Hi all I would just like to stay by saying I've been playing 7 years and this is the first time Im getting new pickups in one of my guitars :O, so I don't know that much about it all, but I know what kind of tone I want so maybe you could give me some of your opinions etc?
I own a PRS 24fret SE Custom so you have an idea what sort of guitar im putting it into (im looking to buy two pickups for the different positions)
The characteristics the pickups must have is tons of controlled distortion, lot of sustain, good harmonics and versitility with a great high end tone, a good clean tone or atleast a warm sounding one.
I play a lot of different styles but I think the best pickups would be ones that sounds menacing but can also sound quite controlled (so one thats heavily distorted and the other to be more controlled in the other position??).
I guess tones Im looking for are from bands such as deftones (dirty dreamy sounding waves of distortion) but also punchy low end and with lead parts to sound great...tone like steve vai for the love of god.
I've looked at c-pigs (the high output and mad distortion and sustain) cold sweat and nailbombs but thought it would be best to ask people what they thought?
Any help is welcome thanks very much!

IMO
Nail Bombs are the best rock bridge pickup made ever.
I like the glassy sound of medium gain single coils in the neck, Mississippi Queen does this well in a 'bucker frame.
-
Id go for a set of Nailbombs as well.
-
when you want both Deftones and Steve Vai in one guitar, you're expecting a miracle
got it? :D

Nailbomb bridge with a Cold Sweat Neck
-
Ahh thanks for the suggestions guys, and yeah after reading the post again It kind of did seem a bit extreme
So what are the main differences between a nailbomb and a warpig? anyone know? would be a great help thanks
I also listened to some of the antag's clips and really liked the coldsweat lead sound
-
What kind of amp do you use?

if you don't mind me hijacking a little, how does the nailbomb sound paired with the MQ? still curious about those :o

Cold Sweat set.
I have a set in my Cu24 (Rosewood neck though) and they kill the HFS/VB set. Plenty of clarity but work great clean or distorted depending on how you play them.

I sent a message to Tim and he recommended a warpig with either a cold sweat or a miracle man so I will probably get that, any idea which position to put the different pickups in?. Sorry I don't really know much about them :(
And if I was to get a coil split system, would that involve drilling a new hole in the guitar for the switch to go and getting a 5way selector?
thanks for help

Nope, you can just get new pots. Buy some push/pull 500k pots and wire the pickups coil taps (aptly named huh?) to the pot's connections. You could do it with a 5 pos switch too, but if you don't already have one then it would be completely unnecessary.
-
My guess would be a warpig in the bridge and the other pickup in the neck.
As for the coil split, all you'd need is a push-pull or push-push type pot on the tone control, and wire it like this:

Hope that helps.

Thanks man thats a big help!
I was thinking of doing that but now Tim has suggested getting either a calibrated WP or calibrated MM so I will probably go for warpigs :). Now I have to just decide if to get ceramics or not but not really sure of the differences?
-
yes, you want a ceramic for that
specially if you have a mesa boogie or something
-
I wish I had one of those :P
