Title: Alder vs Mahogany/ Solid vs Thinline
Post by: thisisnickpaige on April 09, 2010, 04:53:32 PM
Okay still insearch of a second tele, i may be getting that maple capped maple neck but need a body.  I have an alder tele so im wondering what a mahogany tele would sound like and if it would be that much warmer that it'd be worth the price? And what do you think would be warmer sounding a solid or a thinline? Trying to get a warm tele to match my bright tele. Let me know! =) thanks y'all! Cheers and God bless- Nicholas A. Paige

PS also what about a T-master? Would a mahogany T-Master be brighter or warmer? I heard mass makes brightness but if its mahogany?

From what I gather there isn't a big difference between alder and mahogany, just a small one.

Well, something that isn't big would probably be small. That's what girls always say to me anyway

Theres a HUGE difference. But it also depends on which type of mahogany. People have to be specific with which type of mahog, because the different types have drastic differences in tone. Seriously people.

First is depends on what "warm" really is. Technically I would say basswood because it cuts so much high end. BUT to argue my first statement. Types of mahogany do emphasize a tone of mids, and thus give the illusion of lowend. Thus that illusion creates the illusion of warmth. XD hahaha Illusions creating illusions. Buts its really true.

Think about jazz guitarists. That "Blanket over the cab" tone is suppose to be warm. An easy way to get that is just turn down the treble. Well basswood does cut a ton of high end. :\ haha I bet no one will agree with all this XD

(DON'T USE BASSWOOD, it was for the sake of my statement)

Hmmm I had heard the tele had a prominent midrange (in comparison to strats) so I would not recommend mahogany. I think the midrange of mahogany and the tele body would just be too much.

You could always try Black korina(Im pretty sure its limba or something) or Koa? Black korina is suppose to sound similar to alder I think. Wait I think I was thinking of Poplar when I said that it sounds like alder. OH OH LACE WOOD ahhh I want a lacewood body. It can look so awesome. And its suppose to sound very much like alder. If you REALLY want mahogany, Koa might just be your answer. Flame Koa bodies can be glorious! :D
Koa's midranger is focused slightly higher than mahogany putting closer to the middle.
