Title: doing a schenker harlequin finish
Post by: gwEm on May 15, 2010, 06:47:34 PM

how would one go about this? start with a black V and spray the white parts, or the other way around? i have done some research and it seems michael has had both done in the past. on the part you spray, would it be a good idea to strip the finish, rough it up, or just leave it?

anyone know someone who would do this type of work?

It's probably best done from scratch, but on an existing guitar I'd guess black over white would give much better coverage, with just a few coats, than white over black.  Then lots of clear coats over the top to get rid of the "step" between white and black.

The thing which always interested me was the scratchplate - presumably it's two plates, cut down the middle, then glued along the edges.  Could be tricky to get that right.

Gwem - you could get me to do it......
I'm currently doing one already - although the customer has chosen a different colour scheme (claret and blue) as he's an Aston Villa fan as well as a Schenker fan

The pickguard is actually just spray painted rather than two different coloured plastics - I have seen this guitar later on when the paint was worn off the plate a bit

Are you going to see Schenker in June?

Epiphone did one. Search the music stores and ebay.

There's an Edwards one too, which looks identical (apart from the finish!) to the white V I had.  I've seen some Grecos in the Schenker finish too.

But I'm guessing gwEm is thinking of refinishing an existing guitar?

We'll just have to talk some sense out of him then

I was eyeing up a "matt" black Gibson V yesterday. Didn't try it or see a price, but I was almost tempted to "have a go". (This was approx 1/2 an hour before GAS struck on the new Roadworn).

Would a "half-finished" guitar like the Fadeds be a good candidate (and possibly cheaper) for a refinish like this?

Yeah, I think it would.  A thin nitro finish, easy to strip or just to use as a base for the new finish.

yes, i've seen the edwards one, it looks cool. and there is indeed 80s aria and greco ones out there.

the thing with all the above is that the white is the more creamy gibson white, would prefer brilliant white for the white part.

the tokai and epiphone ones are alder/maple unfortnately

jonathan is right about the scratchplate:

like the idea of refining a faded series one actually.. will ponder a little

Well - I'm going and I'd love to have a beer with you!

Strangely for me I chose a balcony ticket rather than a standing ticket as the balcony at the Empire almost reaches the stage and the view is fabulous and I want to lose myself in his playing which was on fire when I saw him last year.

Loving having him back with Gary - the proper voice of MSG

I recommend stripping and refinishing.

When refinishing, remember: not all masking tapes are created equal. Get good quality tape if you want to avoid runs.

Here is the work in progress shot of the Aston Villa Schenker V we are making
Still awaiting flatting back and top coats being applied
Also shown pics of the V inlays we did for it as well

What colour pickups will the Villa V have?  It would be cool if they could match the colour scheme somehow.

Black Cold Sweat set (in Duncan tripleshot rings)
We thought about coloured bobbins but felt colours would clash as they are not same shades and having Crystal Palace pickups in a Villa V would never do

Villa V looks very cool - not my cup of tea, but nice!

looking at all the options for the Schenker version. seems that to get brilliant white its got to be a custom refin. lots of factors in play - including cost and how much i care about total authenticity

Just stumbled on this on eBay.  It's only a cheapie, but might be fun to upgrade:

thanks philly.. saw that too. its alder/maple though, and i've never seen a MIC tokai I was convinced by yet. its tempting considering the very reasonable price, and the colours are right, but i'll probably steer clear.
