At least ( presumably) yours actually lives within 20 miles of his constituancy . The 'Local ' politicians round here would have to use 'Sat Nav' to find their ward. :?

Yes, to be fair he grew up in Streatham and still lives here.
The Tory and Lib Dem candidates are originally from other parts of the country but they do at least live south of the river. I think!
Here's our Labour chap getting down with some local recording artists, innit ("What kind of tip is this one?"):

I see what you mean.
But why was the chap on his left carrying a suspiciously un-boxed 'second hand ' DVD player under his arm. ? Had they interviewed him 'at work' ?

To quote that bloke in House of Cards:
"You might well think that. I couldn't possibly comment."

Quite right too Philly : :)
'Super Nanny' says I've got to go sit on the 'Naughty step' ...
No rusks for Desmond tonight . :?

Good Morning Gents,
I take it most of you are in the UK? Quite funny videos. I am in Atanta Ga. USA, people seem quite full of themselves when it comes to good natured humor that has anything to do with race.

That is an interesting perspective, and reminds me that I would like to think ( as on this forum ) - we don't mind scoring a deliberate 'Home goal' to emphasise that the preceding banter was in good spirit. In that first clip of Douglas the Lawyer, I can well imagine that the police in the audience laughed the loudest at the end 'reveal' - and " those of his Hue" - laughing throughout, at the dichotomy in the man, thus ( by implication ) that part within themselves / ourselves - whichever racial / political 'fence' we find ourselves looking ( somewhat cautiously) over. How the character is caught so uncomfortably - between wanting to overcome cross cultural prejudice, yet manifesting it ( via his carefully chosen wife's lineage ) - most of it himself.
That tendency , to attempt dissolution of predudice, or any perceived 'guilt' within ourselves - only serving to remind us that we had to first have build it, to laterly make great show on knocking it down.
On BBC television recently 'Live from the Apollo ' there was a nice, gentle - but- effective stand up routine by a second generation Iranian immigrant by the name of Shappi Khorsandi. A different angle on things, but the spirit being somewhat similar. Neither side of the equation came out particularly well - and that was of course both it's beauty and victory.
I'm an not saying that humour should either favour, or studiously avoid the potential cultural divides, but as Mel Brooks always believed, you score the goals against yourself on your terms, leaving potential verbal aggressors, quite weaponless.
I suppose there is first and foremost a very British(?) tradition / tendency of habitually taking the p**s out of ourselves. It's almost masochistic, but it seems to 'fit' us somehow.

Excellent post Derek :)
I think this sketch from Goodness Gracious Me sums up the point perfectly,

Post removed due ( upon reflection ) to it being made so totally and gloriously redundant by Plexi Ken's last post. :D

That was a gem I'd not seen , in that excellent series. Not only did I weep laughing at that, but as you quite rightly said , it sums up the point Perfectly
Thanks for that Ken. :D

I love these clips, as well as the understated UK humor. In the states we are relegated quite often to old re-runs of Never the Twain, Keeping Up Appearances, Are you Being Served... I love Hyacinth though. I think she was a Grammar teacher of mine in early primary school. We also just had a crazy cross dressing guy on late night cable. Eddie Izzard, now that is a straight up crazy guy. Loved his humor context of history.
Peace,
Softail

Hey, nothing wrong with those! Do they also show Terry & June?

It does sound like you might be being 'force fed' at least some of the less subtle stuff ( Never the Twain , Are you being served ) - but I am gratified to hear ( as a human being, not just as a U.K. resident ) that you enjoy the under stated aspects.
From your side of the Atlantic, my own favourite 'Wit' - and the master of grossly understating understatement - is Steven Wright. The man who so rightly once described himself as " A peripheral visionary" . Not everyone's cup of tea , but he tickles the imagination so delightfully . A true gem.
