Title: Finished uni!
Post by: Lew on May 13, 2010, 01:42:09 PM
Back in the real world now *shudders* :o I'm just waiting on my results.

I'm updating my CV and preparing for job hunting!  I'm compiling a list of everywhere I'd like to apply to within 100 miles (whether they are recruiting or not) and I'm going to snail mail my CV and a covering letter to all of them. Quite frankly I'd be willing to work as voluntary staff (not my first choice, though :P) and get a part time shelf packer or whatever job to pay the bills.

Any job hunting tips are welcomed! :D

Leave no one standing, as such but you're already doing that. With a little luck, there'll always be someone.

Good luck! :D

Cheers all!

Well done.  What have you qualified in?

Nothing yet. I should probably have made this thread after I got my results   there's no emoticon for shiteing yourself in anticipation :o The course is a BA(hons) in music with the main focus being on production.

Blimey, it's 26 years since I graduated, I can barely remember it.  Best of luck!  :D

I'm hardly in a position to give advice, but is "Letter+CV" still regarded as the best way to find work?  I'd have thought the process would've moved with the times a bit.

Yea, basically + a 'showreel'/examples of my work.

Sounds good, I'm about to finish as well. Just handed in my final year project yesterday and one more exam in around a week and a half. No job prospects yet though, the media industry is really hard to get into. Almost sort of going off the idea as everyone I've emailed about jobs etc seems quite rude/unwilling to help out even though they must know how hard it is to get in.

Yea, I'm guessing it's going to be a struggle. I'm building up an 'attack plan' for employers at the mo. I think they key is to be as flexible as poss. What course is it Tom? - something to do with media obviously.

It is tough but I wouldn't be too disheartened.  Often people don't mean to be rude but the hours are really long in a lot of media jobs so replies can be a bit brusque if they're rushed out at midnight between renders.  What sort of jobs are you guys trying to get first up?

Well, best case scenario would be working in a studio as a trainee engineer or teaboy, but as already said the competition is mad, so I'm staying open minded and flexible. Quite frankly anyway I could be involved in music would be a start. As I said It'll likely involve voluntary work to get some experience. I spent the last 10years working in a different career too, which doesn't help :p

haha yeah, it's Media Production. Probably quite useless in the grand scheme of things, but it's a BSc rather than BA so may look a bit better as we do the techy stuff as well as creative?

Andrew I don't really know what I want to get into, tbh I'll give anything a go if it means a foot in the door! I've applied for the runner positions at Dneg so many times but never seem to get even an interview or anything, quite disheartening :(

My brothers on a BSc in Swansea and he says it's really technical. Mine's technical in as much as you have to use studio gear/software etc... but no where near as technical as the stuff I've seen my bro do.  I find that I had a heap more academia to do than him aswell, tons of essays. Whereas his hand ins have mostly been presentation based.

Did you have a reel when you applied?  These days a reel is pretty much a pre-requisite for anyone who isn't going into R&D, even for a running post.  You really shouldn't get discouraged; I have a box file which is full of my rejection letters from when I started out and those are the ones who actually bothered to reply.  It's not an easy industry to get into but it is one that rewards persistence.  Also if you're not exactly sure what you want to get into I would counsel against visual effects as it will eat your life for large sections of the year and if you don't really really want to do it I think that would be hard to cope with.

Lew!! I know nothing about audio production so can't really offer advice.  That said, a guy who I did my degree with had been an audio engineer for ten years, fancied a change, did a similar course to me and also ended up doing visual effects so shifting careers can be done and you've got the qualifications now.  Best of luck to both of you.

I don't think I had a reel when I first applied last year. I've got one now but unfortunately I'm not very proud of it as we don't do much vfx stuff at uni and our cameras are a bit cr@p as well. Animation and compositing very much interest me, just not sure if I've got the skills to even get a chance at the runner position yet.

Do you have any suggestions for websites/places to look where jobs in the industry are advertised? I know of Mandy but can't see many others.

Sorry for the hijack Lew  PDT_034

Tom, what I did was go through magazines like Cinefex, Broadcast and Creative Review, make a list of all the companies that advertise or are featured and called them up.  These days (it was a long time ago that I did this) you could just do a Google search for "London Post Production Facilities" or "London Visual Effects".  Most companies aren't going to advertise running jobs because there will always be a stream of people calling up and asking for them.  The trick is to be the person who calls up on the morning when the company realises that they need a runner and that's why it's best to find a lot of companies and call them reasonably regularly.  With big companies like DNeg, MPC, Cinesite and Framestore it's best to keep applying online but you will need a reel of a fair standard to be considered.  Hope that helps a bit.

Thats the attack plan I'm going with, spent the last few days making sure I'm really happy with my CV, don't suppose there's much point in sending a 'hard copy' of the CV as everyone uses email, I'll follow the email up with a phone call.

I wouldnt be so sure on that.

When i was in HR at CSS posted CVs/Applications always got first viewing and if the right candidate was in there the others didnt even get looked at.

Never understimate the power of formal mail....unless theres a strike on

and congratulations on your results

Cheers guys, I've just calculated my average for coursework this year is 76% (roughly the same as last year overall which is 1/3 of the weighting) so it's looking promising, just got 3 exams and my final year project to be marked. Can't wait to get the results.

Still had no luck with jobs, the only one I've found so far is totally unrelated - mtb tour guide in Tenerife, haha. I'm actually tempted to try it for a few months, would be an experience!

Yeah, big congratulations tom :D - firsts are tougher to get than the people with 2:1s etc might tell you

I only got a "pass" back in "ye olden days" myself... (mind you, we played guitar, read LOTR, etc, a lot more than actually doing any studying back then...)

They were saying on the news this morning that there are 70 applicants for every graduate vacancy!  But having a first (or 2.1) will help a lot.

It's 69 apparently - maybe they said 70 on BBC Breakfast so Sian Williams wouldn't get the giggles.

Going to start re-applying like mad with my new CV. Is it tw@tty to put "(BSc. Hons.)" after your name? It seems it to me..
Title: Re: Finished uni!
Post by: AndyR on July 06, 2010, 06:23:04 PM
Back in the 80s, the convention was "BSc", only add the "Hons" in education.

So a teacher or lecturer putting Fred Bloggs BSc Hons was cool.
Someone in another profession, even with an honours degree, should only put Fred Bloggs BSc.

But, whether that still applies (or whether the Uni lecturer advising us was talking bullsh1t!!) I have no idea.

And after the first couple of months, the sense of achievement and seeing your name with initials kind of wears off anyway!

My CV says BSc after my name because that's all I've got. I would, however, probably stick Hons after it if I had it, even though I'm not in education.

So, not tw@tty on a CV.

I wouldn't put any initials on my name on covering letters though - you probably could, still maintaining a low coefficient of tw@ttiness, I just wouldn't bother myself.
Title: Re: Finished uni!
Post by: Philly Q on July 06, 2010, 06:28:07 PM
I never heard of that convention about the "Hons", Andy.

I don't think I've ever put "BSc Hons" after my name, but I don't think there's any harm in doing so in the context of a job application.

... but I don't think there's any harm in doing so in the context of a job application.

In fact, I'd suggest it's the opposite - blow every flippin trumpet you've got Tom!!

Tastefully, of course. Don't be tempted into "Tom CoolDude BSc Hons (1st Class you losers)"

I'm starting a new job next week, it's not one I love but the mortgage doesn't seem to care about that! It's nights so atleast it suits me and means I can carry on looking for a 'real' job in the day/days off. That's the plan anyway!

Not mine to give I'm afraid.  I think they're getting quite strict on showreels for those wanting to work in the more creative bits.  I think it also really helps if you have a good idea of what you want to do career wise as HR are pretty careful on hiring people with a long-term strategy in mind.  Have you got a reel?  I'm happy to take a look and offer a crit if you'd like?  Also have you tried the other usual suspects VFX wise: Framestore, MPC, Cinesite etc?
