Title: Vox AC10
Post by: dragonfire709 on May 18, 2010, 11:10:39 PM
I'm not a huge expert on vintage gear, but a friend of mine has a Vox AC10 that he is looking to sell. Its a 1965 model and is in pretty good condition and working great.

I've asked him for some photos, but in the meantime has anyone got any idea of a ballpark value of it?

Cheers

Roy

is it all original? - are the speakers in good shape? any issues?

I'd say he's looking in the £1k range for sure if its in reasonable condition.  Obviously if its in mint condition, he'll get more with the right buyer and if its been thrashed within an inch of its life, he'll likely get much less.

Hmmm.... a quick look on ebay shows that this grey panel AC10 has been up for sale twice with no takers.  One at £999 bin, then at £799 with no reserve... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOX-AC10-guitar-amplifier-vintage-1964-/300426069370?cmd=ViewItem&pt=UK_MusicalInstr_Amplifiers_RL&hash=item45f2ca057a#ht_500wt_1182

Maybe hang on to it till the market picks up ????

Any pictures?

I Havent seen it in the flesh yet, but knowing the owner it will be in good shape. It originally belonged to his dad, and has seen only light use. Heres some pictures;

I'm not convinced that grillcloth is original - doesn't look like the brown coloured stuff on the Vox amps I've owned myself.  However, it IS a grey panel amp so thats '67 onwards and it 'may' be original.  I will say that the grillcloth on Vox amps tends to sag and that cloth looks TOO perfect.  Has it been recovered too?

eBay is pretty dead at the moment if my recent guitar-selling attempts are anything to go by.  :?

+1 on this.  Sold a camera and a few other guitar related bits and pieces in the last month and there's a lot of watchers out there but they dont turn into many buyers unfortunately.

Lovely amp though, hope it ends up going to a good home.

That AC10 has had a replaced mains transformer, which will knock quite a lot off the value. I've not seen an AC10 with Celestion 10" speakers either, although obviously that doesn't mean they some came with those from the factory. Of course you still have to convince the buyer that these speakers are stock....

Anything vintage with "issues" is getting very hard to shift at the moment.

Anyhow, the amp in question looks in very good nick, and I would estimate (if it's all correct) would move at around the £1000 mark, and maybe £1200 with the wind behind it.

I have a similarly aged AC10 and that grill cloth is not as brown or saggy as mine ( ).
Thats in great shape though, and its a cracking tone

I have spoken a bit more to Gren about the amp. He knows that it definitely hasn't been recovered, and doesn't think the speaker cloth has been replaced. It has been kept under a pretty sturdy cover for most of its life, hence its great condition.

I'll bet it sounds great!
