Title: Reverb...gone?
Post by: horsehead on March 05, 2010, 07:57:22 AM
I was having a chat with one of the lads from the local guitar shop the other day, who told me that Reverb went on monday? Now I've never heard anything like this before about them...& it's a fair few stores as well. Anyone else heard this?

Music Ground in Manchester has closed too, sign in the window yesterday said "relocated" ... with a telephone number no new address so I assume they're just going to be selling online now.

Good.  I hate that chain - heard so may bad stories about their vintage guitars and amps.

haha, not met many people with a good word for music ground.

They sold me an ECC83 valve with only one half working. When I took it back they tried to fob me off with an ECC81.

I quite liked Music Ground in Manchester, it was handiliy inbetween where I park and my office.  I'd rather pop in there and try a nice vintage LP Junior than step foot in Dawsons or Forsyths.  I hate the guitar bit in Dawsons, it is like Argos for guitars.

But hopefully this will all help my local shop Sounds Great out.  The fact they have always let me play any guitar even when I was a whipper or clearly not going top buy it means I always buy anything I can from there which over the years has been a lot.

Tough times for guitar shops though and I wish all the folks who work at Reverb well.  Ironically the choice and constant cost bashing the internet has brought might spell the end of the guitar shop as we know it.

Perhaps something like Richtone is the way forward, a kind of unnasuming warehouse with a small appointment only customer section to try things out.

Music Ground gone as well, bloody hell, I was only in there a couple of weeks ago. Wasn't that much tasty there, apart from some amps.

Don't worry about it, I only just found out from this thread that there's a Sounds Great store at Cheadle Royal. Last time I was up there it was just TGI Fridays and John Lewis.

I think this is the beginning of the end for high street guitar shops and that's a bad thing. It's all very well buying a £60 Squier off the internet but who wants to buy £2000 guitars that way? That kind of investment takes at least an hour of putting the guitar through its paces on at least one amp, followed by a coffee break to think about the purchase then another hour's playing before the cash comes out.

We were meant to be hearing what was going on yesterday. Didn't and no one's answering phones at head office. Presumably the company's now in administration but they've made no announcement on it.

I'm pretty sure it's been there longer than the TGI Fridays Frank!
I'll ask them when I go there tomorrow to borrow a cab for 2 mins to help check what I just broke, my new gold speaker or my Martamp head  :( :( :(

Blimey, I lived just down the road in Cheadle Hulme about 10 years ago and I never knew

I dunno, after a jug of TGI Friday's Long Island iced tea there could have been a nudist colony there and I wouldn't have noticed

Got a letter from insolvency agents this morning. So that's it gone.

Sorry to hear that. And angry to hear that because it's unlikely to come as a shock to the company, directors can always see months in advance when their company is failing and they almost never bother to warn their staff that they're in financial difficulty. Letting pay cheques bounce is disgraceful.

I'd be surprised if the director's pay cheque bounced.

haha not surprising. they've not been stocking decent stock for a while now, who wants to go in to a store and and look at a wall of cheap squier strats or at the other extreme loads of 2 grand PRS guitars. What a failure, people, evcen beginners know what they want in more depth through internet research.

the leicester reverb closed even before xmas I think which is a shame cos there was one guy there called will who's worked there since it was carlsboro->academy of sound-> soundcontrol-> reverb. He was a good lad and has unfortunately lost his job thanks to shitee management and supply.

Im a bit gutted about musicground in manchester going.   I always theought it well overpriced but it did use to have some lefties in and not just your usual epi les paul and mex strat or mex tele token lefty selection.      Musicground  used to be my usual stop for plectrums and a quick look round the odd lunchtime.   I just seemed to perfer to give them a few pound on plectrums than Jonny Roadhouse over the other side of the road.

It wasn't exactly a shop full of dreams when I went there the other week. Obviously good stock wasn't being bought in.

Shame - I've bought some stuff from their staff, when they worked round the corner at what used to be A1 then various other places. It's not the first time for the staff

A1 Music, that was the place ... although I remember it in the early 1980s when the shop front was onm Oxford Road and you had to squeeze past the counter and go downstairs to the mouldy dungeon full of manky old guitars, those were the days.

I used to head across from Liverpool at the time.
When I wanted a change from Hessy's!
