Title: removing spray-paint from 4x12 tolex, help!
Post by: HTH AMPS on May 29, 2010, 12:43:10 PM
I've got a 4x12 here that was spray-painted on the back and I want to remove the lettering.

Anyone got ideas? - tried white spirit, no dice.

toothbrush and naptha would be my first port of call.   hard though because anything that works great for removing lacquer will melt the tolex, but you could try doing it really gently and carefully with some thinners

dettol is also worth a try - really depends on the paint used

black paint was my first thought too, but if I can get the stuff off, then that would be the best way forward.

will try Detol first as its easier to get than naptha (no idea what it is or where to get it).

Nail polish remover (that contains acetone, not any of these silly non-acetone versions) may also work, although acetone is a far better solvent than lighter fluid and will probably melt the tolex...

Definitely worth trying a bit out of sight whichever solvents you try, just to be sure!

they are all things which are usefull for other jobs anyway - so get a few bits and try

the naptha doesnt always work - its really better as a cleaner, but its handy stuff to have around.

Maybe a bit of T-Cut?  :?  If the chemical route doesn't work then it may be a case of an abrasive.

Let us know what works.

DMSO should work a treat, too. Although for paint, I think acetone is probably still better.

I just had a thought - this isn't like gwem and his "who the hell is Johnny Winter?" autographed V is it?

What does it say? It's not "J.H.EXP" or something like that is it?

result!!! - acetone works a treat using those cotton wool pads.

Its gonna take some time, but it'll be better than spray painting over it.  May use some back-to-black if required, cheers gwEm.

I'd be careful with back to black.  It leaves a coating (silicone probably) which can be a bit of a bitch.
