Title: Need a new guitar
Post by: crispsandwich on November 27, 2005, 10:47:09 AM
I'm selling my current amp (Vox AD30VT) because the high gains are terrible. My guitar is also useless. It's hard to play (my fault for messing with the action, trying to get rid of fret buzz), and despite the great BKPs I have in it, it sounds thin. But it's a Strat style guitar so it comes with the territory I guess. So I'm going to save a bit of cash and buy a new guitar. I'll want it to have 22/24 frets, be very comfortable to play (don't want any chance of RSI flaring up) and sound full and meaty. Also, preferably H/S/S as I can then use the BKPs I've got (Nailbomb/Mother's/Trilogy). Anyone have any suggestions? Around the £300-£500 mark.

fender deluxe fat strat??

Its hard to think of H/S/S guitars in this type of price range, because usually they are like beginners pacificas (under £200) or Tom Andersons or suchlike (over £2000 :P ). also i kind of got the vibe you wanted to steer away from strat style guitars - which makes things an awful lot harder again.

What kind of body shape are you looking for? or does it not matter - just gotta be comfy? For this kind of price you could probably buy a body and neck off of Warmoth or Ebay and build your own.

Im surprised you say the high gains sound terrible!!!  On mine they beat nearly every guitarport simulation I have and I thought it sounded great!

These are supposed to be great guitars:

although its a neck humbucker, rather than singlecoil.

Another good one is the Cort GT250.  My godson has one and I was really impressed by the quality of it. We swapped out the pickups and it sounds great.  Another thing to look for is an older PRS EG as they seem to go for around $900-1000, or possibly a CE (though they are now going for more than $1100).  Don't look at the EG SE as that is a Korean guitar and is not the same thing at all.

there's no chance of getting a CE here for £500.

That strat looks so nice! The pewter colour is good! I want one of those to BKP-ify now

To reply to the original question, I think that its best to go try stuff for yourself, as all guitarists like different things! Those freeway classics look really nice though.

I've got a Fender Highway 1 Strat.  It's a made in the US strat but with a thin finish to keep the costs down.  I love the neck for the shape and its finish which is very smooth.  It's great acoustically but sounded thin until I put some Mother's Milks in it the other day.

It comes with 3 single coils in it but under the scratch plate it's routed out for H/S/S.  Trad. Arr. bridge and tram.  They come in a £450ish.

+1 for the Godin Freeway. Parts are made in Canada then assembled in the States, which is how they keep their prices down. Definitely worth checking out.  :)
