Title: iMac Airport problem. Attn Ian & Johny
Post by: Johnny Mac on May 19, 2010, 10:15:38 AM
I have discovered I have a common fault with my Airport (wi-fi) In the apple forum other customers are experiencing the same thing. There should be an icon at the top right for the airport but mine isn't there. I couldn't get it via utilitys either. The forum posters are saying it's a wire disconnected to the card and had to send their iMacs back for replacement as there are no user servicable parts inside. So check yours before you spend 3 weeks setting it all up like me! All my software has been authenticicated to my machine now. Bummer.

What problems exist with this Airport issue? No internet connection at all?

I have JUST setup my iMac and everything seems fine so far. And I've connected to the Internet and everything.

Thats good that yours is ok. It's the actual wi-fi or airport card in the machine that some on the apple forum think is at fault. Mine is ok with Ethernet cable but won't find it's own signal let alone one from a modem. Some posters were saying that an internal connecting wire is the culprit. I may have to send it back.
Anyway how do like your new mac?  :D

Is the airport card showing under the network section of the System Profiler?

To get to sys info either click on the Apple logo and then 'About this Mac' or alternatively go to Applications -> Utilities and click on the System Profiler app. It should report the card type in there if the OS has picked it up.

Its listing some info about an airport under system profiler, so I assume its locating one.

Here's what I found on the apple forums

I don't think you've any alternative but to take it to either an Apple store or an approved service centre.

Fook! I thought that would be the case. Oh well I'll see if I can prize the case open with a club hammer and bolster.  :x
