Title: Bareknuckle Warpigs options help ?
Post by: Bodom_600 on March 28, 2010, 01:05:17 PM
Hey Guys, im new to bareknuckles and have always used EMGs, however after looking for a more high gain pickup i believe that Bareknuckle warpigs are the way to go. Coming from australia there are not many bareknuckles over hear so having not much experience, i am just going by what people have said. Ive been looking on the online shop and saw all the options to choose from. I want to buy bareknuckle warpigs Calibrated Covered Set, however am having troube choosing all the options.

Could someone please who has more experience in this area be able to help me out. I have no idea about spacing, leg, conductor or bridge magnet at all, so if someone could please inform me about these and how choosing these could inporve the song that would be great, Thanks Guys

Josh

Welcome to the forum!  :D

I can't tell you anything useful about Warpigs sound-wise, but in terms of spacing, leg length, 2- or 4-conductor, could you tell us what type of guitar they're going in?

Welcome too.  If you can also tell us what music you like and what sound you are after, that would help too.  There are a couple of different types of Warpig around, as Tim will also make them with a ceramic magnet, rather than alnico.  This tightens up the bottom end, but if you are after a Black Sabbath sound you wouldn't want that.  If on the other side you use a dropped tuning or want a modern heavy tone, then the ceramic magnet might suit.

hi! i'm a great Warpig fan (i've got a bridge warpig in 3 guitars... 2 alnico and 1 ceramic), and basically agree with Phil King (a tighter low end is not the only difference, ceramic pig has also more presence on highs), but my question is: are you sure you want warpigs? don't think in mere terms of output, it doesn't always work with BKPs! you could prefer Painkillers, for example, even if they've got a whole Duncan 59 less in terms of DCR!

what kind of metal tone (i assume you play metal...) are you after? CoB are a nice guess, if your nick doesn't lie... :)
what guitar are you planning to put the pigs into?
what EMGs are you used to?

active pickups tend to give their sound to whatever instrument, passives are much more sensible to the acoustic character of a guitar, and BKPs are VERY sensible, even the most powerful ones.

Hey Guys, you have all been very helpfull, and thanks heaps for replying to my question. I will be putting it in a esp ec1000, so the eclipse. It will be in a dropped tune most likely drop B and drop A and drop A#. thanks phil for mentionin and using the black sabbath example that really laided it out for me, so hearing that i would like the cermatic as i want a tight high gain sound. Ive got a esp h1001 with emg active pickups 81   85, and a alexi 600se with a passive hz4 in it, which was a great guess by dheim. So it will all be going into a ec1000 which i will use in dropped tunning which i will mostly play parkway drive, i killed the prom queen and metalcore stuff like those bands which have a tight distrotion. About the warpigs and painkillers, im not 2 sure, ive heard great things about both but are kinda heading over to the warpigs. As i havent played many im, planning on buying them and playing with them for a good year, i reckon the only way to truely appreciate the sound is just to go all out get them and stick with them till u find wat u want.

so I hope this all helps guys

cheers Josh

it helps a lot!
i can start telling you not to buy painkillers on the eclipse... i wasn't too happy with them (that by the way sound great in an Ibanez S) in my EC1000!
I'm sending them back to have them rewound as a ceramic Nailbomb (bridge) and a Cold Sweat (neck)... the eclipse is a strange sounding guitar, in my opinion, not easy to find a set that really brings her to life... (note that i didn't like how it sounded with the PK but it could be me!)
I'm playing the c-bomb card, but to play safe i'd say Cold Sweats. don't be fooled by the lowish DCR value, CS are perfect to achieve tight and sharp sounds from "dark" guitars, specially in drop tunings! a C-Pig could be an overkill but for sure it will sound massive!

Please let us know how the C-pigs work out in the Eclipse. I have similar plans and I'm very curious how you like them...
