Title: Chimaira - "Infection" - pickup advice needed
Post by: pop on March 13, 2010, 09:42:36 PM
Hey guys,

once again I need some pickup advice.

Which BKPs would you recommed for my ESP Eclipse (all Magohagny with ebony fretboard) to get a sound like on the new Chimaira album "Infection"?

Here are some clips:

Many thanks in advance!

even the alnico pig can do that through a peavey or engl
but I'd stick with a ceramic pup, model depending on how you like your mids
I'd go extreme and pull the c-pig

Thanks for your help. As there are a lot of very tight and surgical riffing passages on the album I'm afraid that a alnico pu can't deliver that.
But I'll definitely consider the C-Pig.

What do you think of a painkiller or miracle man for that purpose?

I would go for a Miracle Man for that kind of music!
It's tight and heavy and perfectly voiced for some technical riffing in drop c. Not that the C-Pig wouldn't also work, I just think the Pig is a bit *too much* for anything...

i'd suggest a C-pig... it's evil, brutal and perfectly controllable on tightest passages. i'm a massive warpig lover, i've got at least a bridge pig in 3 of my guitars!

It doesnt 'need' it, but get a c-pig. It'll get that sound.

You guys are great, thanks.

To give me a better idea, how does the Cpig compare to the CS in terms of tightness? (I play a CS in my LPC)
I'm still having some fears that it might not be tight enough because of its huge bottom end. Even though I love it's saturated sound in the clips.

Its not quite as tight, but its more focussed overall. The CS is tight, but open.

+1 on the miracle man

The C-pig I had in my EC-1000 was just too OTT but the miracle man that is in there now is perfect. Really balanced and tight.

BTW what amp are you using?

I just saw that I made a mistake in my initial post. I currently have nailbombs in my ESP Eclipse and I want to keep them in there. What I want to replace are the EMGs in my LTD Viper - but I don't think that this makes a difference for my pickup choice anyway, does it?

I'm not using a "real" amp - I'm playing through a Axe-Fx  - mainly recording direct.
For my current high gain sounds I use the Peavy 5150 and the Soldano SLO 100 model and sometimes the Mesa Mark IIC.

Doesn't the miracle man have even move bass than the c-pig?

No.
