Title: Anyone heard of these amps?
Post by: horsehead on March 30, 2010, 01:55:47 PM
http://www.jacksonampworks.com/products/amplifiers/britain/ (http://www.jacksonampworks.com/products/amplifiers/britain/)

I've just been watching the Robbie McIntosh video (the man is a legend!) where he's playing their new British amp...sounds ace, like acros between a dumble & vox

Is Lee Jackson still making amps as well?

Very interesting amps.

A similar sized/priced amp as the Britain 2.0 would be the Komet 19.

I don't like that they say they shed 18 lbs as if that's a bonus. That probably means they are using smaller trannies. Good valve amps are heavy.

Thanks for the kind words guys! I was browsing here and found a post that mentioned the Britain so I thought I'd register and introduce myself. I am Brad Jackson the owner of Jackson Ampworks and the Britain 2.0 is my creation. Robbie is a tremendous player and a super nice guy as well and we are very pleased to have him using/endorsing our amps.

One quick response to Denim n Leather. The 18lb drop in weight did not come from the transformers. It came from a smaller chassis, smaller cabinet and switching from Stainless Steel chassis to Aluminum. The transformers are the same size as they have always been and are in fact over-sized for the job they are doing.

Again thanks for the kind words guys! This is a great forum and I look forward to spending more time here in the future.

All the best,

Brad it's nice to see you on here...WELCOME!

If your amps are as good as they sound (& that's what matters!) then you won't have any problems selling them!
Are you planning to sell them over here in England?

Thanks for the encouragement! I ship anywhere in the world. Also I think I'm the first guy to include an external 120/240V switch on the back panel so voltage is never a problem. :)

Sorry to burst your bubble but my Sound City amp from 1974 has that feature (though rather than a switch it has a removeable contacter to select the various input voltages. This would have been better served by a rotary switch but given the fact that the travel of the pots doesn't match up to the scale on the knobs they weren't neccessarily motivated by ease of use anyway...)

Just goes to show that innovation sometimes gets overlooked far too easily.

But anyway it's great to have you here at the forum and I hope you enjoy the atmosphere.

Thanks for the direct reply.

Please get your amps into Ultrasound in NYC so I can shoot it out against the Komet 19, which is at the top of my 'next purchase' list.

Are you in NY? Which do you think is the better shop? Rudy's or Ultrasound?
Title: Re: Anyone heard of these amps?
Post by: Denim n Leather on March 31, 2010, 04:16:10 PM
Yeah, I'm a NY'er.

I would strongly recommend you talk to Rudy and Ken. They both have different things to offer. I've used Rudy's for a lot of my high end accessories (like Lehle switchers) and some pedals, but never bought and amp or guitar there. Their shop has a great reputation and a lot of snob appeal. The only guy I do business with at Rudy's is Ariel; he's nice enough but the majority of the staff can be a bit hard to take from a consumer standpoint.

I've been jamming at Ultrasound for over a decade and if it wasn't for them I would never have had real world experience with high end/hand made amplifiers. Ultra has all of the amps they carry arranged in rehearsal rooms so that you can really put the amp through the rigors of a gig like situation. They are not exactly friendly unless your cc is out on the table at all times, if you know what I mean.

For my dollar, I would go to Ultra 10:1 over Rudy's. It's debatable about which shop has more traffic, but if you look at Ultrasound's adverts you can see they carry a lot of high end amplifiers.

You're very welcome.

Oh, and FYI -- you really should have more clarification on how you cut the weight down on that amp. I showed it to a couple of friends of mine that also own high end amps (we own Splawn, Bumbox, Soldano, Rivera, etc between us) and they all came to the same conclusion about the trannies on their own.

I have an old JMI Vox AC10 with a similar function, thankfully at some point it was fixed at the correct voltage and the dial removed to prevent people such as myself with "ooo shiny button" reflexes from blowing the thing up

More on topic thats a cracking looking amp!

You know you're right! I remember that Marshall had the kind where you pulled a pin and it popped out. I stand corrected! Still mine is somewhat more elegant. ;)

No doubt. :)

Though it might be worth considering a rotary selector so that you could tap the transformer at several different points so that it could be touted as the perfect tool for a touring musician what with being compact and light enough to carry comfortably (I know the Sound City certainly isn't- its being wider than my stairs is a bit of a dampener on its auditory loveliness) and being able to account for different mains voltages the world over.

Perhaps it might be placed as an optional extra as I am aware that good trannies cost money but I'm sure it could find you some extra niche in the market.

As it is now, there is a switch for 120 or 240. I chose those numbers so that if you're in a place that uses 220, 230 or 240 you're always safe. Better to be slightly under voltage than over and 240 gives that to you.

I'm afraid I'm somewhat of a pleb when it comes to electronics.

Just having a nose around your website Brad, what are the other two listed amps going to be like? I imagine the Union Jack will be another British flavoured model, what about the atlantic?

The Atlantic has and will continue to be my version of a Trainwreck...sort of a tribute to Ken Fischer. Very American sounding cleans with very aggressive British overdrive. Version 2.0 will introduce a feature that has not been seen before in a tube amp. Shhhh.... ;)

The Union Jack is getting a complete overhaul. Nothing will be the same except for the name. It's going to be my first Master Volume amp with a very useful and sophisticated overdrive tone. Not quite as compressed as the Dumble overdrive but definitely not a Marshall type of overdrive either.

Think of it this way. The Atlantic is like wearing jeans and a t-shirt. The Union Jack is like wearing a tux. They are both clothes but each have a very different attitude. :)

Hi Jackson

Noticed this thread today @work but didn't have much time, just had a look at your site right now, and if I may give you some educated advice (been working in web programming for the past five years now), the text color (#777777) is _way_ too dark for a black background. I managed to read it after I disabled this css rule, but only because 1/ I knew how to do so (ask yourself how many of your visitor will...), and 2/ I really was interested enough. Making this change permanent on your site is a 2 minutes job, so if you care about having your texts read - that is, if you care about selling your products - you know what you have to do.

PS: Send me a PM if you want detailed technical instructions - it's *really* a very simple thing to do.

nice amps and an elegant way of reducing weight.

talking of Trainwreck amps, here's an amp I built based on a 'Wreck, but with a fair few deviations (it's SE for a start)...

Yeps, that's better - still too dark given the texts length IMHO (I'd just remove this style as far as I'm concerned and leave it defaulting to #B9B9B9 - as defined in 'body'), but definitly better.
