I got the Guitar Toolkit one that was recommended in here and its so useful. The tuner is excellent. I wonder how much the little interface is for the AmpliTube App?

Did you see that! Ok, how much is my next Gas bill going to be? :)

LOL too much! At least that's what I'd say to myself if asking that question :) More than this device is another good answer... There's some perspective. Probably what a tank of gas costs here, but you'll go further with this.

So, it's a headphone amp that you need to buy an iphone before you can use? For about the same price as a vox amplug or similar. Ok you can get different sounds but I don't see the quality being spectacular and on iphone hardware the latency issues (let alone touchscreen issues) must be horrendous. It's not like you need versatility from a portable device anyway, you just need to hear what you're doing. Plus what if someone calls? I'm not really seeing a use for this :?
There's a market though, people will buy anything if you put an 'i' in front of it...

Truth.
But you can play guitar anywhere!
For which you need a guitar
Introducing
The iGuitar!
Its a plugin guitar for an iPhone
Just attach the neck, body and strings to the iPhone and play guitar wherever you like! No need to take your guitar anywhere, just 99% of one!
Alright I might be being a bit silly, but I'm rather struggling to see the utility of this thing.
-
Another pointless app for the pointless device that is the iPhone!
-
Think I'm going to look for a steinberger clone to go with my iPhone and Amplitube rig for ultimate portability.
I'm starting to like theiPhone but am waiting for the 4th gen one to be launched in a month or two before getting one
Amazed that I've held off so far considering what an apple fanboy I am for their other stuff - especially Aperture for photography
-
I'm quite surprised at the response from people here - I think its great. Sure, you need to have an iPhone, but they're quite a common phone that the majority of phones are copying. In a couple of years you'll find that all phones will have this kind of functionality. I'd buy this if I had an iPhone - I don't have one at the minute as I think they're too big.
If they bring one out for my Samsung Genio, I'll buy it - great rehearsal tool and great fun too with all the various effects to play with.
-
I agree with HTH, as long as the hardware is up to it, it should be great. I use my Micro BR all the time but the amp models are poor, If the iphone ends up better then it will be great.
You could look at it like you need an iphone, but if you already have one anyway then it's a lot cheaper than getting something else.

It's not though, is the thing. It'll still be around the cost of a vox amplug, possibly more. Ok it might be more versatile in that it has models claiming to sound like a variety of amps and effects but the quality won't be any good, otherwise it would cost a lot more. Plus the iphone hardware wouldn't be up to producing anything half decent anyway.
If I'm wrong and it's a £35 Axe-fx without the box then great, we can all buy one and someone will make some software enabling you to use the thing on a PC and we'll all live happily ever after.
If I'm right, and it sounds like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hbGCeqgsDgQ&feature=related) then frankly I'll take the amplug. One usable tone on the move is better than zero and you can make a phone call while you're at it.
Actually I won't take the amplug either, I don't play on the move and if I did I'd just play acoustic.
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MFp8MCfRC8E&feature=related
Watch for the touchscreen wah in this one! As if finger prints all over your screen weren't bad enough, you'll now have foot prints!
-
:?
I don't see what needs any great length of argument here. The aptitude of the iphone hardware maybe, but that's a bit beside the point anyway. It sounds god awful compared to a similarly priced, easier to use alternative in a niche where ease of use is paramount. Nothing in that statement that requires (or at least would admit of) any great depth of justification.

"To have it on my mobile device is really just unbelievable" That's the point i was trying so hard to make!
Looks good gwEm. I had that software on my old Pentium 2 in the late 90's. It was good fun to play with.
I have a great little app called thumb jam on my phone. It's a loop based sequencer and you can record with the built in sounds. It has loads of scale patterns and instruments. Its good value for a few £. Some naysayers would think its a rip off though. So bollocks to them I say and do your own thing!
-
I've just watched the YouTube clip for this app as this wasn't on that page when I first posted it. The tones are a lot better than I expected and they're a lot better than the amp sims in my two tascam guitar trainers. So if you play guitar and you have an iPhone then I think it would be a nice app to have. You may even get more features if you bide your time.

The latency is similar to that of our offerings on Mac/PC. If someone calls (this seems to come up with every iPhone music app but is easily answered) you should probably have put the device into airplane mode before playing it with the expectation of not being interrupted. :)
-
...but the quality won't be any good, otherwise it would cost a lot more. Plus the iphone hardware wouldn't be up to producing anything half decent anyway...
A lot of people think that and then try our well-priced AmpliTube 3 for a change of heart. We're musicians not just some audio conglomerate so pricing things to be affordable is something we care about. A lot. And the iPhone hardware is indeed up to the task. We've developed the DSP from scratch to get the best sound and performance on the platform and we've been known to be successful at that in the past and present too (see the AmpliTube 3 comment just before this one).

I think that sounds pretty awesome! I'm seriously considering getting that!
I'm often in need of a headphone amp. Although I already own a Vox Amplug, something a bit more versatile would be very welcome.
-
the 70's rock one had me sold, especially when the wah came in (ok, impractical to use when playing at the same time;) )...not something i would buy an iphone for, but if i already had an iphone this is a no brainer
-
The clips sound great :D
I think the key to making a judgement on something like this is actually trying it before you do so. No, not everybody will need or want this but for others it will be really handy. I like my Micro BR but the onboard sounds are terrible, on the face of it this sounds much better.
Peter, will it work with any 3rd party 4 track apps, like this http://www.sonomawireworks.com/iphone/fourtrack/
-
I've just sent these links to my brother-he has an Iphone and will love this.

I can see a need for a big toe here! I'd get this just for some big toe action on my phone!
I'm going to have to get this. I do love my tascam CD and the mp3 guitar trainers with the built in mics for learning songs but I always put pedals in front of it as I don't think much of their on board sounds. They do a grand job in other areas though.

Thanks! The free version will include audio clips to listen to through the amps/cabs/FX/etc before purchasing the iRig which will hit shelves later than the app most likely. So people can try it out in that way soon.
It is hard to get audio back and forth between apps without import/export so at this point no direct way. However, we're working on things that just may interest those of you interested in that sort of functionality :)
-
I think this is going to be awesome. Amplitube in your pocket for the win! Ready for them to release this.
-
our lass has an iphone - I may well have to get this app and, ahem, 'borrow' her phone

how can i put the music in my iphone and i dont want it delete my app? :D :D

Me, tease? Never! OK, maybe a little. 7 days. We're waiting... http://www.amplitube.com/irig

Peter, does this app use the same algorithms as the full scale Amplitube? If so, are the models missed out of the iphone version likely to be included in the future?
-
What's an iphone?
Only just read this thread - I've been ignoring it cos I don't own anything that starts with "i".
But this does sound quite interesting. If I had an iphone I'd be up for it.
But!!! I have no desire to get an iphone... nor indeed any sort of mobile device that does more than send SMS to me missus  - I'm dreading when my old NOKIA finally keels over (I've fixed it myself several times)... apparently it's very difficult to buy a phone without integrated camera, internet, hairdryer, toaster, and wotnot these days.
No, I kinda disagree with some folks, I can actually see plenty use for this app - just not for an ole luddite like me :D
What I really want, personally, is for Vox to come round my place, note down the settings I've dialled in for my favourite patch on their Tonelab LE... then program that into an amplug for me
-
i looked at pre ordering the irig. at 30 euros for the interface, it seems reasonable value, but 15 euro for shipping? and it seems vat is to be added after that? suddenly doesn't seem such good value.
just noticed, vat will be added at 20%!
-
blue - you might want to check the list of dealers/distributors nearer to you and I'll also ask to see if there are other options... http://www.ikmultimedia.com/dealers
We're two days away from when you can give it a try! http://www.amplitube.com/irig
-
much better prices! thank you Peter :)

I did. It is not, as the platform would not support that. The DSP is made by the same team with the same attention to detail and sound quality and has been coded from scratch to attain the highest performance and sound on the platform. We are considering a la carte gear that has been popular on the desktop version, for sure.
-
Peter, what is your view on other guitar solutions for the iPhone, namely Agile Partners AmpKit? Is there concern in the IK group about competitors, or do you guys think that you've got enough reputation not to worry?
Thanks!

Well, I would download that one and try it, however... ;)
Seriously, though, I'd have to wait and see. It isn't like we don't have good competition in the other markets we are in (amp sims, mixing/mastering plugins, reverb, virtual instruments, room analysis/correction, controllers/interfaces, etc). Competition begets quality. If we were the only ones we could rest on laurels that weren't 100% deserved.

To those that downloaded it, and perhaps those thinking about it, I've been told that this "Quick Start" video was really helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SMgKCO-pvcY

3 days to go until the iRig ships! July 1st in Europe, July 7th in the US…
Get the FREE version of AmpliTube For iPhone here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/amplitube-free/id373309342?mt=8

I got the full version and its great! At the moment I am playing through the PRS Guitar Bud (until the IRig ships). One odd thing is - If you do volume swells (i.e. volume control up and down a number of times) it seems turn the Ipod on and cause the Amplitube to crash.
- I hope this is because the Guitar Bud is not fully compatible - as it is quite annoying to get an MP3 in the middle of playing :D

Correct, we do not recommend the PRS cable. Ours is different and provides the proper signal for the device and app. I know it is hard to wait for the real interface for this but it will be worth it!
-
Two days now, almost here. I hope your local dealers have one to try too. It really is a great tool. Some dealers are even asking about the second shipment, seems like preorders at dealers are also quite hot at the moment.
-
One more day for Europe... anybody have one on the way?
-
iRig shipping started! Check out the pics added: http://bit.ly/cDLmSi

great idea for tone on the go, that's for sure. and nicely priced too!
-
Downloaded the free app. Loved it. Then bought the full Amplitube app. It rocks! Ready for the iRig now!

Thanks guys. Here's an interesting one - Gizmodo Japan seems to enjoy AmpliTube iRig (even gets to using a foot to control it!) http://www.ustream.tv/recorded/8025967

Probably doesn't even record.... if so, it's completely worthless, unless you have some candy-ass in your band who doesn't like carrying gear and thinks he can plug straight into the PA.
-
Probably doesn't even record.... if so, it's completely worthless, unless you have some candy-ass in your band who doesn't like carrying gear and thinks he can plug straight into the PA.
Yeah cos most guitar players with this app are going to gig with it to save carrying their rig on the bus eh!
Tom Scholz invented the Rockman headphone amp in the 80's and guitar players loved it. That didn't record either and it didn't make it useless
-
We're far past the 80's with technology.... and this is a toy. Something this technologically advanced seems like it should be able to record some kind of low bitrate mp3, otherwise, TO ME it seems worthless. There's plenty of a market for toys (as we can see with the ever-expanding app store universe) and yes, i'd love to see someone try and gig with it so i could call their phone and ruin the performance.
-
There are devices that record and let you overdub, but their built in sounds are very poor. This however has very good tones for something that is after all a mobile phone. Practise amps don't let you record either and they don't fit in your pocket. If you already have an iPhone then it's not much cost at all for something very useful. I think it's a break through not a gimmick as it will only improve in time and every new thing had to start somewhere. You can turn the phone off using airplane mode to stop the gig being ruined. 8)
-
You are on crack, right??? I mean gigging with this thing is obvious not going to happen (in fact most people don't gig with their rig, so that's a non starter) - This is a nice app that has the quality to allow you could lay down some tones into a recorder if you wanted - I have it, its cool and I use with an old Squier to have a cheeky practice in my office, and very nice it is too.
-
Probably doesn't even record.... if so, it's completely worthless, unless you have some candy-ass in your band who doesn't like carrying gear and thinks he can plug straight into the PA.
Recording and much more is coming to AmpliTube For iPhone and many think it isn't worthless at all. Should be in the hands of thousands that have wanted it shortly.
-
Hear hear! *the much waving of ballot papers*
-
But a real amp you can gig with, making it not a toy, but a physical tool, having the means of delivering your sound to a room full of people.
TO ME, subjectively, i would only like this thing if it could record... being the type of player who's concern is WRITING and not just playing, would find a portable (and good sounding) "riff archiver" an indispensable tool.
I'm just expressing my view as an active consumer; what i would like to see fulfilled, pay a fair price for and use for my own utility.

Enjoyed this video.
-
I think it seems pretty useful. If you view it as a practice/headphone amp, which I for one, am in dire need of.
I think it's blindingly obvious that no-one in their right mind is going to use it as a gigging amp, it's just not what it's designed for.
But then again Gepetto, not all of us are gigging musicians. :P

I've had gigging musicians interested in playing it live (like this outdoor concert - right after you see him unpack the iRig: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_LgY77vA8g and some others), some gigging musicians that just want a nice backstage/break time warmup tool, to others that just want to replace their bean-shaped thingies or blue vampire boxes... and recording is coming. Me? For small gigs I'd love to have more acoustic effects or even a breakout cable with XLR for vocals and attach it to the stand, since I already use PolyTune but that's definitely not this iteration. That said, different strokes for different folks. I can't wait to see so many more of these out there.
-
iRig is arriving to folks all over now! Here's a first user demo video, right after it arrived: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VnOUQNm2zQA

Nice! Hope you get it soon! For some nice tones, check out Jon Herington (Steely Dan's guitarist for a while now) playing some of their classics. Even I was surprised at the tones he got for those songs! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f4D2IVZlwz0

I have my I Rig and it doesn't have the trouble of the old PRS cable. Its a great tool, as I say I use it as a cheeky pracice amp at work - unfortunately I now have various co-workers coming into my office to have a go with it!!!
-
i got mine a couple of days ago. i've only had time, as yet, for a quick run through of it, but first impressions were pretty good. i was able to use it for tuning with my polytune app, then in amplitude i tried all the amps. the clean (fender) and lead (jcm 800) models were my immediate favourites, and add the overdrive pedal to the lead setting and there is much fun to be had :)
i just had it through a set of cheap headphones, but i look forward to trying something better, and spending a little more time with it
-
Thanks for the impressions! I look forward to hearing more once you've had more of a chance to use it (and slack at work as may be the case for one of you ;) )
-
The iPad native version of AmpliTube is in the App Store now too for those with iPad. Here's a cool "picture-in-picture" video that creates a looped-style piece, done with AmpliTube iRig (on iPhone): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=laPaZiqmPrM
Also, check out Dave Matthews Band bassist Stefan Lessard showing off iRig (getting some convincing DMB tones out of iRig) and also showing off his live rig using Mac Minis and AmpliTube/Ampeg SVX! http://bit.ly/ny1pre
