Always and an appreciation of him, but I might have to get this DVD...
Mark.

Although I don't like much of his music, his talent and technique are out of this world - amazing.
-
The band look like a nice tight-knit group, kinda reminds me of the Folk gatherings they filmed as part of the "Transatlantic Sessions" tv programs.
I always had a soft spot for Asian violinists, I'd still choose Vanessa Mae over Ann Marie Calhoun though.

THAT is what has turned me from a loving to not caring about what he pumps out.
"Little Alligators" on Fire garden was probably that last f**king "SONG" the man bothered to play!!
His output is going up his own ass faster than a fanboy's tongue. :(

... don't sugar coat it for us, Dave - say what you mean, boy!

Vai vs Cooder
Incidently, thats one of my favorite movies.
-
Was listening to vai last night on youtube, and now i want a fernandes sustainer (and talent, but will make do with the sustainer)
-
A hugely talented guitarist, but I lost interest when the showman in him overtook the musician.
Loved his Zappa days.

Great chat about his audition for Zappa.

i unapologetically love Steve Vai!
i've seen him live a few times, and he's a great entertainer. of course he's the star of the show, but every band member also got their moments in the spotlight. and the music is always amazing.
i have always found his music much more interesting and listenable than other virtuoso guitarists. while Satriani has some great tunes, he generally bores the hell out of me! :)
i'll never be able to play like him, and i have no desire to slavishly buy all his gear, but he did inspire me to get a Fernandes sustainer, which is great

A perfect example of an amazing player that's has disgustingly hideous taste.
Sky Scr@per and Eat Em and Smile are wonderful albums and Sex and Religion is very good also, it's a shame he couldn't have continued working with Townsend or some other meaningful band.
+ he's repulsive to watch perform.
-
is that a flying V violin? awesome!
-
I absolutely love almost everything he did starting at Passion & Warfare and ending with the first half of Fire Garden. Everything before and since has been virtually unlistenable to me. For those amazing 3.5 albums I am a huge Vai fan and I consider Sex & Religion not only a vastly underratted classic but one of my top ten albums of all time.
Its just a shame he's descended into tastless Zappa-esque musical wankathons rather than creating songs.
Still love the guy tho, I just cant bring myself to listen to him anymore :(

I think I see two Vai camps...
Camp A) Play to serve the song
Camp B) Play to serve his ego
When the two coincide that's the music I like.
When you look into the audience and see a seminar group full of middle age wanna-be's taking notes and no women - your playing is too up your own ass.
-
^ Did you ever see him with Whitesnake? I suspect that would be far more up your street...
I saw him at Donnington, and he was fecking amazing.
-
Yup I was there!
One of the most showstopping performances by an individual guitarist within a band context I've ever seen. He was as big as the stage required that night.
With Roth too..
Till Firegarden he still tried to throw us a bone by way of the rare chorus... Then the sphincter snapped shut and I've been bored since.
This artistic self obsession doesn't have to happen.. Ask Paul Gilbert how it's done.
-
well.. i cannot bring myself to listen to the vast majority of his albums, but his live gigs are some of the best i've seen
-
^yeah, can't really sit and listen to him, but when i saw him at G3 he put on a fantastic show and it was hugely enjoyable.
-
More posing and posturing than Celine Dion these days. I still have Flexable on vinyl (original cover) and Passion & Warfare (also vinyl). Haven't bought anything of his except the G3 dvds since though
