that's Bargain Amp Day! well, i hope it's a bargain anyway :)
i decided i needed an amp with a sweet clean tone for recording. i tried out a Traynor YCV40 in a local shop a while back and thought it had a very good clean tone, and was told at the time the price was reduced to £400. so, i decided to go and have another look. it was sold a few days ago! but he had the 20 watt version, at £299. i plugged in and it sounded ok, but nothing special. then he said, i have the 80 watt model here too. it's been here a while, if you like it i could let it go for £350! original price was around £800! now, an 80 watt 2x12 was somewhat more than i was looking for, but i plugged in, and the clean channel on this thing is really good. and the drive channel was a pleasant surprise. not, perhaps, the most characterful distortion, but entirely usable, and with plenty of gain available if you want it.
so, for £350 i have an 80 watt 2x12 combo! 4 6L6's, 3 12AX7's, all ply contruction, and seriously heavyweight. it has celestion 70/80 speakers, which haven't the best reputation, so i suspect a speaker upgrade would make it sound even better.
quite happy :)

Wow what a bargain! :D I bet your like the cat that got the cream!
80w is a lot of power but that's what you need if you want a a sparkling clean tone, lots of headroom. A compressor in front of it would give you some cool cleans with the mids back off. I notice its got a balanced XLR line out too, handy for recording when you can't mike up cos of noise issues.
It looks nice Blue, Enjoy! 8)

Nice work!

Congratulations - sounds like an excellent bit of "gear acquisition" :D

that's the shame about traynor amps. they're great, sound good, are reliable. but dammnit people won't buy them 'till you knock the price almost halfway down. and they'll be a china made peavey for the same retail as the traynor runs at, simply because it's a peavey. no matter what you tell them.
that said, nice score! do yourself a favor and change the speakers, but otherwise, it's a nice big loud amp. and it loves pedals.
-
Great buy- congratulations. I go back a long way and as far as I am concerned, they have a great name.
-
looks really good mate! hope it sounds good too
-
I used to sell them in the 70's and they are great amps but for some reason people don't look at them that way. It looks like you got a great deal there, though as you say, the speakers might need an upgrade. Look for a set of second hand Celestion Sidewinders for great tones with lots of headroom.

I hear so many good things about them yet never see them? Sounds like you got a bargain, enjoy.

Nice score, I've tried the 40 and the 20 and they were nice, for that price the 80 is a steal, I imagine. I think the 80 is the same as the 40 just with twice the power?

to be fair, in the states and canada (where they're made) they go for a lot less than over here. there they're considered the "poor man's marshall/fender", whereas here they're verging on boutique prices!
I'd take one over a (modern) marshall or fender, though, assuming they were the same price or a bit less.

Agreed. I think the reason you don't see a lot of Traynors used by bands is simply because they don't have the hype factor compared to Marshalls and Fenders. But I'd take a Canadian/American made Traynor amp over any new "big named" amps made in China any day.

Man, just check out the specs of the Traynor YCS90 on the official site, it's such a beauty. Yes, I'd take this over a new Marshall.

i definitely understand how it goes from your side of the pond! i'm located in canada however, and it still feels like the amps aren't taking off like they should be (i'm a dealer!), shame, cause they kick ass!

I think it's because Traynor doesn't have a celebrity playing it yet. Once that happens, I'm sure everyone will want to own one. I'm hoping to get a Traynor amp before this happens, because I know that it is a quality amp. If someone like Muse, or another big-name band starts promoting it, I'm sure the price will jack up.

yeah. i'd certainly take a traynor over a hot rod deluxe or dsl401, no question. problem is here they're quite a bit more expensive (unless you get a bargain like blue did), and you're nearly into higher end stuff.
-
they do have celebrities playing, no one knows of them! Thornley uses traynor, blue rodeo's pedal steel player uses traynor. anyway, enough ranting. nice score on the amp, they're great!
-
can't go wrong at that price, nice score.

Ahh, I see. Celebrity-used, or not, Traynor looks to be a great amp :)

I'd say that was a good price for what it is.
The 70/80 has an extended high end that some love and some hate, I've tried using them with my own builds and I really love the detail and the harmonic content but they're too bright for most applications.. I really dig the G12H30 70th Anniversary though.. I think they're great and reasonably priced for most British type tones.

Eurgh, I don't. I found them really bright and harsh.

i've been fitting in a little time with the amp, getting to know it better. it really is different from anything i've used before! i've always had "british" sound amps, this is very much the "american" sound. the clean channel sparkles and chimes with single coils, and with my Les Paul it has a great piano like tone. when cranked up a bit, you get that stinging blues tone that i've heard on so many records. switch to the drive channel, tele in hand, and it's as if Keef is hiding behind the sofa! but there's loads more gain available, and it can get right up to Mesa type metal tones. and i still haven't plugged any pedals into it, although my compressor and chorus pedals are now sitting in front of it.
it's a very good amp, and i'm really looking forward to learning more
