You should hav posted a Warning to the only one Mr PhillyQ...
He's a d!ck, but the guitar is awesome!
-
why do so many guys seem to hate him (I know your feelings Philly, don't worry!), but the dude loves playing guitar & his enthusiasum (?) just rubs off on me.
-
I'm going to buck the trend, I like the enthusiasm in his vids. I cant watch too many mind you as it does become too much after a while but he can entertain a crowd and he can certainly play. He is also reassuringly sloppy -I like that sometimes as I am too!
-
Nope, I'm in the Phil X fan club. But it's OK, cause I'm also in the Philly Q fan club!!!
:D
I'm not a Les Paul fan - but if I were ever to get one, P90s would be the way to go - that sounds lovely.

Mark, you're a gent! :D
Haven't even tried to watch the clip because I have woken up with a blinding headache (no alcohol involved). No way I could cope with Mr X this morning....
-
Super cool axe.
-
I quite like Mr X as well, I'm jealous of his job and he obviously loves what he's doing. His enthusiasm is contagious and just watching that's made me want to go and play some guitar. So see you later folks!
-
OK, I had a quick look - confirms my belief that a P-90 goldtop has to have a wraparound bridge.
Awesome guitar! The Funk #49 lesson was quite cool too.
("I gotta calm down man". Quite. :| )
-
Amazing guitar with a classic tone, I think X's video are great fun :D
-
I think the question about Phil X is this: Is there anyone else out there doing such entertaining demos? Like them or not, we all know who he is, who he works for and the kind of stock they carry. As advertising he does an amazing job and I find him really entertaining and inspiring. Remember that you don't have to like an advert for it to anchor in your mind and influence your behaviour. In fact, some of the most effective ads have been appalling:

BTW, does anyone make an affordable replica of the '53 goldtop?
-
no
-
They probably could on Blue Peter.

Not quite a '53 but Edwards do a gold top with p90s if you don't mind a TOM instead of the wraparound (Philly Q need not apply ;) ).

I kinda like his reviews, plus he can play. Listen to that guy called "tone king"! Talks boring rubbish and can't play (and thus doesn't play the instruments a lot in his reviews).
Plus, that Phil X can retune a guitar in a matter of seconds!!! That alone is amazing!
-
I've seen P90 goldtops from Tokai, Edwards/ESP and Vintage. All have the TOM.

Just saw this on eBay yesterday. It didn't last long.

I saw a guy wearing a Phil X t shirt today.
Maniac.
-
I like Phil X, as has been said his enthusiasm does rub off on you. Always has great tone as well. I like that tuning, going to have to use that!
-
I've used that tuning already. Tuning your guitar to Drop B and using it is even cooler!
Paddy!

Remember those were around 500 bucks not too long ago?
(I really need to get rid of those old guitar mags and catalogues.)
-
I think mine (which was, admittedly, just a regular one with humbuckers and a T-O-M) sold for about £520 a couple of years ago.
Looked nice though, didn't it, that '54 reissue? If it had been in the UK, without all the shipping and VAT costs, I'd have been quite tempted.
-
i quite like Phil X. he is VERY enthusiastic! but he clearly loves what he's doing, and he is good at it.
Epiphone also do a P90 Goldtop Les Paul, again it has a TOM though.
-
Love Phil X!!!
First time I showed one of the Fretted Americana spots to my wife, she said "That guy's gotta be your brother. I'd go slap your Mom..."
-
Back to those P-90 goldtops... like buses, you wait ages for one, then four turn up together! Richtone have 3 of these:

(Bloody expensive though!)

Praising Phil X for his enthusiasm seems a bit like praising Hitler for his ambition.
Not sure I've ever seen a player as good as he is who's anywhere near as annoying.

I find this is very amazing that most of you guys find Phil X annoying.
To me, he seems pretty much a normal guitar guy, if there is such a thing.
In fact I kind of identify with him and have a similar persona especially on stage.
I really enjoy his demos because I can relate to him and what he's saying about the piece.
I think it was either stupid luck or sheer genius on the part of Fretted Americana to do produce these
weekly videos, because if Phil X comes across favorably to me, then there has to be thousands more men
just like me who are 40-something successful businessmen and weekend rockers who actually have the money
to afford these collectible guitars.
I have never met Phil X and don't know what he's like personally, but he has a built-in credibility because I can relate
to him, that's the marketing genius part.
Also, I wonder if you all find him so annoying, maybe that's why you find me annoying and I don't get along very well at times.
Perhaps there's a one-way culture clash that is painful or irritating to your English culture, but as a West Coast American I am blind to it?
-
I think it's mostly me who finds him annoying. The majority of people on here seem to really like the guy.
-
I don't think if you really like someone you would compare them to Hitler. :D
edit..............
Reading back through the thread it's about half and half.
No personal stake in this at all, I don't know the guy.
Just amused and pondering why he seems to rub some people the wrong way.
-

I think he's "over in everything... We're in times that you shall demonstrate to people that you're 197% and nothing will break it... Your mom died? Go to a party, drink and you'll be happy :?
He's just one more of a lot of people like this...
-
I bet he is good to his Mum.
-
I'm sure he's a nice guy, there's nothing wrong with being an extrovert. But a quiet person is essentially "invisible", a loud person is invading your personal space (for want of a better term) just by being there. IMO.
Imagine sitting on a bus with him there talking on his mobile:
"Hellllooooo Baaaay-by! PHIL X!! Well allriiiight! (stamps feet) How's it hangin'? (drums on the back of the seat in front) WOOOOT!!" (etc)
Meanwhile I'm sitting there trying to read a book.... :?
(Disclaimer: This assumes Phil X is exactly the same in everyday life as he is on his videos. He may well not be.)
-
I like him very much (not in a sexual way of course). I imagine that he is similar in his personal life - maybe just not as loud. If you watch the videos of him when he is playing seriously there is quite a bit of a difference.
-
I often wonder if I'd go just as gaga when presented with a wealth of vintage guitars to choose from.

... and someone poked a camera in your face and said "OK, demo and talk about this guitar..."
Actually, Philly, if someone did that to you - what do think might end up on film if they did that to you?
I've only been videoed once (as a front man) in a "talking" situation, and I just clammed up and gave mono-syllabic answers. Watching it afterwards, I realised that, for future reference, the only way I could do it successfully would be to put the "over the top verbal-diahorea nutcase" personality on... luckily, no one ever pointed a camera at me again!!
-

"Please don't point that camera at me, I don't like being filmed or photographed."
"Look, please, could you turn it off?"
"I said... will you $% OFF!!!"
Fingers on lens.
(Some sort of scuffle, too blurry to make out.)
Shot of someone's feet and legs, filmed sideways at ground level.
Stop.

Rį! Really good point of view... Not sure if I'd be very shy or very explosive, depends on the day... Fernando X  cr@p, you've got us...
-
he's great, full of beans obviously, but exudes musical talent.not just a matter of playing exceptionally well, which he clearly does, but he's a performer, he wants to share his talent and does so very well.

egh thats stuff is alright.......... just go to guitar center in in downtown LA and they're just lying on the floor. Bah its sorta cool and sad. But I picked up a $3000 SG from like 63-64 and it was just, on the floor. :\
