As the title says!
Last minute gig trip with Mrs Twinfan to see Davy Knowles in Manchester last night. He played to an audience smaller than my last 'DC gig :o
The guy plays how I think I play in my head, and how I wish I could play in real life. Just incredible feel, tone and passion. Joe B, to me, feels staged and that everything is well thought out and planned. Davy seems to fly by the seat of his pants loving every minute. I like that :D
If you get the chance, go and see him. If there's any justice in the world, this guy is going to be BIG!

Never heard of him - will check it out when I get home tonight.
I'm now waiting for Afghan Dave to make a suitably crude response about the name of the band!
-
I've heard of him, but this is the first time I've heard him. If that's typical of his stuff, I want to hear more!! :D
(.... and I've just spent another half hour watching clips on YouTube)
Savage, rockin' and fiery, not blues purist bollocks (no offence, blues purists  ). Good singer too.
And I like his taste in guitars!
-
That's got my juices flowing for an extended youtube session tonight!
I'm off to see Matt Schofield on the 18th, maybe I'll look out for this guy to see if he is playing anywhere near my town!
-
Excellent, reminds me a bit of Jeff Healey but not sure why :?
-
His singing voice is fantastic, and he reminds me a bit of a young Gary Moore in his playing style. Well, well worth getting his albums and catching up on his live act if you can.
-
I bought an album some months back and have been watching out for him. As you say Dave, he is going to get big.
-
great, his singing is very good, perfect for this style and what a fat guitar sound.young and beatiful too, call it good karma.I used to watch a band called jinn house in the sussex area, the guitar player whilst mature(mark simpkins)
was one of the best players i've ever seen, and a good raunchy pub is for me the best venue for real no nonsense
talent, nothing to hide behind. As for bonamassa, i hear where your comin' from but he's still a genius ,even when he was a kid. chris duarte is the one i'd like to see though, no 1 bluesman for me!
-
Just watched a bunch of clips. Awesome. They are playing in London tomorrow night and I can't make it :x
Got some PRS GAS after watching the clip you posted Dave!
-
Didn't like the clip posted here, but saw others that I thought it was very nice "Almost Cut My Hair" with Gov't Mule and "Saving myself" on resonator...
-
Really like that - great playing and singing.
I suspect Joe B was more like Davy K 10-15 years ago before he made it big. With bigger venues and backers (and money!) perhaps he now has to stage more of his show. I hope Davy K can maintain that freshness/raw energy/edge (which I love in a guitarist) when he is not so 'hungry' - Joe B is not alone, I can think of loads of guitarists who haven't been able to.
-
I'm a big Bonamassa fan, but when I first heard Davy Knowles a few months back I was blown away. The guy is almost irritatingly talented, and like TF says, if there's any justice he'll be very, very successful.
I'd like to see him and Bonamassa jam - what d'you reckon? :D
-
Not sure JB would be that good improvising, DK would blow him away ;)
-
I'm just about to turn 22 and unless i spend 10 years jamming in the next 2 days, i've got some catching up to do.
His youtube clips are amazing, and strangely (when compared to watching young players shred) very inspiring because he's having so much fun.
my 0.02p on the JB vs DK mini debate.....I prefer JB when he's progging it up, DK is a more natural blueser IMO, YMMV etc.
-

I'm sure as Joe B was jamming with people like Danny Gatton when he was 12 he could manage just a little bit of improvisation :).
-
Fair point! He doesn't seem to do much any more though?
-
Didn't he jam with Clapton on his RAH DVD?
-

I agree, I don't think we should cast any aspersions over Joe B's ability to improvise!
Most blues-based players can jam till the cows come home if you give them some hackneyed chord progression - even I can, for $%'s sake! (I'm not saying it would be good to listen to... ) :P
Speaking of Mr B, Sandi Thom was on BBC Breakfast this morning and apparently he's made a guest appearance on her new album.

Well, that may mean at least one track on her new album is listenable, as long as they don't bury Joe in the mix ;-)

She described the whole album as "blues rock" (yeah, I didn't believe it either). Then she sang her single - live on the BBC Breakfast sofa - and I must admit it wasn't half bad.
Apparently she spent a couple of weeks last year acting as the singer in Bonamassa's band because he lost his voice.
-
Just had a listen to the song with JB on it (here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h2-bGQMQUbA) and I'll concede that it's actually good.
She's got a pretty good bluesy voice, and if the rest of the album sounds like that she'll be onto a good thing.
There is some stuff on Youtube of her singing with Bonamassa too, worth a look if you've some time to kill!
-
It's alright, isn't it?
Must admit I got distracted by all the clips of Bonamassa playing with Glenn Hughes....
-
Not sure, I think both sings very good, but to mch refined... I like things with some raw power on it
-
I saw his album in HMV, and as i had a £20 voucher in me pocket, I picked it up. Put it on in the car on the way back, and so far (up to track 6), it's great! Funnily enough, I thought that he looked familiar-- he popped into the studio a few weeks ago to pick up a guitar :)
Love the tones, the songs are great-- i much prefer this album to JB's Black Rock, that just misses the mark for me, both in sound and the songs themselves.
Is unfortunately giving me wildly unreasonable PRS GAS though!!

She was supporting Bonamassa when Matt, Twin and myself saw him in Llandudno last year. All I can remember from her set is camel toe.
-
Well at least you remember something.
-
That's all I can remember too!
Oh, and Matt and Shobet dying of laughter
-
That face wasn't from laughter...
-
-
I'm late to this party but on listening to some of his stuff on you tube I've just, bought both CD's (Well downloads) on Amazon.
Cracking stuff.
-
Just found out that Joe B is seeing Sandi Thom, hence the collaboration on the album.
Looks like he liked the camel toe as much as Shobet and Matt did! :o
-
I predict it won't last. But cool couple, kind of.
-
you're so charitable, philly.
-
Well, call me a cynic but it's showbiz, innit. They're always more in love with themselves than anyone else. :P
(Maybe applies a bit less to musicians than actors, models, TV presenters etc, to be fair. But then they also have the temptations of "The Road" to deal with....)
-
i was only joking. i just read your post and laughed. Even the "damned with faint praise" bit at the end.
-
I'd heard he was seeing Sandy Toksvig - I think they'd go very well together as long as they NEVER REPRODUCE.
-

I don't think there's much danger of reproduction with Sandi Toksvig. Unless a turkey baster is involved....
As an experiment, Joe B should get together with Rumer Willis. Their kids would have the biggest chins on earth.
-
Just listened to this for this first time, hate the vocals, so had to skip through to find parts with just the band. Good playing fo' sho'. Totally empty at the solo, could really do with a bassist that is happy to sit on a groove that fills things out rather than the busy stuff he's doing, or another guitar or organ player, but yeah, the guy can certainly play.
I'm a bit blase to that type of playing though, I have to say, I want blues players to sound like everything's about to go tits up and all the gears gonna break, a la SRV. So was never likely to praise it.

Or Minnie Driver! The resulting offspring would look like John Merrick.

C'mon man, it sits in the same vein as John Mayer, singing to get teenage girls excited.
-
Meh... another good blues/rock guitarist with an uninspiring voice. It's good, but boring! *continues to listen to Mike Pattons Mondo Cane*
:guitar4:
-
Whatever happened to Jonny Lang? Now he could sing!
-
I really liked his first album - not much after that, though.
-

He found religion and got into gospel stuff - still has a great voice and looks like Bart Simpson though
-
singing to get teenage girls excited.
It's dirty work, but someones got to do it PDT_007
