Hey guys! How are you all???
I'm going to make a surgery on my shoulder this friday... I got "S.L.A.P. lesion", I don't know much about what is it, but it's kinda like the biceps have made a cut in the ligament of the shoulder... It'll need to be nailed to the bone again...
I'm not sure how explain what is it, but it's something like this:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SLAP_tear
The Labroum has a cut on it...
All doctors are saying it's a simple surgery and I'll be back 100%, so I'm trying not to worry much...
This is a old lesion, first pain came in June... Went in 2 doctors that help NOTHING and them went in a super-specialist, paid big money and have the problem discovered... I'm not sure if I'll play Rugby again, if I do, I'll change the position to Flanker or Eightman... But I'm thinking in only come back if I discover that I really good at it, what I doubt completely...
That's it, thought that somebody perhaps would like to know...
Perhaps I'll be a little away from a while, but nothing serious going on...
Cheers

Best of luck Fernando-I am sure it'll go well. I won't say "pics or it didn't happen".
-
Hey fernandybaby, you'll be fine but best of luck anyway!
Apendectomy, plate and screws put in ankle, plate and screws taken out of ankle, last two done conscious (epidurals) all still present, correct and fully functional, no big deal - sounds like yours is a similar sort of level of procedure. You'll breeze through.
The maybe not playing rugby again, that sucks; fingers crossed for light at the end of the physio tunnel!
-
Hope it all goes well, Fernando!
Has it been giving you much pain/trouble up until now?
-
Good luck mate, hope it all goes well......... and Flanker is the best position on the field anyway, so it could be a good move. Remember it's English tradition that the one on the blind side is a dirty cheating bar-steward and we expect the same of those in Brazil.
-
Good luck and hope you'll be back 100% and playing again in no time!
-
Hope it goes well buddy!
-
Good luck mate!

Sorry to hear you're pretty much out of rugby. :( I'm sure you'll make a speedy recovery, and best of luck with the operation. What position did you play? I always preferred prop, but I kinda grew too tall for that, which is a shame - I disliked playing 2nd row intensely! Mrs Roo made me stop playing before we got married because I kept getting injured. Hey, I just love the rucks and mauls, what can I say. But believe me, there is also life after Rugby - just remember to change your diet now you've stopped playing - or take up some other exercise ;)
Best of luck,
Roo

Good luck Fernando - sometimes the body is stronger after healing, so don't rule out anything yet.
-
Best wishes that all goes well Fernando you young gentleman you..
-
good luck :)

Hey guys, thank you all for the kind words :D
The surgery is a "arthroscopy", not sure how explain what it is... They won't make a big cut, will use something like a endoscope and will "nail" the ligament to the bone...
I used to play as Loosehead Prop, the injury is on the right shoulder, that's why I think I may change the position... Props have a lot stress on shoulders...
I'm not tall to play on 2nd row and beside I've some speed when I'm trainning regulary and thinner, I'm not sure if I'm the right guy to play on backs.
Seems like I'll need to be Nº7 as I think rugby players should have a gentleman behavior, to show footballers the difference between men and kids  This doesn't mean that I play "softly", I just don't need to punch, kick or step over others players to be effective...
PhillyQ, don't have pain on it often, as I've made some physical therapy and I'm not using the right arm a lot since January... But if I do anything that used strenght, it burns... sometimes, after small effords, the muscles get painfull, something alike they're trying to compensate the instability...
-

I'm from Rugby Town, we play properly (plenty of puching and kicking  ). I wasn't fast enough to be on the open side as you need to be a lot quicker. On the blind side, you've got to be good at tackling.
I've had an athorscapy on both my knees at the same time. Nothing to worry about really you'll be fine in no time, I went shopping the next day (and was then back in hospital the day after as I'd blow my stiches and my knee was full of blood )

Hope it goes well for you

Good luck Fernando - sometimes the body is stronger after healing, so don't rule out anything yet.
I second that statement. I have twice recovered from long standing / chronic injuries - and found that the area(s) of the body concerned were much stronger and now injury free , after the event. Also , I have seen athletes undergo quite involved ( and initially very delicate ) surgery - then go on to break new records some months later.
Mainly; I wanted to say sorry for joining this thread rather late - and wish you all the best for an effective recovery. So often, being forced to stop and address an issue like this , is a blessing in disguise, the only way forward.
I wish you good health . :)
-
Good luck! It should be easy, and arthroscopy means that post operative pain is very little... Get soon back in battle, soldier! :)
-
Good luck, speedy recovery and all that :)
-
The very best of luck with the procedure and I hope you have a speedy and completely successful recovery. Keeping my fingers crossed.
-
Good luck with the op - we'll be thinking of you :D
-
Hey guys! Thank you all for the support! I've been a little stressed and it was very appreciated!
But, there was a problem with the papers from the health care plan (no idea how you call it) and it'll be post-pone a little... Tomorrow I'll know when it will happen!
Thank you all :D
-
You'll be ok, just make sure the surgeon doesn't go anywhere near your special bits. Otherwise we'll have to start calling you Fernanda.

One arm is still good and can punch a lot
To be sure everything will be alright, I'll wear a chastity underweard, made of adamantium
-
Sorry im late to post on this one. Hope that everything goes well and they get you fixed up.

So, tomorrow at 9h20AM I'm getting in the hospital to make the surgery!

Really pleased to hear that the operation went well. Best wishes for a speedy recuperation.

The power of speech will return, but slowly!
-
Still got both testicles?
-
nice one fella, hope you're still smiling when the anaesthetic wears off!
I'd also like to say "garganta inflamada" and "duas fatias de tosta com fiambre e queijo" which is all the portuguese I know.
-
 Thanks guys!
Had a bad time to sleep... my arm is over my stomach and couldn't breath properly laied, had to go to sofa and be half sit, half laied...
The shoulder isn't with big pain by now, but the medicine haven't gone 100%... It's really cr@p have only the lefty arm to eat, shower, etc... :(
But the most interesting is that the shoulder feels "right" now, even I kinda of feel the Chanell Tunnel to my bone... Think it'll be great when recovered!
I tried to take pics but my camera was uncharged :? That sucks... They wrote "não" (not) on the other shoulder, but I think a movie when I was under morphine would be the best
Shobet: it's all on place and properly working  although I haven't hit any nurse
-
glad to hear it went ok :)
-
Fernando, I was joking about the pics
-

-

I'd say I operate on a steady 47% most of the time.

47% eh? Sounds like you could be the sort of chap who could put a bit of extra zing/commitment into Johnny Mac's band and raise their game a bit - mebbe you should set up an audition??
(Sorry Johnny )

-
I am also pleased you are doing well.. I seems to miss the original posting Fernado, and I am sorry to here you needed to go under the knife at all :(
-
Apologies here also Fernando, as I re-join this rather late. All the very best for your ongoing recovery ! :D
-
Thank you guys! Just came back from the doc: more two weeks with the arm without move... then come back to see how it is...
he told he had to nail all the ligament, it was pretty bad... when the anesthesy worked the arm pop out of place, that explain the pain in the muscles of shoulder...
It's painfull today, as I put the shirt alone and shouldn't raise my arm in no way... doc says it may make the "nails" pop out, so really bad idea...
-
Hasn't he heard of "No more Nails"?. Get well soon Fernando.
-
So, after 5 months after the surgery, I still have pain and can't make all movements of the arm... Went on doctor today and probably I've a fibrosis on the ligament and will have to do another surgery... Will make a MRI next 22th... Lets see...
Pissed off as never been before...
-
That's awful, hope it goes better for you next time!
-
Really sorry to hear that Fernando. Keeping my fingers crossed that the MRI offers up the correct diagnosis and you can get everything sorted.
-
Sorry to hear that...
I used to have terrible issues with my sight and have had 6 operations to restore it but when it's all over you forget 99% of all the cr@p it took to get there.
Keep smiling

I'm very sorry to hear about your ongoing frustration and dis-comfort Fernando ; but Dave's situation and the way he absolutely owned it eventually - is a great great reminder that when your shoulder is 'fixed' you will still have many strong years ahead of you. Afghan's message being all the more poignant, as we think of him as the all conquering, good natured chap that would not have his life's narrative tainted by such a thing.
On a much lesser note, I had a long spell of debilitating rotator cuff issues in one of my shoulders. but the eventual re-hab changed the way I trained and introduced me to new information / ideas that transformed my 'sport' for the better. I trust that will you eventually find the silver lining to your current cloud - and meanwhile, enjoy exploring all of life's other pleasures and distractions whilst it heals. If nothing else, it's a great time to pull up a pile of books / surf the net - and seek higher knowledge of your existing hobbies. Remember that even Bruce Lee was confined to a hospital bed for a long time with serious back injuries, before he performed his most notable 'action' film work - and during which time he also researched / compiled greater insights into his own craft.
All the very best ! :)

 THANK YOU...
I have to say that due to the wonderful nature of the mind to forget, the soul remembers and I feel that after all the trauma I went through it changed me in ways I'm very grateful for...
I hated every minute of losing my sight at 14 and the painful process of recovering it but... NOW LOOKING BACK ... I wouldn't change a thing.
Sounds like hollow bullsh1t but it's the truth.
-
sorry to hear that, fernando :(
glad you're better now, dave.
-
me too
-
Thanks for the words guys... Being a though time!
Hey Dave, nice to hear your words, yours was much more serious and in a much more dificult time (teenager) but you did it! I'm start to getting the confidence back!
I'm starting thinking that I shall show my body how he is supposed to work... I'm planning even get back to Rugby, what I was almost totally given away...
It is boring, it is painfull, you cannot use your arm for 2 months or so properly (on the first even move you can't)... But I'll do it and it will get fine! I'll work even harder on Physical Therapy!
Thanks again guys! :D
-
I'm sure you'll be returning to Rugby in the longer term ; as I was once told by my ( obviously non- sporting ) Doctor to "stop weightlifting for good - and buy a treadmill ". I ignored him, took a few months to rest / gently recover - and subsequently went on to break new personal records later that year. As you said, I just had to understand " how to make it work properly " - and in doing so, realise the flaw in my 'pressing' technique that had left me open to injury in the first place. Be patient with the physical therapy - and remember that even a year or two out of Rugby is nothing compared to decades of play if you get this bit right.
I found it was definately a case of things eventually being much better after, than before. Get your other hobbies / stuff done now, as the Rugby with take up alot of your time in the future !
