving it, and I'm a big tough guy whos scared of nuffin', lol. Perhaps that was also in part because it was worth 3x what my Spitfire is though!

I remember the Spitfires well.Triumphs were not known for their reliability though and there was the corrosion issues but they looked good. Yours looks cool.

Arghhhhh! You'll be posting Austin Allegros with the square steering wheels next!

I need to stare at one of these now to make up for that shock!

Until a few years ago, I had one of these (in Brooklands Green):

http://www.conceptcarz.com/vehicle/default.aspx?carID=9361&i=4#menu

It's a 1964 Austin Healey Sprite.  It was looovely, but had to go.

Now I've got one of these sitting about which I really do need to sell (I still maintain it's the best car I've ever owned which is why I've still got it, much to the wifes disgust)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BMW_3_Series_(E30)

For some reason the link isn't working propperly so you'll have to close the brackets at the end of the address.

It's exactly like the one in the picture.  If you promise to treat it nice, I might let you have it cheep

Didn't the sprite and the older MG share a lot of parts?

Weren't those the ones which were better aerodynamically, going backwards?

Yeah, they're essentially the same car as an MG Midget with a different grill and a bit of extra trim on the sprite.  They were built on production lines right next to each other.

Good cars, even if you're over six foot like I am, yo just have to make sure the window winder is in the right position to stop your knee banging on it.  Also has a A series engine (same as a mini) so it is fairly tunable.

Not really interested in cars if they aren't 4x4's. Does an old Hilux count as a classic yet?

I've been driving classic cars for years. My first was a hot rodded '74 Manta. After that a '76 Mustang II hatchback. I recently sold that one and I'm now working on a '79 Mustang Cobra V8 that needs a little TLC.

This pic is a couple of weeks old. Most of the tech work is done already. After this pic I cleaned, polished and waxed the body and gave the window moldings a new coat of paint. That all needs to be done a second time for the best result.

It still needs a new bumper cover and some paint touch ups here and there.

Mine was a metallic light blue fiesta with a black vinyl roof (ripped). My Dad bought it from some Indian guy he got chatting to in an insurance shop. The car reeked of curry. It was sold before I even passed my driving test. Next car was a Maestro   :(

My Beemer is a classic, so is your Merc.  I keep telling people who have less than a grand to spend on a car to get one of those two, but no one believes me...... suckers

I have a classic Mini in Pageant Blue (a 70's colour), 1275 engine with a ported and gas-flowed head, Maniflow exhaust and original Minilites if any of that means anything to anyone! It's awesome though; loves roundabouts!
I'll see if I can find a pic!  8)

Most uncharacteristically for me, it's a superstrat (well it was over 20 years ago).  Looks pretty good, sounds like shite.

(Sorry for the thread hijack, by the way.   I know nothing about cars, can't even drive.)

Did not know about this Triumph cars... The motorbikes are like not very common here in Brazil, kinda expensive... Is it the same manufacturer???
Does that cars are good? this TR6 looks amazing!!! :D
Title: Re: Classic Cars

Yeah, they're kind of the same manufacturer.  The old Triumph died a long time ago but a bloke called John Bloor resurected the name and carried on the motorbike side of things.

The factory is about 10 minutes from my house, I had an interview there once........ and my mates folks live in John Bloors old house (they're rich - it's massive).

Wish I could afford a classic car and the upkeep, I can barely afford my Micra :(

I'm 6'0 and it's absolutely fine. Gets a bit uncomfortable on long journeys but you just have to stop and stretch your legs every so often.

For anyone that's thinkig about it, I would add that Mini's are a great project. The engine is really basic and very tuneable if that's your thing. Insurance is cheap, parts are dirt cheap (in England anyway) and if you get yourself in an owners' club you'll find there are loads of people that are willing to help you with any restoration, cheap second hand parts and expert knowledge. I've now met 3 people that used to work at John Cooper's tuning works, and am lucky enough to have one of them breath on my engine  :D

Fantastic cars. Have you ever seen any MG cars? The smaller Triumphs like the Spitfire, GT6 etc are a bit like the MGB, slightly less robust but edgier and (imo) a lot more fun. The TR series (like the TR6) were in a league of their own really, and there's nothing similar by other manufacturers until you start talking Austin Healey prices. For £7000-15,000 you can get a TR6 that is incredible fun to drive.

Check this video out - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HIv0gNwZfFA

That TR6 I drove recently, probably the most awesome car I've ever been in to be honest (driving or as a passenger).

cerpintaxt - that mini is beautiful!!  :D

Got to agree there, but I still love Spitfires.  Wifey is 30 soon and I was looking at another classic for her birthday.  I'd like an Austin Healey 3000 but there's not a chance of that.  (I was lucky enough to go in a Sebring version which had a stage 3 V8 and about 550bhp.  It was the most awesome car I've ever been in.)

She wants a frog eye though and I suppose that it is supposed to be for her and not me.

Damn skippy.  Here's a photo of one similar.

The one I went in was half blue and half white with acream leather interior.  It really was the mutts nutts (looked way nicer than the one in the photo).

Here's what the wife wants, but I've been thinking of a kit version instead so that I can get more juice out of it.  They're just too damn slow

Yeh the Frogeye Sprite engines are less than 1000cc aren't they? I'd definately do the kit option if I were getting one. My dad always talks about his mate Phil who used to have a Frogeye, and says "I told him not to sell it, that it'd be worth a fair bit one day..."
