Title: les paul wiring question

I installed some BKPs (cold sweat set, amazing!) a while ago in my epi les paul and am very happy with them individually, but I think something is wrong when they combine (middle switch position). Essentially it sounds a bit flat with both volumes on full, if I back one off it actually gets louder, but if I then back one off entirely it goes dead.

Is this right? I vaguely remember before that backing off one volume would essentially leave me with just the other pickup, which seems sensible.

Have I arsed up the wiring?

There is an added complication that I got a tech (Matt Ryan in Manchester, top bloke, I don't think this is his fault, but more my original installation) to add a coil split to one of the tone pots which splits both pickups. Like I said I don't think this is related as I can bypass the switch and the problem remains.

Any ideas?

Not sure about the middle position volume problem you're having but there's a couple of ways to wire up a Les Paul - here's a great resource: http://www.dominocs.com/AshBassGuitar/

Basically vintage style wiring will kill output from both pickups when ONE of the volume pots is rolled all the way back. I think to have the volume controls work independently you need to swap the connections on the 2nd and 3rd lugs of each volume pot.
