Downloaded it this morning (legally of course ) and it's amazing! Easily as good as their last. Slightly different, but you can still tell it's The Darkness. It's got some very Queen-esque moments too. Really, really good album. People can slag off their dress sense etc but they can still write bloody good songs! I have to admit that when I first heard the title track I was disappointed but the good news is that it's by far the weakest track on the album (and it's growing on me - there's a joke in there somewhere). This one's going to be on repeat for quite a while.

I saw the Darkness a couple of years back at Glastonbury. They were the opening act on the Friday morning.
They were fantastic! Justin was running round playing air drums. People were cracking up laughing not knowing what to make of them.

Great band, love Permission to Land. New album is released tomorrow. I will get it then. :)
-
i liked the first album. I've been a little disappointed with the single, but if you say it's the worst song on the album...
-
I've had a chance to listen to the new album from these guys out on monday (One way ticket...), and I can confirm that it is awesome!
The first single theyve put out from it doesn't really do it justice, the album's more album orientated than single orientated like the last one. If the first album was more AC/DC, this one's more 70s and 80s hard rock, and lots of other crazy influences. Track 3 - "Is it just me?" is my predicted big hit of next year, it's fantastic, kindof reminds me of 'Since You've Been Gone' by Rainbow, in the way that it's got a great anthemic chorus and very guitar based (plus the solo in it is great).
Like the first album "Permission To Land", it's full of fun songs, but a lot more creative and original. I think I might like this album more than the first one, which surprised me as to be honest I wasn't expecting much from this album. If you're into classic rock branching out further than AC/DC style stuff, such as more different 70's/80's style stuff like Van Halen, Dokken, Aerosmith, Status Quo, Queen (here I'm talking about Brian May style harmonies as opposed to any Freddie Mercury impressions...), this is an album for you. The Darkness have really gone further in this album in terms of creativity and developing their own unique style, I really want to get tickets to see them now in February!
The guitar sounds on this album are also really cool, miles ahead of anything any modern bands have! There's a lot of different sounds like sitars and wierd effects, and also there's more instruments like keys featured on the album too.

Well the song "One way ticket.." was shitee, so I am not going to spend money on it
-
Any new Christmas songs on that disc?
I'm looking forward to the videos, those always crack me up. :)

the title is brilliant, very spinal tap
-
Bah, it aint bad - Won't make its way into my favourites though. i'll be over it completely in a week - just like the last one...
-
What always gets me about the darkness is that people say they are like AC/DC. I love AC/DC but think the darkness are horrible. It's just everything I hated about Queen but without any of their good points. Fair play that they don't care what other people think, but it really isn't my thing - 80's rock is gone, but 80's thrash is in.
-
people say they are like AC/DC
These people ever heard AC/DC?

Got it today. Played it 4x. Love it. Full review to follow.

:D Yer sounds great lots of Queen type overtones. The second half of the albums better than the 1st half, personnal fav track. "Bald" As for 80`s metal being gone The Darkness would it appears disagree as for 80`s trash being in, sorry i think 80`s thrash killed metal. 80`s thrash, toneless, tasteless, tacky & gone [ thank the lord ]
:D 8)

you couldn't be more wrong about thrash being gone. Trivium are the most obvious example of thrash being back. Anthrax and Slayer both are enjoying increased popularity. It was more hair metal that killed off the rock scene in the early nineties which paved the way for Nirvana being so popular. The reason why Bon Jovi still sell loads of records is because they have progressed beyond living on a prayer etc.
As for thrash being tacky, toneless and tasteless compare Metallica's Fade To Black with any of the songs by bands like Motley Crue, Skid Row and lets not forget Warrant etc and I think we'll agree that musically and lyrically thrash was more creative. I'll agree that Slayer's lyrics always have been tasteless, but most of the thrash acts evolved beyond going on about satan etc.

The new Darkness CD kicks ass!
got it today and i'm lovin it.

I like a lot of 80s thrash metal, and I wouldn't consider Trivium to be grouped with that genre, they're more 'cookie monster metal'. I give them credit where credit is due for trying to shred, but when I listen to their solos it just sounds like they're doing it for the sake of being able to say they can shred - the solos I heard when listening to them were all naff.
but it really isn't my thing - 80's rock is gone, but 80's thrash is in.
last time I checked, music didn't have to be the 'in thing' for people to enjoy listening to it :?
-
what I mean is that Trivium are obviously into their thrash, and it shows more than most bands out there. thats without them wearing the t-shirts. i've seen them live but wasn't really that impressed, although they are still very young and hopefully will start to justify the hype. sorry for going off topic!
i just bought the new issue of guitarist magazine today and its got Justin and Dan in it. not read the interview, but Justin's Ibanez looks very similar to the one Steve Vai used around the time of Passion and Warfare (the running colours one that looks like an artists palette), although its got some nice differences. All the manufacturers are clearly jumping over themselves to get Justin to endorse their products - can't say I blame him.
-
i like the darkness, megadeth and trivium (although their soloing sucks)
guess i;m just "special"
-
i'd probably like the darkness if it wasn't for their arrogance like they are the best thing since sliced bread. i can appreciate that they have talent, but you'd think they were the best guitarists on the planet from the way they talk. i'll give that interview a read and see if i like them anymore after that.

I agree. I also noticed most of the "metal" nowadays has shitee vocals. Its all BLARARLARLATLGHAHAHAH then pretty choirboy singing! I hate it! Give me the vocals of Megadeth/Death Angel/Vio-Lence/Any other good old thrash band anyday, just none of the new cr@p!
I sound really old (I'm only 17!) but music seems to have really gone badly, badly downhill, it seems the only good bands are older ones now! ARRGHH I need a band to get good music into the ears of the youth  I wont stand for any of this nu-metal pap!
-
"nu metal" dont mention those words around me. that was just a stopgap genre as far as i am concerned. the stuff now blends in what Agnostic Front were doing in the early nineties hence the shouting. it was always known as crossover back then but now has its own naff name "metalcore" and "mathcore" like WTF is that kind of name about. My personal hate is when the singer goes between the death metal roar and singing as i'd rather they just stuck with one thing although Killswitch Engage do it better than most.
-
Another thing I absolutely hate is indie, but I wont even get started on that!
Anyway, I might download a couple of the new Darkness songs to see if "One Way Ticket" was just THE cr@p song on the album..
-

I don't mind the pretty choir boy bits every so often, but yep, the BLARGAHABA;ALABA\AHAHARHAH bits totally suck, and its just annoying. Ever heard Atreyu??!?! Whats up with his voice?!?!?! When yu edit it out and just leave choir boy, its actually not that bad  ...... on second thought - its really is! its just not AS bad.

Meh the style of choirboy singing is cr@p! What happened to good old gritty voices?!

Just out of interest - have they learned to play properly yet?
Since when has that been a prerequisite for rockstardom? ;)
Can't say I really understand The Darkness -- they do all this self-consciously cheezy stuff and then seem like they're trying to act serious (as opposed to sending up people whoa re too serious) at the same time. I mean: which is it? Ah well, I shouldn't knock a formula that rakes in far more cash than anything I'm likely to do!
Never much got on with those cookie monster metal oooooowargh vocals either. I mean, dude  put some fibre in your diet. Seriously ....

I read an interesting quote today about is apparently why the darkness hate the NME, although I sourced it from popbitch so it probably isn't true lol. apparently a positive review of one of their earlier gigs was doctored so it came across negative even though the reviewer was a friend of theirs. like i said it was popbitch so its just a rumour so might not be true!
