Title: Is this a Custom shop BC Rich Mockingbird?
Post by: DimeZakk on May 19, 2010, 07:37:59 PM
I don't know, isn't the R on the headstock a sign for it? The seller also doesn't know...

Their custom shop does use the 'R' logo, unless it's a fake (not that I'd spot it if it was) it'll be custom shop.

I bet it's not for the simple reason that otherwise the seller would mention it everywhere and that it's made in the US.
Not 100% sure, but the NJ series I think had some with an R as well.

The Czech-made Calibre Classic series also had the "R" logo, but it's not one of those because (as far as I know) they all had maple tops.

The electronics look cheap, I'd assume BC Rich use better quality parts on US models.

Beyond that, I have no idea I'm afraid.

^That's interesting. I always thought the Calibre series were customs, like Moser's Templar series. Guess I'm wrong...

I'm pretty sure there were just three Calibre models - the Calibre Classic Bich and Mockingbird (in red or natural) and the Calibre Warlock (in black only).  Schaller hardware, Rockfield pickups, quality timber (but still nato rather than mahogany, for some reason).

They looked really good, I would've loved to try the Bich or Mockingbird, but they didn't last long.  I guess the Czech operation didn't turn out to be cost-effective.

Not sure of the heritage of the guitar - although seller says made in 2000, whilst still in hands of Rico family
Elecs are standard EMG parts so no judgement can be made there

Don't think the R on the headstock has always indicated USA made though
Company has been through so many changes of ownership that different policies came in at various times
Also if was USA high end then the seller wouldn't start the bidding low with NO RESERVE surely
Older USA Riches didn't have recessed backplates
The SPC control on there is an OLD one (well over 10 years old) - but could have been added later

It looks like a nice guitar however - worth a few hundred at least no matter where it is made

Done a bit of research, the calibre series seem to be only available with quilt tops (and they're neck-through) - that's the 2006 onwards model and I can't find anything about there being a calibre series before that.

So I don't know, in other words.

I looked at the picture of the electronics and totally forgot the pickups were EMGs.  D'oh!

Might be a one off. The regular ones have Imperial tuners, tringers on the body, Duncan or DiMarzio pickups and a wraparound bridge.

If it's a fake someone did alot of effort.

I'd ask for the serial number and check at a BC Rich forum.

They used to have 2 types, called something like deluxe and supreme, one was more 70s accurate and had the wraparound, one was more modern with a TOM.
As Johnathan says though, if it's fake it's very nice, and could easily be worth £500+ and it's currently at 76 euros.

The question at the bottom, the guy is saying that it's a Bernie Rico Jr Custom Shop BC Rich.

I know zero about the guitars though, so that's just taking it at face value.

A friend of mine bought this guitar!
If anyone is interested I can give my impression on how good it actually is when I played it...
