Title: Hughes and Kettner Puretone? Update - Nope... MJW
Post by: Matt77 on March 05, 2010, 05:13:15 PM

I'm mulling over my latest acquisition strategy...

Anyone got any first hand experience of these?
If so what's your impression.

Not a direct experience of that particular amplifier, but I knew a Bass Player who used H&K amplification exclusively - and it was the clearest, warmest - quality sound I had ever heard from a Bass amp, bar none.

Hughes, Kettner, Pure, and Tone are 4 words I would never normally put in the same sentence.

Sorry, no firsthand experience with this one. Good luck in your search!

I did try the statesman dual el84 and it was far from bad for the price - not my cup of tea, but by itself as good as other amps in the same ballpark.

Reason I was asking is this.....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=250591929092&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:VRI

Seems very cheap, even for ex-demo

Is that with the cab for £799?

If you want a gigging amp, how about a used Martamp Plexi with Power Scaling for £600???

I had a Triamp MkII, their flagship model, and I conclude that H&K are not amps with any type of Mojo. They could as well be solid state if you ask me. Sorry for the bashing, but for that money you get much better Marshalls, Martamps etc in UK.

:o If I had the money I would be buying that right now!

hmmm tempting. Very tempting. Shobet maybe if not me? Have the money, but I'm speaking to Martin later about something. We will see

I wanted to buy one actually, a store in Birmingham had one in stock a long time ago. I absolutely loved it, but it was just out of my budget as an amateur player, so I went with a much cheaper (and tonally much less "pure") Krank.

Would it not just be like you Roadstar but with some of the great tone diverted into neon lighting?

I'd say the 25w power rating is not 'a 'clean' rating either, so I presume it would just sound like an 18 watter?

Would definitely by the Plexi before the Puretone!

Yeah think I'd go for the one Twinfan pointed out on Music Radar above that.
Although for me the JTM 45 with 2x12 cab in Johnny Roadhouse which you may be able to pinch at £700 or less if you are shrewd would be also be a better purchase.

As it happens I have just bought a Vox VT15 for £110 and I'm so blown away I'm never going to buy another amp again and just mike it up. It rocks.

err...actually... that's bollocks.
I did buy one yesterday, but only to bridge a small term gap. I'd have no amp at the moment otherwise

I've been chewing the fat with Martin about something today. Top secret plans are afoot. So as it happens the trigger has been pulled. New amp and guitar on the way.  :D

hmm, id seriously consider you go and play through an orange rockerverb 50 head if you want pure tone, ive had a few h&k amps and could never dial in the sound in my head! once i played a rockerverb i bought it and ive never looked back , truly great amps!

I like the thought of an Orange, but, some of the specific stuff I'd need it for it can't do.
Hence I'm going down the custom route with MJW

Somebody spill them, I'm intrigued.

I think want one too, so need to know what it is :D

BTW, what's happened to your Roadstar Matt?

All hush-hush eh?  No problemo.

I guess I should spill the beans at some point about my first 'MJW' too shouldn't I?  ;)

Yes.
I think someone else has a few things planned.
Someone's initials may be on a certain task list on the wall of a certain production facility I have just come from

A few things?  Only the one mate!

Yes, I'm on Martin's waiting list.  Even after the money I've spent on his amps I have to wait like everyone else!

I joined the list in early January, and I think my MJW will be up and running around May time for the first round of appraisals and tweaking.  Martin likes it when I come up with ideas for new amps to test him!

I see. I really do want a MJW at some point as well. I guess I'll just have to stick to the Martamp for the time being.

Oh alright, my turn
I'm in need of an extra few % in volume (Shobet's fault)
I've ordered a Roadstar 36 Mondiale from Martin
It's going in the existing case of the 18w head I have for one reason or another.

I don't believe you have only thing planned Dave!
At least not for long

Ahh, so more of the same but with the EF86 channel as well.  I think 18 watts is great for getting good valve drive at decent level but with loudish band it will never quite have enough headroom, certainly by the end of the night anyway.

That will be a sweet amp!

Post by: Matt77 on March 07, 2010, 11:30:19 PM
That's the plan. Still love the 18w but things move on.
Plus it's going to be powerscaled letting me use it at home.
You are welcome to have a go when it's ready. Probably be awesome for what you would use an amp for

Cripes, how do you guys cope?? I have a 120W 5150-II and it's just about right for keeping up with our monster drummer and bassist!

18W? Sheesh!

Don't worry Roo - they're just pussies...

(Mind you, if you were to play a man's geetarTM, you'd find you'd only need 18W to clobber everyone else )

It's actually because I'm only good enough to play in small venues. Mostly toilets, BBQs and scout's huts

I read this as High Gain Onion :D

I'm interested in this, I love my JCM800 but it lacks a little of the oomph and definition I want at times.

definitely a different idea, is this just a one off Martin is doing for you, or something Martin is going to make an option?

A one-off for me at the moment, but it will probably be an option if it works out how we hope  :)
